Overview

About the property

Beautiful top floor condo w/ amazing view of Papohaku Beach and available car

Hale Kamaluhia (Hawaiian for House of Serenity), is our tropical retreat on the West coast of Molokai. This desirable second floor condo has vaulted ceilings which adds to the feeling of openness and is in one of the few buildings in the resort that have an unobstructed view of Papohaku Beach (One of the longest white sand beach in Hawaii, and it is usually empty). Because we live on Molokai, it allows us to personally oversee the condo. We are in our unit before and after each guest to make sure everything is clean and in good working order and we are also available to answer any questions you may have about Molokai, our unit, current weather conditions, best places to go, how to travel here, etc.

Hale Kamaluhia is a passion of ours and we want our guests to feel like they are coming to a cherished family retreat. We have tried to provide most of what you might need except for food and clothing. For your convenience we have provided beach chairs, beach towels, beach umbrella, a small cooler, small beverage cooler, snorkel gear, tennis rackets, and binoculars for whale watching in the Winter months. You will find our kitchen fully stocked with starter coffee, tea, spices, olive oil & vinegar, rice etc.

Rental cars are very expensive and sometimes hard to acquire on Molokai, which is why we offer one you can rent with the unit at a reasonable rate. We handle the car rental through TURO as they validate drivers for us and provide insurance. If you rent one of our vehicles and select airport pickup/drop off, we will be at the airport when you arrive to hand you the keys and answer any last minute questions. Currently we have a Jeep or CRV for $59 a day and 2 Nissan Versa's for $46 a day (depending on availability). All of our vehicles are clean and well maintained and about 1/3 - 1/2 of the prices of the rental cars at the airport. Mahalo for considering Hale Kamaluhia for your next getaway and we hope to see you soon.

If you are looking for a place closer to town or the water, please check out our 2 bedroom ocean side B&B (1044414), the first and currently only permitted B&B on Molokai.

About Yvette Carlton

We came to Hawaii (Oahu) from New England with the Navy back in 1989 and fell in love with the people, the island, and the climate. We were blessed to return to Oahu again in 2009, but the increasing traffic made it less enjoyable & took a toll on us. In May of 2015, we made our first visit to Molokai & immediately fell in love with the island and the people. It's like "country" in the tropics. Imagine Hawaii of the past, unspoiled country and untouched beaches, no traffic & no stoplights! It reminded us a bit of the Oahu we knew 25 years ago, but even less developed. We retired from the Air Force in 2016 and moved to Molokai full time, enabling us to focus on managing and maintaining our vacation rentals. If you like lights, noise, chain stores & restaurants, construction and need constant entertainment, then Molokai may not be for you. But if you love the ocean, are looking for peace, tranquility, beauty and want to see the Hawaii of yesterday, you may never want to leave.

Yvette Carlton purchased this condo in 2015

Why Yvette Carlton chose Maunaloa

Molokai is an amazing place. Unless you have actually been here, it is hard to explain. It is surreal to be the only one on a beautiful pristine beach in Hawaii or to come to a stop while driving, only because you want to, or because you've arrived at your destination. There are only 2 gas stations, 2 grocery stores, and a few restaurants in town. You can buy organic produce and fruit from Kumu Farms (open Tues-Fri) and grass-fed meat fresh from Moloka'i Livestock Cooperative (M-F 7:30 am - 3:00 pm). Because the closest restaurant is 20 miles away, you'll want to cook most of your meals. There are grills right at the condo to help you do just that, as well as a kitchen stocked with everything you need to prepare anything from scrambled eggs to a full gourmet meal. We have tried to provide everything that you need to enjoy your stay and strive to continuously improve.

