A charming and eclectic combination of up cycled materials we've dubbed 'country cottage meets barnyard industrial'. We've taken building supplies such as rusted iron roofing and used as siding. A redwood water tank has been utilized for window and door trim. Old plumbing supplies are now door handles or coat hangers, window shutters transformed into kitchen cabinets. While rustic, it's extremely clean, well stocked and comfortable. The location is the perfect blend of easy access and privacy. The cottage is located separately from the main house, situated approximately 500 feet away and screened by trees. There are four steps leading up to the front porch, with the residence being on one level. The elevation makes for a pleasant view across the front lawn area and out towards the distant forest. It's been situated so as to be protected from the prevailing north winds, yet soak up the southern sunshine.

About nancy puder
Being central California natives, Mendocino was an unknown destination to us until the early 70's but once discovered, it was home. We settled on the coast, embraced 'back to the land', cultivating farm animals and gardens, learning how to run chainsaws and tractors without losing digits, eventually raising two sons and countless chickens. We purchased an overgrown apple orchard, designed and built our present house and continue to love and appreciate our lives here. This is a community of artists, fierce protectors of our coast and populated by people who can be counted on for support when needed. We know and love our neighbors, even the ones that may drive you a little bit crazy. Our own love of travel inspired us to build a small cottage that would be a comfortable home away from home. We have the space and opportunity to share a piece of our paradise with others and look forward to meeting fellow travelers.

Why nancy puder chose Mendocino
Once you enter our gates, you won't question why we chose to live here. The property consists of gnarled, twisted apple trees, most planted around 1910. Though old and contorted, they still produce an amazing variety of heritage fruit. Open meadows are encircled by a forest of redwoods, fir and pine. The property backs up to Jackson State Forest, so essentially, we have a 90,000 acre backyard. Slopping down the south embankment approximately 1 mile, you reach Big River. Our location is close to town, yet considerably warmer than the coast. We are generally out of the fog belt with a 15-20 degree difference. What we lack in an ocean view, we make up with sunny days and open vistas.
What makes this Cottage unique
Your private cottage is equipped with everything we could think of to make it special. A large front porch has a covered roof, enabling you to sit out and enjoy the view of the property, protected from drizzle and rain. A fire pit beckons for an evening spent under the stars. There's a claw foot bath tub on the back porch, just waiting for hot water and bubbles. While the tub is exposed to the elements, the deer are the only eyes that might sneak a peek. It's a very short drive or bike ride to town. (Going to town is a cinch... all down hill. Coming back takes a bit more effort, or call and we'll pick you up :-) ) The cottage was designed and finished with attention to detail. All the amenities you need have been provided and some you may not even know you desired. Egyptian linens, down comforters, plush towels, organic soaps and lotions and numerous luxury items have been carefully chosen. We want you to feel pampered and relaxed.

