About Dorothy Gager

My husband and I are retired civil engineer, and educator, now artist. We have traveled China, Nepal, Lhasa, France, England, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Tangiers, Thailand, Cambodia, and most of the National Parks in the USA. My husband is a mountain climber and has climbed over 50 Sierra peaks including several in Yosemite. I read to Senior Centers Without Walls via a conference call. I also do art, and have a bronze piece (Junior Birdman) in the Air and Space Museum in Balboa Park. We are a long way from our roots which are in South Dakota, Indiana, and Montana. !!!

Why Dorothy Gager chose South Park

This home was my husband's family home and has been passed down to us. We recently endured a fire which resulted in a total renovation. We love the persimmon tree which offers shade over the deck and abundantly produces fruit in October and November. Our father planted that tree 40 years ago. He also planted the sweetest naval orange tree whose fruit ripens in December through February.

What makes this house unique

In the soft San Diego evenings, you will love to sit in the glider on the back deck to watch the sun set over the palm trees. If you are a winter guest, you may enjoy the Persimmons and Naval and Mandarin oranges in the back yard, or a cozy fire in the living room. A Ninja juicer in the kitchen will offer great smoothie options. The flag on the desk in the living room is from our father's service in the Seabees during WWII. He served on Kwajalein Atoll in the South Pacific. Legend has it that the house served servicemen in another way. After our parents purchased the house, several return "guests" knocked on the door requesting "Evelyn". We think she was a great patriot!

Infrequently, guests have mentioned air traffic noise, but it does not bother most travelers. A white noise machine is available for the most sensitive.

Charming and very clean! We loved the neighborhood and found many cute restaurants .

  • 5 of 5

This was a great house to stay at for our San Diego vacation. It was fully equipped with everything we needed. We enjoyed exploring the neighborhood and found a charming breakfast spot , Grants Market. It was a good location to explore the city and surrounding area from with the use of Lyft. We especially enjoyed the spacious living room, dining room and kitchen! The beds were wonderful! We all had a great night sleep! If we ever return to San Diego we would stay here again. Thanks Dorothy for the hospitality!

Owner's Response: We sincerely enjoy providing a place of cleanliness and comfort for our guests. Grant's Market is just one of several places we recommend to guests on our "Eateries and Such" attachment to help acclimate people to the unique South Park neighborhood.

Quiet, comfortable and cute cottage. Perfect for a trip to San Diego

  • 5 of 5

This place is great! Came into town for business meetings and felt like we had all of the comforts of home. From the great communication with our host, to well Labelle's information around the house, to VERY comfortable beds/sheets they truly thought of everything. Would definitely return again in the future.

Delightful and beautiful cottage

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful and wonderfully equipped cottage with lots of room for couples , friends or even a family with kids. New hardwood floors through out. Parking for muliple cars in driveway and extra space usually available on the street. Quiet neighborhood with an easy walk to shops, restaurants and Target express. Only two blocks to Balboa Park. Only disappointment was no access to news channels, ESPN ect....only local broadcast stations .
