About Mike and Mary Hayward

We have been coming to Duck for almost two decades to vacation. Each time we were here we would fantasize about owning a little something of this wonderful island to enjoy whenever we could. Finally, just this year we took the plunge and now own Spindrift. It is just the right size and is our special haven to escape to when the pressures of real life get to us and we need ocean beach time to regroup. We hope you too will find that peace of mind and sense of rejuvenation that we get each time we come to Spindrift. We look forward to sharing it with you and your family. We hope you will select Spindrift as your beach vacation rental to make cherishable beach memories to remember in the years to come.

Mike and Mary Hayward purchased this house in 2015

Why Mike and Mary Hayward chose Duck

Spindrift is located right on the ocean on one of the most beautiful east coast beaches in the U.S. It has the best view and private access for year round beach front enjoyment! Spectacular sunrises and moon rises greet you daily! We have had so much fun making Spindrift a comfortable place to relax with many details we enjoy for our own comfort and down time. We enjoy our morning coffee on Spindrift's ocean front deck and our lovely sunsets from our sound side deck. Sometimes we see dolphins swimming right in front of Spindrift and deer grazing right in back of Spindrift!

Spindrift is located only a mile and half from the town of Duck, which is a very walkable, bike and dog-friendly quaint coastal village with super friendly folk and wonderful shopping, dining and many fun things to do for you and the family. You can rent kayaks, canoes, bikes, tandem bikes, etc., to enjoy the walking/biking trail and many water activities Duck has to offer. Take yoga classes on the Duck green in the summer or in the winter practice yoga at Village Yoga. Watch family friendly free movies on Friday evenings on the town green in the summer, stroll the sound-side boardwalk for ice cream, Duck Doughnuts, and watch the ospreys nesting. We love it here and come all the time.

What makes this house unique

With the beach in front of you and great shopping, restaurants and a park within walking distance, you may not want to get into your car to explore the many exciting places on the Outer Banks. There are four great lighthouses that are worth seeing - the Currituck Beach Lighthouse in Corolla, Bodie Island Lighthouse, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and Ocracoke Island Lighthouse which you have to take a ferry to get to the island. The Whalehead Club and Wildlife Educational Center are interesting. The site of the first airplane flight by the Wright brothers is a National Park in Kill Devil Hills. The park displays replicas of the original Wright Flyer. Jockey's Ridge, the tallest sand dune on the east coast is in Nags Head. Climbing to the top to view the sunset over the sound is memorable. Keep driving south on Rt. 12 and you reach Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Oregon Inlet. A visit to the Manteo Waterfront and the Elizabethan Gardens is a great trip. Don't forget Jeannette's Pier in south Nags Head for fishing and aquariums.

Fall and winter bring their own charm to the Outer Banks. The big crowds are gone and long walks on the beach often have one set of foot prints - yours. September and October are warm and golden; the sea oats are full and heavy, waving over the dunes. The traffic is gone, so a trip to watch the fish come in or just to go out to dinner is a pleasure - no waiting. If fishing is your passion, the piers and the surf off of our beach have produced fantastic catches. Golf is another activity that is more pleasurable during warm days in fall and winter. There are many courses to choose from and again - no waiting. Most of the shops have 'end of the season' sales and the restaurants are happy to see you without reservations. Shells on the beach appear more plentiful. Many people - including the owners - prefer this slower season.

Slice of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

My experience in the past has been that the pictures of the property really don't represent the current state of the house. That is NOT the case with this house. The house was clean and well cared for. It appears that the air conditioner is new, which although not as important for our October stay will be nice during the summer months.

It was decorated in an adorable beach theme without going over the top or looking cheesy. I think we've all seen those houses that have gone too far. No one really wants to use a bathroom with an octopus toilet paper holder, do they? If you do, then this house is not for you. Both bathrooms had clearly recently been updated with new sinks, flooring, fixtures and everything else. The kitchen also sported a new renovation.

It is the perfect size for a quiet vacation where you "forget" to invite those 15 family members that always tag along and eat all your food. My only concern is that more people will see this review and reserve it before I have the opportunity to plan my next beach vacation.

You could not get any closer to the beach with out pitching a tent on the beach. Lovely area and very dog friendly community. We also enjoyed the local dog park in Kitty Hawk.

We loved the Beach house

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our time at your beach house , the fact that it sits right on the beach made it so special. We would just walk out the door and you were on the beach, We also loved the outdoor shower it was great for getting the sand off.

We look forward to coming back in the future . !!

View is magnificent

  • 3 of 5

The view of the water made our visit memorable. But the house needs some TLC. Wall to wall carpet is stained. Slip covers either need a good cleaning or are also stained. Paint over shower is peeling. I ended up cleaning the ceiling fan because of the dust hanging off of the blades.

On The positive side, the kitchen is very well-stocked with equipment and the beds were comfortable.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the feedback. We are down at the beach right now, and just yesterday we ordered an entire new floor for the living room and bedrooms (baths were newly tiled recently). Also we ordered an new sofa to replace the existing sofa and love seat that have seen better days, to be sure. The bathroom ceiling is on today's "honey-do" list!!

Enjoyed our time there

  • 3 of 5

This property is the perfect location with great views. The H shape design and upgrades to kitchen and baths are well thought out.

Must admit we were less than impressed with the multiple stains on the living room carpet and couches and lack of beach chairs.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the feedback. The carpet and couches were cleaned in the middle of the season; we plan on replacing them this off season...

Ocean Front Gem

  • 5 of 5

Our second stay at Spindrift was more amazing than the first. The house is perfectly decorated and equipped. The sand replenishment project completed this past June really expanded the beach area and created more of a gradual surf area, eliminating the shore break. Nothing can beat the open deck out onto the dunes, sand and surf. We saw dolphin, plenty of bait fish and even a whale! With the Army Corps of Engineers just a few properties to the South, every day there is something new and exciting to see ... Coastal Research Amphibious Vehicle (CRAB) or the Lighter Amphibious Re-Supply Cargo (LARC). We hope to come back every summer!
