About Clay, Fredericka, and Elizabeth Thompson
We are the Thompson family: Clay and Fredericka and (daughter) Elizabeth. We are the owners of Claiborne & Churchill Winery, founded in 1983 and located in the heart of the Edna Valley, just outside the charming town of San Luis Obispo, California. We have remodeled the original farmhouse on the property so that one-half is now a vacation rental.
Clay, Fredericka, and Elizabeth Thompson purchased this Cottage in 1990
Why Clay, Fredericka, and Elizabeth Thompson chose San Luis Obispo
We fell in love with this area and its wine culture while traveling up the California coast on a business trip, away from our hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Not long after, we left our jobs in Michigan, moved to San Luis Obispo, and began working in the local wine industry, beginning our own small wine production in 1983. In 1990 we were able to purchase our present property, and in 1995 we built a small winery and tasting room using eco-friendly "straw-bale" construction methods.
What makes this Cottage unique
Our guest cottage is an ideal place to relax, wind down, and "wine-down," as we say. It also makes a perfect base from which to explore this beautiful area. A dozen or more wine tasting rooms are within a fifteen minute drive, and the ocean is only five miles away, with sunning, surfing, and beach-combing opportunities. The charming towns of San Luis Obispo and Arroyo Grande are each within a ten-minute drive, each with its own shopping and cultural amenities. The local restaurant scene offers a variety of quality experiences, from casual to fine dining. Outdoor adventures such as biking the backroads or hiking the local trails are readily available.

Wanted to stay longer!
Elizabeth was so helpful and friendly! She helped us to find the best hiking trails in the area and was very accommodating. The winery offered some excellent wines, and the cottage was incredibly cozy. We will definitely come again, but will stay longer than four nights next time. We cooked some memorable meals in the wonderful kitchen, and our various hikes are not to be forgotten.
We were very excited to stay at this adorable cottage on the winery's property and we were not disappointed. Right from our arrival at the tasting room, while we did a quick tasting, one of the staff let Lizzy know we arrived. She was friendly and gifted us a bottle of one of the wines we enjoyed. She walked us over and ran through all of the details. The cottage was clean and airy and fresh. There was a basket of treats and a full kitchen as well as a bbq available for our use. Even thought the cottage was on a main thoroughfare, it was quiet in the evening and early morning hours. The location was central to downtown and in the midst of a number of other wineries. Very relaxing and overall, we would definitely stay there again.
Wonderful spot! A 5 in every category
Lovely and well appointed spot with comfy beds and appreciated amenities. The winery owners were simply delightful people we enjoyed tasting their wonderful wine with. The outdoor garden was a great place to connect with visiting family and the location was close to the campus at CalPoly where we visited a daughter and to the many wineries nearby where we went tasting. We will be back next year!
This cottage is a true GEM! The owners - Clay, Fredericka, and Elizabeth were so sweet! They met us at the winery and brought us into the cottage! We were greeted with wine and a basket of goodies!
The cottage was neat and decorated so beautifully! We spent hours in the backyard enjoying the beauty of the wine country! I recommend staying here! We will definitely be back!
