About the property

4 Bedroom Private Beach Home

Dewees Island is a private barrier island off the coast of Charleston that is dedicated to preservation. We are a quick ferry ride from all of Charleston's charms, yet the island is peaceful and serene. Dewees remains in a much more natural state than many ocean islands. At the same time, the island has a beautiful community pool. Great fishing, birding, and beaches. We travel by golf cart. And with no stores or restaurants, Dewees is a magical escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life!

This four bedroom treehouse is a delight for grownups and kids alike. It’s like a luxury safari! Rocking chairs adorn the welcoming front porch, with views of a huge Live Oak draped in moss, and room to serve a picnic dinner or swing in the hammock. The sounds of ocean waves, birds, cicadas and owls will lull you to sleep.

Designed by the owner/ architect to maximize every available inch of space, this home promises a low-key vacation in a comfortable setting. The house is nestled in the trees to create human habitat within the forest. The main living area is open to the kitchen and flanked by queen bedroom suites on either end. The main master suite has its own walk-in shower in the bathroom, as well as an outdoor shower on the private porch. The guest suite is behind the kitchen, with a door that closes for privacy. A spiral staircase leads to the airy second level, with catwalk hallways leading to two bedrooms open to the living area below. Curtains pull across for privacy. And to top it all off, each of those bedrooms has another loft accessible by offset ladders, providing extra sleeping space or cozy reading nooks.

fully stocked kitchen, ipod connection to house stereo system, roku, and wifi, new dishwasher, two new golf carts, and an Airport Express for wireless streaming of music from network-compatible devices like iPhones, iPads & laptops to the stereo system, 5 beach chairs, beach awning.

About Emily

Emily and Stewart are the proud owners of Dewees Rentals, aka Watson Property Management Group. They are committed to helping residents and guests navigate the tricky balance of living (and vacationing) gently on a barrier island. Emily helped build Dewees Rentals from scratch starting in 2009, and she and Stewart took over ownership in 2014. She manages reservations, interns, and rental homes from her office in Mount Pleasant. With a background in teaching, Emily never dreamed that she would someday own a vacation rental company! When asked why she does what she does she states, "I love connecting with owners and guests alike! There's nothing more gratifying than witnessing guests arriving in one state of mind (coming from their successful and busy lives) and leaving feeling more grounded and at peace with nature."  She also keeps tabs on their two curious and energetic kids and large dog. In her spare time, Emily loves cooking, design, music, and yoga. She blogs about healthy recipes and the whirlwind of today's parenting at LittleBabyWatson.com. Stewart is the partner you're more likely to see on the island. With a background in construction, he is better known to be rescuing someone from a tricky golf cart situation or taking on a repair. Between the two of them, there's no stone left unturned on Dewees!

Why Emily chose South Carolina

Dewees Island is a private barrier island off the coast of Charleston that is dedicated to preservation. We are a quick ferry ride from all of Charleston's charms, yet the island is peaceful and serene. Dewees remains in a much more natural state than many ocean islands. At the same time, the island has a beautiful community pool. Great fishing, birding, and beaches. We travel by golf cart. And with no stores or restaurants, Dewees is a magical escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life!

What makes this house unique

There’s loads to do. We enjoy the shelling, the ocean, bodysurfing, sunbathing, the community pool, the game room at the community center, tennis, canoeing and kayaking. There’s also fishing, crabbing, shrimping and shelling.

Perfect Island Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for our family! My kids loved being surrounded by so many trees. The loft areas in this house was especially great because of the extra sleeping space! Loved being nestled in the woods and enjoyed the screened in front porch! So excited to go back to Dewees and stay at Crosstrees again!

What an experience!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I decided to try out Dewees Island for the first time last year, and I have got to say, we cannot wait to come back this year! We stayed in this awesome house, lot 56- Crosstrees, and my kids loved it!! It was just like a tree house and it was so much fun! Emily was a great help for our stay! The emails were so informational and everything. It was nice to get away from the craziness of reality for a bit. She was also always quick to answer our questions if needed! Because wifi is limited, it was great for the kids to actually be kids instead of always on their phones! What an island experience it was!! I know we will be coming back again this year! So peaceful and such a great get away. The community on the island was also amazing. Everyone was so helpful and welcoming.

Great house

  • 4 of 5

Great house with a lot of room with a rustic feel. I loved the open rooms upstairs with the canvas curtain. The little reading nook above the rooms was an interesting element. This vacation island has wonderful beach privacy with a lot of sand dollars and adventure to be found. We loved crabbing and casting nets for shrimp. The highlight was having two golf carts at this house to explore the island. The house was well equipped. The house had an awesome set up for a crab boil downstairs including the big pot. It had a great amt of crabbing gear. Watching tv at night with the Roku didn't really work. The manager did loan us some movies. My only negative comment about the island is the brutal mosquitoes. More spray needs to be done and more frequently especially in light of the Zika virus scare. Not sure of the travel dates that we were there.

Crosstrees - Great kitchen and layout for teens

  • 4 of 5

The set-up of this house was quite different from others we've rented on the island. The lofts at either end of the house were appropriate for the teenagers we brought along (girls separate from boys!) and having the full bath on the loft level was great! We have rented for many years on the island, and the Crosstrees kitchen was the most well-stocked we've run across. It had every imaginable kitchen utensil and gadget, even a griddle! It was also very well stocked with beach chairs, beach towels, and bait buckets. The only challenges were the very narrow parking area for the golf carts (charging was a bit tricky) and the super bumpy path to the house (travel carefully on carts). Overall, Crosstrees was a nice fit for our family and friends.

It doesn't get much better than Dewees Island!

  • 4 of 5

Crosstrees is a unique house that might appeal to those who like open spaces with high lofts. Crosstrees has a nice, large screened in porch. This house is located on an amazing island, Dewees Island! Dewees Island is our favorite vacation destination. The beaches are pristine, and there are plenty of marsh areas for fishing! I definitely recommend Dewees Island!

Awesome Private Island

  • 4 of 5

This was our first time to Charleston and we had never heard of Dewees Island before. The island was incredible especially if you are seeking some privacy and a lot of beach to your self. It was fun to drive around and check out this whole island by the owners golf carts and we saw many deer on the roads or just off into the woods. The house is unique and we enjoyed the openness of the layout of the house. There are a few improvements needed that I informed the owner on another email. Charleston is a wonderful town especially for history and great restaurants. We will definitely be back to visit Dewees Island again.
