Relaxed and charming

  • 5 of 5

Our stay here was fantastic. The location is perfect for traveling to volcanos national park. The condo was clean and well equipped with dishes, blankets, a brand new tv and lots of movies. There were fresh flowers in just about every room! The bathroom also had everything we needed. Lots of shampoo and stuff like that. Also, there was salad dressings and such in the fridge.

This place is very laid back and charming -- not uptight and stuffy -- I could relax and allow my young son to play on the property. It wasn't so immaculate that I had to be the helicopter parent... it was so relaxing!

Ms. Linda was great. She had lots of knowledge about the island and gave us fresh-picked exotic fruits along with even more fresh flowers! She even allowed me to take my son by her house to see her beautiful birds and play with her puppy. My son was very impressed with the unique, creative style of the place. We had lots of fun playing "I spy" over there.

Botanical Paradise

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is clean and comfortable, secluded, and situated in a botanical paradise. Surrounded by lush Hawaiian jungle, there are flowers everywhere you look, and an endless variety of orchids, fruit trees, and exotic plants.

This was an escape from ordinary life. A wonderful way to experience the real Hawaii, away from the usual tourist traps.

The hostess is delightful and informative.

Needs Work--Could Be 5 Stars

  • 3 of 5

Linda is a nice lady and her place is good, but it does need some work. First, the positives--Linda is attentive and responds to your messages. The property has pretty landscaping and we felt safe on the property. The kitchen is well equipped, the place has lots of room for your gear and suitcases, and you can choose which bedroom suits you (we chose the smaller one with the firmer bed). There is a washer and dryer, which is very handy, just bring your own detergent. There was a nice selection of toiletries for use in the bath.

Now for the not so good--there are no fish ponds and Linda told us there have been no fish ponds for 2 YEARS! I selected this property because of the fish ponds. I feel advertising ponds when there are none is like ordering and paying for pancakes and then being told that they are out of syrup. The listing needs to be modified, because this is not honest.

The place was not very clean, which was surprising considering the $75 cleaning fee. There were fire ants in the kitchen. We have traveled to the Big Island four times and were never bit by fire ants until we stayed here. We used a lot of soapy water on the counters and that seemed to help, but they are not being controlled and yes, we did follow Linda's rules on emptying the trash and cleaning up.

There were no towels on arrival and if you read the reviews, this happens often. There was only a partial roll of toilet paper and no extras stocked, not good for a six day stay.

The smoke detectors were disconnected and there was wire hanging from the ceiling.

There were a number of other items that needed work, but I think I have said enough.

I know running an operation like this takes a lot of hard work and attention to detail and I hope Linda will improve these items, because the place could earn 5 stars from me with a little elbow grease.

Owner's Response: Sandy Hartwick mentions that host was very attentive and responded to messages my question is why was none of this brought up when I asked if everything was all ok and if you needed anything to be sure and let me know as I was not far away and would be there to address any concerns! We are in the process of redoing the large fishpond at present and have several other ponds on the property and am pleased to give garden tours and include sharing news regarding the ponds and fish. Guests were hardly around as I had stopped by several times to check with them. It is highly appreciated when guests return the Aloha and communicate there concerns while here! Always striving to keep clean and make Kuulei Hale a better place, just installed a new stove and upgraded the T.V. As explained upon checkin ants can be a problem anywhere if juice or food is left out on the counters to attract critters in! This is why we have basic house rules! I have checked and there are No ants in the home! I truly appreciate all the kind things said about me and Kuulei Hale..... Thank You Sandy

Nice setting - cottage needs work

  • 2 of 5

We stayed in the cottage for a week Linda was very nice but unfortunately we didn’t meet her until 4 days into our stay so had to figure out things on our own. We had been communicating via email, and since there is no wifi in the cottage – this was somewhat challenging.

The cottage is located in a lovely garden and is quiet & private. It does need a fair bit of work – the fridge/freezer door handles had broken off so the only way to open it was to pull on the top of the door, the dryer didn’t work – it was unplugged, we plugged it back in only to discover it didn’t work – an out of order sign would have been nice., Linda did offer to dry our clothes but as I mentioned earlier that was 4 days into our stay. We didn’t even try the dishwasher – the racks were rusty. There is a lot of ‘stuff’ in the cupboards & closets that really needs to be purged – clothes, expired food left by previous renters etc. and things that really should have been there – a salad bowl, plastic wrap, pepper - weren’t.

The cabinet door handles & other surfaces were greasy & dirty – I made the mistake of touching the top of the microwave and it was disgusting.

It smelled musty (probably the wall to wall carpet in a humid environment) and there were only wires hanging from the ceiling where smoke detectors should have been.

The towels were better suited to a car wash. I’m okay with assorted colours/sizes but these were stained & frayed – they were disgusting. The bed linens & chair upholstery all needed replacing as well.

Owner's Response: I really appreciate all of the kind things people say about Kuulei Hale being quiet and private! But it always amazes me when there is this heap of little things that seem to keep someone from appreciating all the special things that matter in life. The only valid thing here that I see is the dryer was starting to intermittently work so I unplugged it and had a new one on order which was not in stock in Hilo anywhere. The dryer is now replaced!

Perfect location and lovely home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

Linda was so accommodating to me and very flexible. I had everything I needed and the property was filled with fruit trees for the picking. I have family on the island and I feel so fortunate to know I have a place to return to to call home. I highly recommend Ku'ylei Hale!
