About Corry McDowell

We (Ray, Corry, Therese and Erik), are owners of Whispering Pines Lodge. We purchased the cabin in December of 2014 because we love the rustic and the near by mountains. Ray and Corry moved to Loveland, Colorado from Michigan in 1972. Ray worked for Eastman Kodak company for 33+ years and has since retired. Corry was a graphic artist and a stay at home mom to raise their five children. Corry has won the Loveland Re-mailing Valentine contest; Cachet 14 time and Valentine card 4 times. Corry volunteers at the House of Neighborly Service because she believes in helping the those in need. Ray & Corry and daughter, Therese and husband Erik, together bought the cabin as an investment and a place to relax. Therese and Erik were married June 2014. Therese is a dental assistant with Comfort Dental and Erik has his own trucking business. Therese and Erik welcomed their first child, a little girl, November 12, 2015. To help pay the expenses we decided to rent out our cabin when not in use. Ray and Corry enjoy going to the mountains plus to the cabin to do the cleaning after guests have stayed. Our favorite activity when enjoying the cabin is walking around the lake, looking for wild life and enjoying the wild flowers.

Why Corry McDowell chose Grand Lake

The mountain scenery in Grand Lake is the most beautiful in all of Colorado. And it is so peaceful in the Sun Valley Lake area that a person can forget all their troubles. We love this cabin because of it's authentic log cabin design, beautiful vistas and off the beaten path of everyday life. Yet it offers so many activities that we do not do back in Loveland.

What makes this cabin unique

We fell in love with Rocky Mountain Lodge (we renamed it Whispering Pines Lodge) because of its rustic look, with the hand scraped logs, the log furniture and it's location in the Colorado mountains. It has all the modern conveniences of home but away from the hustle and bustle of home. We have made many up-grades since we first bought the lodge. Adding granite counter tops in the kitchen and bathrooms, rebuilding one of the staircases and walling it in to make the main level bedroom private. Also remodeled one bathroom installing a walk-in shower. We have up-graded the mattresses and have bought new sofa bed with matching loveseat and recliner. We have built a large rustic dining room table and upgraded the dining room chairs.

One of my favorite things is relaxing on the front porch glider with a glass of wine after a full day of activities, watching the hummingbirds and the sun going down...happiness!

Beautiful, clean and well maintained

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely place for a family vacation! The location is great - close to RMNP and Grand Lake, but away from the crowds. There is plenty to do at the cabin if you just want to enjoy the lake and scenery. Everything was clean and well kept. The beds are comfortable. Everything we needed was provided. It's a great place to stay, and the owners are friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed this getaway home!

A lovely spot

A lovely spot. Very quiet even with the kiddie playground, which was much used, just across the driveway. An exceptionally well appointed kitchen.

Mountain Vacation at Whispering Pines

  • 5 of 5

My stay at Sun Valley was from June 29 through July 19, 2017. The moment I walked in the cabin I knew it was going to be a wonderful vacation. It felt like home. So much was available for our use. Towels and bedding were A-one quality, cupboards stocked with any type of pot or pan, dishes, storage containers, even foil and saran wrap......I could go on.

With friends and family joining me at various times, everyone particularly enjoyed the new dock complete with paddle boat and canoe. It was a plus to see the moose swim the lake as well as the white pelicans, muskrat, and watching the osprey dive for dinner.

Location was perfect because we were near hiking trails, minutes away from RMNP, and a short distance to Grand Lake.

The peacefulness of the area was refreshing after the crowds in Grand Lake.

If I ever get another chance to return, I would choose Whispering Pines again.

Better than we expected, home has everything you need, washer/dryer, kitchen, pots/pans, utensils, etc. Very cozy and warm home, bedrooms and beds were great, family area was very comfortable. The area is gorgeous, adjacent to the western entrance to Rocky Mtn Nat'l Park, and just three miles from the town of Grand Lake. A 2 minute walk from the private lake which has plenty of fish and good fishing. Loved the bicycles and canoe, swings for the kids, and lots of deer and moose in the area. Also appreciated the hummingbird feeder!

Our stay was perfect and we hope to do it again soon, all four adults and five kids absolutely loved it.
