Overview

About the property

Newly Constructed, Cozy Cottage On A 100 Year Old Apple Orchard Ranch

A charming and eclectic combination of up cycled materials we've dubbed 'country cottage meets barnyard industrial'. We've taken building supplies such as rusted iron roofing and used as siding. A redwood water tank has been utilized for window and door trim. Old plumbing supplies are now door handles or coat hangers, window shutters transformed into kitchen cabinets. While rustic, it's extremely clean, well stocked and comfortable. The location is the perfect blend of easy access and privacy. The cottage is located separately from the main house, situated approximately 500 feet away and screened by trees. There are four steps leading up to the front porch, with the residence being on one level. The elevation makes for a pleasant view across the front lawn area and out towards the distant forest. It's been situated so as to be protected from the prevailing north winds, yet soak up the southern sunshine.

About nancy puder

Being central California natives, Mendocino was an unknown destination to us until the early 70's but once discovered, it was home. We settled on the coast, embraced 'back to the land', cultivating farm animals and gardens, learning how to run chainsaws and tractors without losing digits, eventually raising two sons and countless chickens. We purchased an overgrown apple orchard, designed and built our present house and continue to love and appreciate our lives here. This is a community of artists, fierce protectors of our coast and populated by people who can be counted on for support when needed. We know and love our neighbors, even the ones that may drive you a little bit crazy.

Our own love of travel inspired us to build a small cottage that would be a comfortable home away from home. We have the space and opportunity to share a piece of our paradise with others and look forward to meeting fellow travelers.

nancy puder purchased this cottage in 1988

Why nancy puder chose North Coast

Once you enter our gates, you won't question why we chose to live here. The property consists of gnarled, twisted apple trees, most planted around 1910. Though old and contorted, they still produce an amazing variety of heritage fruit. Open meadows are encircled by a forest of redwoods, fir and pine. The property backs up to Jackson State Forest, so essentially, we have a 90,000 acre backyard. Slopping down the south embankment approximately 1 mile, you reach Big River. Our location is close to town, yet considerably warmer than the coast. We are generally out of the fog belt with a 15-20 degree difference. What we lack in an ocean view, we make up with sunny days and open vistas.

What makes this cottage unique

Your private cottage is equipped with everything we could think of to make it special. A large front porch has a covered roof, enabling you to sit out and enjoy the view of the property, protected from drizzle and rain. A fire pit beckons for an evening spent under the stars. There's a claw foot bath tub on the back porch, just waiting for hot water and bubbles. While the tub is exposed to the elements, the deer are the only eyes that might sneak a peek.

It's a very short drive or bike ride to town. (Going to town is a cinch... all down hill. Coming back takes a bit more effort, or call and we'll pick you up :-) )

The cottage was designed and finished with attention to detail. All the amenities you need have been provided and some you may not even know you desired. Egyptian linens, down comforters, plush towels, organic soaps and lotions and numerous luxury items have been carefully chosen. We want you to feel pampered and relaxed.

Everything is impeccably maintained and the chickens and lambs were both friendly and charming.

The owner has created a comfortable retreat while being only 3 miles from whatever the visitor might want or need in town. She is personable without being invasive. The grounds and property are beautifully maintained. I highly recommended a visit to my friends. I traveled alone and felt both safe and comfortable there.

Owner's Response: Hi Diane, Thank you for writing a review... certainly didn't expect one, considering you just had surgery! It was a treat to visit Bowling Ball Beach with you. Always good to take the time to appreciate what is available in my own back yard. Or would the ocean be considered my front yard??? I will fully expect you back, hopefully soon, for some more adventures. We still need to sit around the fire, imbibe a bit of wine and talk about the details of Camino de Santiago. At the very least, help you decide which tract to take. I still vote for the English route, especially since it reminds me so much of Northern California. After all, there's no place like home. Speedy recovery and stay in touch. Nancy

Quaint, charming getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I traveled from Sacramento and stayed at Nancy's cottage over the July 4th holiday. The cottage is lovely and spacious, and we really appreciated all of the little 'extras' that came with it (outdoor shower/tub, fire pit, grill, etc.). We took advantage of it all and really enjoyed this relaxing retreat. It was easy to get to downtown from the cottage (a short 5-10 min drive). We'd recommend this place to anyone looking to visit Mendocino.

Highly recommend!

  • 5 of 5

I had the pleasure of staying in the cottage for about a month this past April while working in Fort Bragg. The cottage itself was very clean, is beautifully decorated, had all the amenities I needed, and was very comfortable and spacious. The property is beautiful and quiet, and it was such a pleasure to look out the window at all the critters living there - sheep, chicken, quail, jack rabbits, deer - and even be greeted by some of them. And finally, Nancy was such a nice, caring and gracious host. She always went above and beyond to make sure that I was comfortable and didn't need anything, and even brought me fresh eggs on several occasions.