We really enjoyed our stay at Applegate cottage! It’s a charming, comfortable cottage with special touches like fresh dahlias on the kitchen table, fresh fruit in the refrigerator and eggs for breakfast. We loved the location as well as the suggestions Nancy gave us for places to eat and where we could enjoy a hike.
THE BEST STAY IN OUR TRIP
It was the most pleasant, relaxing and clean place to stay in our 3 week trip in WA, OR, ID and CA. Nancy was very attentive to our needs and wants, and most accommodating. We highly recommend this place for all occasion, and we wish we had more time in the area. Aloha Nancy!, from Hawaii.
So relaxing and laid back
This is our second stay at Applegate Cottage and as before was the most relaxing trip ever. Everything in the cottage is beautifully clean and the bed and sitting area are so comfortable. Nancy also gave us a great recommendation to go to the Noyo Harbor Inn and Restaurant. It was fantastic, went for happy hour one day and back for brunch the next! Lovely view of the backside of Noyo Harbor and newly remodeled, a real treat.
The bathtub on the back porch is great after a long day of exploring, my favorite spot!
Hoping to go back again next year, or sooner!
A bit of a time lapse in responding to you but I'm so glad it worked out that you were able to come back for a little visit. I always love catching up with returning guests (who feel more like old friends!) I have to agree with your sentiments about Noyo Harbor Inn. It's my new favorite restaurant on the coast. Hope you got a chance to look at the art work. It's the owner's daughter who painted them and she is a master artist. Trained in Florence and it shows. Such a gift to the coast to have someone lovingly restore the old place. Next time, I'll come with you for cocktail hour!
A home away from home...
Applegate cottage was a very clean and charming place for my family of three. Our 9 year old daughter loved to greet the chicken every morning, and check on how the garden was growing. We had everything we needed for a nice vacation. Another big hit was the fire pit where we roasted shmores. The grounds were quiet, and clean and we never went without anything: Grill, WiFi, fire, hot water, kitchen supplies, DVD player, etc. The best part was Nancy, the incredibly nice and attentive owner. We will be sure to make this an annual pilgrimage. David, Valya and Sophia
I've been quite in arrears responding to your kind review. I'm so glad that you felt at home on the property. My favorite part of having a rental is meeting and sharing with people staying here. Your daughter is adorable and it was fun spending time with her in the garden. Perhaps the seed has been planted and she will start her own garden at home. I loved her curiosity and adventuresome spirit. Do come back before she gets too cool to hang out.
A wonderful and quiet place to come and relax!
My husband and I loved the cottage, it was close to Fort Bragg, and lots of other fun places to explore. Nancy can recommend restaurants that will suit your taste and is also a very accommodating host. One of my favorite things about the cottage was the fire pit outside. Such an amazing little place!
Glad you were able to get away from your daily obligations and relax on the coast. Maybe next time, you'll get the chance to bring the kids and explore with them. I realize it's a nice break to come sans children but it might be easier to bring them along... don't forget about my business partner's place. Perfect for a larger spot to spread out. Hope the smoke and heat of the valley hasn't been too horrible for you. We've been fortunate along the coast, no smoke to speak of and cool breeze. My heart does go out to everyone affected by these fires.
CA North Coast Comfort
We travelled to Mendocino from the "Other Coast" to explore the area without plans set in stone. Choosing Applegate Cottage was one of the best moves of our vacation! The little home is charming and is so thoughtfully decorated and presented with Northern Cal flair. The highlights, for us, were the comfy bed, the outdoor bathtub, and the much appreciated trip-planning help of our host, Nancy, who steered us into much better travel plans than we had thought of!
We enjoyed Hendy Woods, Russian Gulch SP, the Cabrillo Lighthouse, the Montgomery Woods SR, and Nancy's picks for yummy dinners - Stone and Embers and the Harbor Inn in Ft Bragg.
Fresh eggs and beautiful table flowers were provided for our enjoyment. The cottage is in a calm and quiet rural area about 5 minutes' drive from town. Although we were at first blue about not having TV stations (for watching the World Cup), the excellent Internet there allowed us to see the matches on our IPad. Yay!
As fellow-VRBO'ers ourselves, we realize the effort and love that goes into offering a lodging property, and Nancy with her Applegate Cottage has set the bar very high. Thank you for a most wonderful vacation spot.
Hi Anne and Paul,
You must have found your way home by now, unpacked and back into your daily routine. Hopefully memories of your west coast adventure will remain, long after your sore muscles have healed. It was really nice to have the opportunity to visit with you, while you were here. I love your adventurous spirit and generous outlook on life. It brought a smile to my face to see the effort and organizational clean up... linens neatly tucked into the pillow case ;-) It's obvious you have your own rental property! Thanks for being so courteous. I wish you the best for your future travels.
Mendocino is a historically significant area and is a registered national monument. The town itself is architecturally designed in the Victorian style. It is preserved and restricted to further development.
Mendocino Art Center was established in the 60's by artists leaving the high cost of living in the San Francisco area. It remains a vibrant attraction for artists coming to the coast to experience further growth in their fields of interest. Amateur, as well as professional artists, find inspiration with the environment of personal support.
There are numerous art galleries scattered throughout the town, as well as interesting and unique articles for sale in the quaint shops.
The town boasts many gourmet restaurants, often farm to table style and particularly organically grown, locally produced items.
Outdoor enthusiasts will relish the trails along the ocean bluffs, hiking the miles of forest haul roads, walking the many beaches or riding bikes on roadways or trails.
Sport fishing remains a strong component, primarily salmon, rock cod, crab and ling. Shell fish such as mussels and abalone attract the water hardy.
The near by town of Fort Bragg has a gorgeous botanical garden, located on the headlands. A full day can be filled strolling the gardens, walking the bluffs, whale watching, or even taking gardening classes.
There is a newly constructed aquatics park, boasting two huge indoor pools. Swimming lanes are separated from the lazy river moat which is heated to 85 degrees. There are numerous classes given in swimming, aerobics, spin, zumba, weight lifting, etc. An all day pass can be purchased or 'Silver Shoe' admission is free.
