Place was easily accessible in a great location! Fully furnished with everything needed to cook all of our meals. We loved everything about this place. It was very enjoyable and we are very likely to rent again. Also, will be recommending to friends who may be visiting Chama
Wonderful getaway in Chama
We spent two nights in this wonderful property. It was spacious, clean, and comfortable. There were beautiful works of art as well as many antiques throughout the house. Communication with the owner and the check-in process both went very smoothly. This was my first time using vrbo and if this experience represents what one expects, I will be using it more in the future!
Fourth Time Is A Charm!
Every time we visit Chama, I have no doubt where I want to stay! Easy walking distance to the train station, Main St. shops, etc.
I LOVE THIS HOUSE! It is an updated historic home with all the amenities, comforts, and we have never found it wanting.
COVID-19 restrictions limited available restaurants in the area to take-out only. However, we had a fully stocked refrigerator and all the necessary equipment in the kitchen to make any kind of meal.
Thank you to Brian and Frances for making this a wonderful home away from home!
This property is a gem!
We have stayed at this property once before last summer and fell in love with it. We had to return for my father’s passing and prayed that this home would be available and it was. It provided such peaceful solace for me and my family when we most needed it. Thank you Brian and Francis for all of your help.
House is beautiful, cheerful, clean and accommodating.
Smooth and easy, he lol of mgr too.
Downtown location on the corner of 1st and Terrace (Rt. 17/Main St.)...Awaken to the sound of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad & see & smell the smoke as the train passes by while drinking coffee on the front porch. Only a 2-5 minute walk to the station, dining and shopping. A short hike, bike ride or drive to the Chama River with multiple access points. Sergent's Wildlife Refuge is only 1 mile down the road. Mountain/road biking, fishing, hunting, hiking, photography, horseback riding, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing all minutes away at Sergent's Wildlife Refuge 1 mile away.
Wild Horse Casino, Dulce, NM, is 30 minutes away (26 mi).
Georgia O'Keeffe's Ghost Ranch and museum is 50-60 minutes away.
Pagosa Springs, CO is 50 minutes away (48 miles of some of the most beautiful driving in the country!!). Enjoy the hot springs and the Wolf Creek ski resort, which gets some of the most snow in the lower 48!! A few GREAT breweries in town. Currently my favorite is Riff Raff, and Kips has some good tacos. Some good outdoor/mtn bike shops too! Both "Ski and Bow Rack" & "Mountain Country Sports" have treated me well. There is a small airport.
Durango, CO with the Durango Silverton Railroad, Mesa Verde National Park, and all outdoor activities with its own skiing/snowboarding mountain, is 2 hrs away (110mi), with an airport..
Taos and Santa Fe, known for their arts and mountain sports are 2 hrs away, and both with airports.
Albuquerque, 3 hrs away, has the closest International Airport (called the Sunport), plenty of casinos, a skytram, which is the longest in the country at 2.7 miles and lifts you into the Sandia Mountains to a height of 10,378 ft, a wildlife zoo and aquarium, as well as the Albuquerque Isotopes, a AAA affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Remember, where ever you drive to/from this house, you have a BEAUTIFUL drive.
Other Activities: Regardless of your destination or desired activity, Chama is ideal, with plenty to do within the town, and easy access to all the surrounding areas. You can enjoy ANY outdoor activity in Chama or in the surrounding areas. Although a 2 hr drive seems like a long time, the beautiful drives of redrock and mountain vistas, wildlife viewing, and overall tranquility make driving enjoyable and a memorable part of your vacation! The home has a convenient location in town, and Chama is central to Taos, Santa Fe, Dulce, Pagosa Springs, and Durango.!
Brian Mello (Owner)
About Brian Mello (Owner)
I was introduced to Chama, NM when I was working on the Navajo Reservation from 2002-2007. A colleague of mine bought a house in Chama and after I visited once, I fell in love with the area as it was a stark contract to the painted desert, but both provided a variety of outdoor activities in different environments. I bought the home in 2003 and began fixing it up in 2005, and did not finish until 2008, after I had already returned to Massachusetts, where I currently live.
Brian Mello (Owner) purchased this House in 2003
Why Brian Mello (Owner) chose Chama
This is one of the oldest homes remaining in Chama. It is a gambrel style victorian and was built in 1882. Records indicate that the builder of the home was a conductor of the D&RG railroad. There is more history related to this man and his family located in the home. The house has been completely remodeled, but strong effort was made to keep the details and charm accurate to the era. If you look closely during your stay, you will be able to spot some of the original features of the home.
What makes this House unique
The home is the last home on Terrace Ave/Main St in Chama, with views of the Cumbres Pass from all north windows and the decks. You can catch a glimpse of the train pass by in the morning, as the tracks are directly across the street, and the depot, dining and shopping are all a 4-6 minute walk from the home. There is driveway behind the home that can fit 2 vehicles, and plenty of additional parking behind the garage on Maple St. or along the side of the property on 1st St...enough to easily accommodate 30' trailers/motorhomes but is currently without hookups. It is easily accessible in the Winter, as all town roads are plowed by the state.
