Overview

About the property

5 Bedrooms, 5 Baths, Sleeps 8

Welcome to “Mapes!” A woodpecker door knocker tends the front door. A carved wooden bear stands tall offering “bear hugs” for a nickel. This is going to be a fun and friendly place! In the midst of the remarkable collection of mountain homes comprising prestigious Windcliff Estates, the Mapes family has created a masterpiece. The residence is perfectly situated to enjoy a commanding view of the rocky fortresses comprising the Front Range and the Mummy Range of the Rocky Mountains in Rocky Mountain National Park. It is exhilaratingly modern and fresh. Enter from the welcoming and embracing foyer to a living area designed as a meeting place for you and the mountains. A peaked wall of western windows frames forests and mountains like gallery masterpieces. Rich lodge-style leather seating huddles near the remotely-controlled gas fireplace awaiting your pleasure. A wall of reclaimed wood and southwestern artifacts lend unique character to your surroundings.

The chef’s kitchen at “Mapes” is a dream come true. It features space --- and more space! What seems like an acre of dark granite is the perfect playing field for culinary experimentation. Stacked ovens, an induction range, a microwave drawer, and two dishwashers (you were planning a banquet, weren’t you?) are ready to elevate your mountain vacation meals to feasts. Try the “Asparagus Soup with Poached Eggs and Crispy Proscuito” in Kate McMillan’s cook book in the cupboard --- or dine on Yotam Ottolenghi’s “Lamb Rib Chops with Walnut, Fig, and Goat Cheese Salad.” For dessert select an offering from Susan Purdy’s “Pie in the Sky” cookbook. Her recipes are classics when it comes to mastering the art of baking at high altitude. The Mapes have provided every tool and utensil that you could possibly need. Your imagination is the only missing ingredient. Set the view-laden dining room table with “Moose Country” china by Tienshang, classic stem ware, and conversation of your own making. Two handsome decks off the living and dining areas offer alternative locales for dining or just refreshing. A beautiful laundry room you will want to take home with you is situated near the kitchen.

The Mapes residence incorporates five bedrooms and five bathrooms. The master suite is privately situated one flight up with pillow positions aimed directly at the Continental Divide. A gas fireplace separates the sleeping chamber from the luxurious air-jet soaking tub with its mountain view. An immense, glass-enclosed shower is close at hand. Tiles, wood, metal, and distinctive lighting harmonize in tune with the panoramic vistas forever at hand. An ensuite queen bedroom replete with a wall-mounted TV and mirrored furnishings and a king suite constitute the main-level sleeping accommodations. Downstairs is a home theater and game room flanked by two more ensuite bedrooms --- one a bunkhouse room with three twins that is guaranteed to be a kids’ delight! Just outside on a sprawling patio stands a hot tub ready to soothe the aches of a long hike or a horseback trek in the National Park. The tub is perfectly positioned to enjoy one of the greatest views on earth.

Those who have been here before you would like you to know how much they enjoyed the experience:

Although Estes Park [Rocky Mountain National Park’s gateway community] is only 15 minutes distant by car, you will always feel securely tucked away at “Mapes” --- separated from the “hustle and bustle” of people and their traffic. The Windcliff enclave embracing the “Mapes” residence is a private residential community comprising 260 acres on the sunny western slopes of Ram’s Horn Mountain. It is served by a single entrance to private roads with no through streets or heavy traffic. It is truly a world apart!

Wonderful extended weekend!!!

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful experience in a beautiful house! 4 senior couples visited RMNP for a weekend, and it was everything we could hope for! We got a little worried about snow as we arrived, but the road is a hard packed gravel, that was easy for our 2 wheel drive, 15 passenger van. Mapes is lower on the mountain than some, so perhaps higher up a 4 wheel drive would have been nice, but we had no trouble. Still the view is spectacular! First night we got about 7-8" snow. By 8-9 am, Windcliff snowplow had been by 3 times or more. The sun took over later in morning, and road was again easy to traverse.

The night view at Mapes looks down on the glow of the ymca complex in the valley across the road.

The kitchen is very nice. Plan to cook something there! We cooked every night, when we saw how nice it was. Safeway is the lone groc store, so they're a little higher than other places, but then, Estes pk is a remote mt town. The dining table has seating for 8, perfect for our group.

There's no reason to leave the house other than a drive thru the park, or groc.

The fireplace was really cozy - bring a book. Kinda wished for a tv in main room so we could get weather reports, & ball game while we played cards/ board games. Maybe in dining area. But theres tv in all bedrooms.

We had a herd of about 20 deer stop by one night to graze right up close to the house, and came right up to the door, and around van in drive. Got lots of nice photos.

Bedroom separation is great for privacy. Only 1 bedroom does not have its own bathroom, but it's in hall just a few ft away. If Windcliff could provide a small portable wicker screen, it could be placed at hall entrance to make that more private for that bedroom.

There's a really nice lower level for kids, with bunk beds, separate bath, and game room with tv. There's not room enough here to give this house the praise it deserves, but it's a great place to stay! Our 8 people all agreed NO REGRETS WHATEVER. Would like to stay in summer next time so we could use hot tub and grills.

The house is immaculate; its electric heat, and very quiet, and more than adaquate. Once there, you'll want to move in and stay! By the time we left, we were just finding where everything was, and feeling like it was home. The furnishings are high quality, beds/ pillows were very comfortable - foam mattresses.

It books up early, so you need to be at least 90 days out on reservations. Maybe more in summer.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your excellent, detailed review, Keith! We can't wait to have your group back on the mountain. We are glad you had success with the 2WD but want to be sure that others understand your experience was exceptional. AWD/4WD is strongly encouraged for ALL Windcliff rentals between the months of October and April. Also, some of our homes are not as accommodating of long wheelbase vehicles emphasizing the importance of speaking at length with a Windcliff staff member before reserving any home - just to be sure! Besides, we LOVE speaking one-on-one with our guests - especially return guests! C'mon back soon. - Rich & the Staff

Perfect Home!

  • 5 of 5

The home was beautiful and had EVERYTHING we needed for our stay. This was our first time in Colorado and the views were amazing from every angle. The master bedroom was a dream. The hot tub was a nice touch. We really, really enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again. Please if you visit in winter rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle.

Girls Getaway

  • 5 of 5

The Mapes was amazing! It was a perfect girls getaway. The house was extremely comfortable and came with everything we needed. The location is close to RMNP. We especially loved the hot tub to soak in after long days of hiking. The views from every window were breathtaking. The only negative thing I could say is that we were never able to get the stereo system working. I would highly recommend The Mapes! Thank you for a great stay!!