What makes this condo unique

Hale Kamaluhia is not just another vacation rental, it is a passion of ours. Since we retired from the Air Force in 2016 and moved to Molokai, we get to focus all of our attention on Hale Kamaluhia and Kahakai Hale ensuring our guest have the best time that we can provide (within our control). We are one of the few owners who actually live here and are in our unit after every guest to make sure everything is clean and in good working order. We are available to answer any question you may have about Molokai, our unit, current weather conditions, best places to go, how to fly in here. We want our guests to feel like they are coming home so we have tried to provide everything you could need (except food & clothes) and are always trying to improve and welcome suggestions. Our condo and Molokai offer the chance to get away from it all. Enjoy the view of Papohaku Beach from our large lanai, walk along the beautiful pristine beaches (usually alone), drive on roads where there are very few other travelers, listen to what nature sounds like when there are no man made noises to clutter it up. Fall asleep to the sound of the wind or the waves on the rocks. Hale Kamaluhia is on the second floor, so we never close the sliding glass doors which enables us to enjoy the constant ocean breeze and hear the waves and wind. When you are here, you can truly relax and unwind. Mahalo for considering us for you next getaway.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We've stayed at in at least 10-20 airbnb's in various places in the world, and this was the best. Incredible cleanliness in a hot, sandy place - I'm not even sure how they get it so clean. Mike and Yvette have thought through every detail - the condo is more than well-equipped: great beach gear, cookware, fans, bikes, ample towels, etc. Really high quality stuff, too. Condo was well-decorated, which was really nice as other condos we've stayed at in hawaii often had nursing home decor. Condo complex pool is really well kept (so are the bbq's), nearby beaches are amazing, and of course the island is a uniquely incredible place. Mike and Yvette were fantastic hosts - from meeting us at the airport (we rented one of their jeeps, which was a perfect vehicle for moloka'i) to giving us tips about the island to helping us with kayaking and paddleboarding at their place near town. It's clear Mike and Yvette care deeply about guests' experience and love helping others appreciate Moloka'i. Highly recommend Mike and Yvette's place - and if you're considering it, you might also call them about a bed and breakfast apartment they're opening soon in their house.

Notes:
Molokai is a quiet island, about 1/3 the size of Oahu & has only 7,000 residents and no more than 1,000 visitors at any given time. There are no chain stores or restaurants, no street lights, no noise. You will enjoy peace & quiet, empty pristine beaches, beautiful bright stars at night and the ability to hear yourself think. That is why we named our condo Hale Kamaluhia (Hawaiian for House of Serenity). Molokai provides serenity and we all need that at least once in a while. If you need to unplug and recharge, this is the place for you.

We had a wonderful and relaxing time on Molokai. The condo was very comfortable and relaxing. We enjoyed the sunsets from the lanai and also from the nearby beach. Yvette and Mike were great hosts.

Perfect for a romantic getaway!

  • 5 of 5

It had everything I needed including a spare sewing kit that I needed last minute. It was sparkling clean and beautiful when we arrived. The sace is light and open there is a cool sea breeze. We used the car and had no problems. It was perfect for the two of us and I would recommend it to others.

Great experience

  • 4 of 5

This was a great little condo, my only teeny tiny reservation was that it was really hot the first day we got there and no AC. No real legitimate complaints though, the owner was very easy to work with and friendly. I would probably stay closer to town next time but this was a nice little spot :)))

Stay at Ke Nani Kai

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time staying there and really enjoyed a hike into Kalaupapa and a tour that we did there. The owners of the apartment obviously love Hawai'i and Molokai in particular and are passionate to ensure that the people that stay there have a lovely time.

Owner's Response: Aloha Janet, We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Thank you for bringing the squeaky bathroom door to our attention. It has been taken care of. If you had contacted us during your stay, I could have taken care of it then and brought you another luggage rack. We used to have 2 racks in the unit, but we found that most people did not use them, so we removed one to free up space. Mahalo, Mike

Well equipped unit.

  • 4 of 5

At first communication lacked the announcement of which unit was allocated to us but an accommodating on site manager was able to point us in the direction of a well structured unit with all equipment longed for aswell in the kitchen as gear for snorkeling.

The car we rented through the owners was comfortable and brought us to all places we wanted to visit.

Highlight was the trek down into the Kalaupapa Peninsula, walk in/ flight out, to visit the place of the leper colony. Well worth the effort.

Just a tip in regards to arranging you trip to Kalaupapa. Do not book your trip through 'Hawaii's Best Activities LLC' as they overcharged us x3 for the flight back to top side. You can book direct with Makani Kai Air.

Thanks to Mike and Yvette for being readily contactable.

Owner's Response: We are glad you enjoyed your stay on Molokai and in our unit. I am puzzled that you had trouble finding the unit, as the location (as well as unit #) is clearly listed on VRBO and I also repeated the directions when we met at the airport on your arrival. We have had no other guests experience this, but we will try to make it even more clear in the future. Aloha, Mike & Yvette

We are a few minutes walk from 4 beautiful beaches, all are good for fishing and some are good for snorkeling and swimming (depending on the season). The tour of Kalaupapa is a must. You can hike, take the mules or fly. There is also a rain forest that you need a 4WD to drive up in to,, but it is well worth it. There is a picnic area and a beautiful hike at the top.
