About Mike and Mary Hayward

We have been coming to Duck for almost two decades to vacation. Each time we were here we would fantasize about owning a little something of this wonderful island to enjoy whenever we could. Finally, just this year we took the plunge and now own Spindrift. It is just the right size and is our special haven to escape to when the pressures of real life get to us and we need ocean beach time to regroup. We hope you too will find that peace of mind and sense of rejuvenation that we get each time we come to Spindrift. We look forward to sharing it with you and your family. We hope you will select Spindrift as your beach vacation rental to make cherishable beach memories to remember in the years to come.

Mike and Mary Hayward purchased this house in 2015

Why Mike and Mary Hayward chose Duck

Spindrift is located right on the ocean on one of the most beautiful east coast beaches in the U.S. It has the best view and private access for year round beach front enjoyment! Spectacular sunrises and moon rises greet you daily! We have had so much fun making Spindrift a comfortable place to relax with many details we enjoy for our own comfort and down time. We enjoy our morning coffee on Spindrift's ocean front deck and our lovely sunsets from our sound side deck. Sometimes we see dolphins swimming right in front of Spindrift and deer grazing right in back of Spindrift!

Spindrift is located only a mile and half from the town of Duck, which is a very walkable, bike and dog-friendly quaint coastal village with super friendly folk and wonderful shopping, dining and many fun things to do for you and the family. You can rent kayaks, canoes, bikes, tandem bikes, etc., to enjoy the walking/biking trail and many water activities Duck has to offer. Take yoga classes on the Duck green in the summer or in the winter practice yoga at Village Yoga. Watch family friendly free movies on Friday evenings on the town green in the summer, stroll the sound-side boardwalk for ice cream, Duck Doughnuts, and watch the ospreys nesting. We love it here and come all the time.

What makes this house unique

With the beach in front of you and great shopping, restaurants and a park within walking distance, you may not want to get into your car to explore the many exciting places on the Outer Banks. There are four great lighthouses that are worth seeing - the Currituck Beach Lighthouse in Corolla, Bodie Island Lighthouse, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and Ocracoke Island Lighthouse which you have to take a ferry to get to the island. The Whalehead Club and Wildlife Educational Center are interesting. The site of the first airplane flight by the Wright brothers is a National Park in Kill Devil Hills. The park displays replicas of the original Wright Flyer. Jockey's Ridge, the tallest sand dune on the east coast is in Nags Head. Climbing to the top to view the sunset over the sound is memorable. Keep driving south on Rt. 12 and you reach Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Oregon Inlet. A visit to the Manteo Waterfront and the Elizabethan Gardens is a great trip. Don't forget Jeannette's Pier in south Nags Head for fishing and aquariums.

Notes:
Fall and winter bring their own charm to the Outer Banks. The big crowds are gone and long walks on the beach often have one set of foot prints - yours. September and October are warm and golden; the sea oats are full and heavy, waving over the dunes. The traffic is gone, so a trip to watch the fish come in or just to go out to dinner is a pleasure - no waiting. If fishing is your passion, the piers and the surf off of our beach have produced fantastic catches. Golf is another activity that is more pleasurable during warm days in fall and winter. There are many courses to choose from and again - no waiting. Most of the shops have 'end of the season' sales and the restaurants are happy to see you without reservations. Shells on the beach appear more plentiful. Many people - including the owners - prefer this slower season.

Excellent views & Wonderful Home

  • 5 of 5

This is our 2nd time staying at Spindrift, and it was just as wonderful as the 1st time ! Love the updates...the new flooring is beautiful and practical. The new LR furniture is nice and comfortable. Plenty of room for all of us, well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds (all very important!). This time we took advantage of the community pool...the grand babes loved it ! And the recent beach replenishment project has created larger beaches and much easier and more gradual access to the ocean without disrupting the beautiful view at all !! Loved our stay and hope to go back again next year !! Thanks Mike and Mary, for a Wonderful vacation !!

Great house, great view

  • 5 of 5

This is our second time at Spindrift and it's so perfect for us. Exactly the space we need for our extended family (including dog) and right on the beach. I'd also like to note that the kitchen supplies are definitely a step up from what you normally get at a beach rental. We like to cook so we appreciate that very much! Thanks so much for another great stay.

Awesome oceanfront stay at SPRINDRIFT

  • 5 of 5

Spent a week at this wonderful home and definitely walked away with memories from a great vacation. Home is clean, comfortable, and nicely furnished. It has a great layout for friends and family travelling together. Kitchen and great room in center, and 2 bdrms +1 bth on each side. Step out to the deck and your just a few steps from the beach! Towels and linens would have been nice given the price point. We enjoyed daily walks on the beach, saw dolphins several times, and the beach was not overcrowded at any time. After dinner drinks on the deck listening to the tide come in. Awesome days. Duck village boardwalk, restaurants, and shops are in walking distance and the locals know how to treat tourists... which understandably can be a challenge, but not here. Tanger outlets are @ 30mins drive with some great shops along the way. Groceries, package store, every necessity was near by. The neighborhood was off the main road and both child and pet friendly. Mike and Mary were very responsive. Thank you again for sharing your beautiful home. We hope to return next summer.

Another wonderful week spent at Spindrift

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at Spindrift several times and hope to be able to return whenever we are vacationing in Duck. It has become our favorite place to stay! We love spending time on the dune deck - its almost like sitting on the beach itself - it is so close. The new larger beach since the beach nourishment project was completed is wonderful! Great walks and lots of shells to be found. Always nice to see the new updates that have been done to the house - love the new flooring and new couch too!

Very nice !

  • 5 of 5

Amazing property ! Right on the beach (I do not think it can get closer than this), 15-20 minute walk or 5 minute bike ride to the town (restaurants, bars, boardwalk)- there is a paved bike/walk path running parallel to the road to the town. No big chain stores in the town but the town has everything you would need for a few days there.

House was well stocked, although linens were not provided- maybe its a VRBO thing. Very nice decor. Amazing view from the living room. The clothes dryer was broken- may be it was broken right before we checked in and they did not get to fix it, I don't know.

Overall a memorable experience ! I would definitely come back again and bring friends with us if we can- I am sure this place is booked months in advance.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the note. The old dryer had a rough few weeks! The handle broke twice and then the dryer itself stopped working all within three weeks. The good news...is that we replaced the dryer (and also the washer which was still working, but was around the same age) in early June.

Great location!

  • 4 of 5

This is a great place to stay in Duck with phenomenal beach access! You cannot beat the view! The inside is also nicely decorated and comfortable for a small group. It was great to be able to bring our dog with and very convenient to have a single level floor plan indoors. The stairs to the front of the house are a bit steep, but as is the case with the majority of the elevated homes built in this area.

For the price point, it would have been preferable to have some updated kitchen ware and the screen to the back patio has some small holes which can let the dune bugs in at night and is probably on the list of future fixes, but those are minor. Also, something to know, paper products and linens are not included, but that was clearly outlined in the check in information the owners provide, so we were prepared.

Overall this is a nice rental in a great location, and we would return!
