About G. Markley

Gary's family is one of the oldest families on the lake. His Grandfather was a Presbyterian Minister in Bartlesville Oklahoma who took summers off to come all the way to Torch Lake to fish, eventually retiring here and serving the Elk Rapids Presbyterian church. Gary's Dad retired as an MD here. Now it's Gary's turn.

G. Markley purchased this cabin in 1920

Why G. Markley chose Rapid City

One of the first cottages on the south end of the lake, it was acquired around 1920 because it was next door to the family cottage. It has a knotty pine interior, hardwood floors, and ceramic tile in the kitchen and bathroom.

What makes this cabin unique

You will fall in love with this cottage and the lake from the large covered porch. This is the spot to be on the lake, close enough to the sand bar if you want to spend time there but far enough away to not be bothered by all the boats and activity.

We had a beautiful stay and are certain we're coming back next summer!

  • 5 of 5

Cottage is no more than 25 feet from water with your own dock, moor for boat, plenty of kayaks to share, swim platform. Two fans supplied in cottage helped us get through a couple of very warm, humid nights. Plenty of towels, sheets, pillows, t.p, paper towel. Room to park our trailer, two motorcycles and bicycles. Kitchen is well stocked with dishes, cooking necessities, glasses, coffee maker, etc. Icing on the cake was Gary himself. Nice to have a neighbor to talk to right next door. We don't like to do dishes, so we took our own paper plates and napkins.

This cottage felt like home!

  • 5 of 5

I can honestly say that this cottage was by far, the NICEST place I've stayed in a long time! It was exactly as described and so much more! This cottage couldn't have been any more perfect in my opinion.

The close proximity to Torch Lake was fantastic! I enjoyed the covered porch every morning and sat out in the Adirondack chairs every night and enjoyed the most amazing stars. Each night, I saw numerous shooting stars and the Milky Way was totally visible.

The owners were wonderful and it was nice to know they were right next door if I should have needed anything. The area was quiet at night so I enjoyed having the windows open to listen to the waves lap at the shore.

I have every intention of making Torch Lake Dream Cottage my home base EVERY year! To me, this was truly "going home".

If you want a relaxing place to stay, you don't need a fancy hotel or condo, you NEED to stay at Torch Lake Dream Cottage. It will do your heart and soul a world good!

It's nice to know there are still places that are this wonderful and friendly to visit. Elk Rapids and Traverse City are nearby as are several other beautiful lake communities. If you want the Up North experience then book this cottage for your next vacation!

Can't miss rental

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here in early August and this rental is ideal for any family vacation. We brought our boat and moored our 19' boat out front. Great access to the boat, went out multiple times per day. Love the lake and all of the surrounding towns. Rapid City, Alden, Elk Rapids in 20 minutes, Bellaire in the same, plenty to see and do. Stayed at many places on the lake and this was the best. The views and the swimming area out front are awesome. Even if we did not have a boat, this is where I would stay. Again, great swimming out front, paddle boat and kayaks for use, awesome porch where we ate most meals. Hesitant to provide such a great review because we don't want it to book up before we make our next reservation. The owner Gary was also very helpful and fun to talk to. Get to know him a little bit. Great vacation for our family of 4.