I have nothing but good things to say about both Nancy and the cottage. I would highly recommend this property to anyone staying in the Mendocino or Fort Bragg areas.

Owner's Response: Hi Siobhan, Nice to see your little note. I hadn't noticed it until recently. I just want to wish you the very best in your future endeavors. You've accomplished quite a bit in your young life and I see only more possibilities ahead. Thank you for choosing the medical profession. Being part of the largest retirement age population, gives a whole different perspective of our medical care.... so my heartfelt appreciation for your gifts of service and devotion. Perhaps you'll find your way back to the coast to settle and contribute your talents to all the silver shoe generation! I send my very best to you.

Peaceful cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was wonderful! Decorated beautifully and very comfortable. The owner is superb, full of information about Mendocino and the surrounding area. Very gracious, and supplied us with fresh eggs and home-made fig-jam that was divine! Location is great, highly recommend this cottage for anyone visiting the Mendocino area! The chickens and sheep on the farm were a treat, loved this place and will certainly be back.

Owner's Response: Hi Mardel and Larry. Glad to know you made it safely home after your wonderings around Mendocino. It sounds like you ventured into the far recesses of the county, touching on the inland areas, as well as the coast. Mighty adventurous of you but then, being Texans, you're used to doing things in a big way.... bring that bionic knee back when fully installed so you can explore more of the coastline's trails. Happy trails!

Great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for a few nights recently during our trip to Mendocino. We really enjoyed it. The cottage was very cute, warm, welcoming, and nicely equipped. I made omelettes both mornings with fresh eggs from the owners chickens. And we enjoyed a bath outside both nights under the stars. The owner is very kind and she provided everything we could have needed. We truly enjoyed our stay here and would love to stay again during our next trip to Mendocino.

Owner's Response: Hi Jon, Thank you for sharing your experience. It was a delight exchanging a few conversations with you and Jennifer. Living fairly close, I do hope this summer will offer another opportunity for a return visit. Always nice to get out of the valley heat... besides, you didn't get the chance to play Ultimate Frisbee. Practice for the tournament. Any game you can play with a drink in hand, is Ultimate.

Wonderful Experience! Not just a place to stay.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is perfect, and the property is unique and fun to explore. The three baby sheep were adorable and the persistent chickens kept us entertained (not to mention delicious fresh eggs). Nancy and her sons gave fantastic recommendations for places to visit during our stay. They were incredibly gracious hosts. We couldn't ask for more!

Owner's Response: Hi Ricardo, Thank you for taking the time to write a review. It is very much appreciated. So glad you were able to relax and enjoy the property while visiting the coast. It's always gratifying to share our little "farm" with "city slickers"... You obviously kept your sense of humor with the chickens' persistence for hand outs ;-) They do tend to follow any one that offers something to eat. Fortunately, they share their eggs. The little lamb born while you were here, is already leaping around the orchard with his half sisters. He's almost as big as they are! What a difference a little testosterone makes. Thanks again for coming. Come back when you can. Best, Nancy

Mendocino is a historically significant area and is a registered national monument. The town itself is architecturally designed in the Victorian style. It is preserved and restricted to further development.

Mendocino Art Center was established in the 60's by artists leaving the high cost of living in the San Francisco area. It remains a vibrant attraction for artists coming to the coast to experience further growth in their fields of interest. Amateur, as well as professional artists, find inspiration with the environment of personal support.

There are numerous art galleries scattered throughout the town, as well as interesting and unique articles for sale in the quaint shops.

The town boasts many gourmet restaurants, often farm to table style and particularly organically grown, locally produced items.

Outdoor enthusiasts will relish the trails along the ocean bluffs, hiking the miles of forest haul roads, walking the many beaches or riding bikes on roadways or trails.

Sport fishing remains a strong component, primarily salmon, rock cod, crab and ling. Shell fish such as mussels and abalone attract the water hardy.

The near by town of Fort Bragg has a gorgeous botanical garden, located on the headlands. A full day can be filled strolling the gardens, walking the bluffs, whale watching, or even taking gardening classes.

There is a newly constructed aquatics park, boasting two huge indoor pools. Swimming lanes are separated from the lazy river moat which is heated to 85 degrees. There are numerous classes given in swimming, aerobics, spin, zumba, weight lifting, etc. An all day pass can be purchased or 'Silver Shoe' admission is free.
