Beautiful, family-friendly home in private wilderness setting

Bedrooms 5
Space 2,700 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

5+ bedroom, 3 bathroom down the road from Whiteface

The Brook View House is an ideal location to gather families or friends who want to visit the Adirondacks and Lake Placid region, take in the sights, experience nature at its best and then come home to a beautiful and comfortable house. It is spacious, with cathedral ceilings and large windows surrounding the open-plan living area, and yet incredibly cozy, especially with the heated floors and a roaring fire on a wintry night. With five main bedrooms and a sixth bonus room, the house can accommodate 12-14 guests.

The Brook View House is located in the town of Wilmington, just six miles from Whiteface Mountain Ski Area. It sits on the back corner of a wooded 5-acre property that backs up on 60,000 acres of public New York State Wild Forest lands. New Bridge Brook runs by the house year-round and offers beautiful views as well as the pleasant sounds of flowing water. There is plenty to explore in the woods behind the house, including a hiking/biking/skiing trail that you can access from the property and take for many miles to a pond and lean-to. Along with the wonderful wooded areas, there are also open grassy spaces for outdoor play, trails that wander around the property, an unheated two-car garage and a fire pit with seating for large groups. Smooth roads with light traffic beckon cyclists, extensive trails nearby serve mountain bikers and trail runners, and local swimming options abound.

** FOR WINTER GUESTS: We recommend an all-wheel drive vehicle to come up the driveway. We keep it plowed, but the winding uphill slope can be difficult in snowy conditions**

The main entry takes you into the open living/dining area, with soaring cathedral ceiling, large windows, couches and a flagstone wood-burning fireplace. It includes two rectangular tables and twelve chairs that can be arranged in a variety of ways to accommodate your group. The dining area opens onto a deck with a grill, two picnic tables for outdoor meals, and a view of the brook. The kitchen is large and well stocked with everything needed to prepare meals for a group. It has an island with a counter and four stools and a large pantry with plenty of space for all your food items, coolers, etc.

Down the hall on the main floor, you’ll find the bunkroom with two twin-sized bunkbeds, great for kids and adults alike, as well as another bedroom with a queen bed. There is a full bathroom, with shower and bathtub, and a separate laundry room with washer and drier for your use.

From the entryway, you can head upstairs to the library loft, which has a table and books, magazines, puzzles, and games to entertain your group after a long day of outdoor adventures or if the weather turns bad. This loft overlooks the living/dining room below, adding to the open feel of the main living area. Through the library loft, you enter the master suite, with high ceilings, large windows, a sitting area and a king-sized bed with memory-foam mattress. Grab a book or a cup of coffee, put your feet up and take in the sights and sounds of the brook below. The spacious master bath and its Jacuzzi tub look out at the Jay Mountain Wilderness beyond. Above the master bedroom is a lofted space that has been converted into a bouldering loft, where kids and adults can practice their climbing skills. Attached to the master suite is a small extra bedroom (the sixth) with a twin bunkbed, which works especially well for families with young children.

From the main floor kitchen, you can go downstairs to the ground level daylight basement, where you will find the movie room, with comfortable couches and a collection of VHS and DVD movies for family movie nights or just a quiet afternoon. There are also more games and a piano (not in perfect tune, but still quite functional.) Adjoining the movie room is the play room, which has a ping-pong table as well as a collection of toys for younger children. Just past the movie room, there are two bedrooms: one with a queen bed and one with a full bed. There is a bathroom with shower between the two. The ground level has its own outside entrance, as well as a mudroom area with closets to hold your skis and boots, hiking gear, or whatever other equipment you will bring for your trip.

In addition to the central fireplace, the house has in-floor radiant heat throughout for the cooler months, and five in-window air conditioning units for the warmer ones. There is Wi-Fi internet at the house, but instead of cable TV, we offer a DVD player and VCR, with a large collection of classic films to enjoy.

If you have young children in your group, please let us know, as we have a variety of items (high chair, booster seat, pack and play, etc.) that we are happy to provide for your use. The many toys, games, puzzles and books that you will find around the house will also help make younger guests feel at home.

About Hannah Morris

We purchased the Brook View House as a home for our family. Having spent many years vacationing in the area and created many special memories (getting married, doing triathlons, teaching kids to ski) just down the road, we knew we wanted to find our own place in the Adirondacks. We fell in love with this house for the adventures it affords outdoors and the comforts inside. We travel from Connecticut for weekends and longer vacations, but when we cannot use the house, we enjoy sharing it with others who want to experience the area. Brook View House (known as Wilmington Wilderness House by the former owners) has been a vacation rental for the past four years and earned five stars with over 40 reviews. We are very thankful for all the work the former owners and property managers have done in the past to make the house a wonderful place to stay while enjoying an area that offers so many activities and adventures. We are excited to welcome back guests who already know and love this place!

"We had a terrific week skiing and enjoying your home! The backyard was perfect for sledding and snowball wars. Downtown LP had tons to offer as well. Many thanks!"

Fantastic house in an ideal location. Has every amenity we could ever want...close to trails, mountain views, outdoor fire pit for smores and sunset cocktails, ping pong table, puzzles, games, wood burning fireplace, 3 floors of space so everyone could spread out...even a rock climbing wall. The list goes on and on. Just a great house in a great location. Thanks Hannah and Will!

Great family friendly home on a private lot with many great adventures.

  • 5 of 5

This house is absolutely stunning. Well maintained and fully equipped with everything you may need or even want. Lots of indoor activities and outdoor adventures as well. Great location. Hannah was absolutely a joy to talk with and went out of her way on many occasions to make sure we had everything we needed to make us feel at home. She gave great suggestions about activities in the area for us to do with our kids. The kids really enjoyed the rock wall in the loft. We had many game nights and a few movie nights after relaxing by the fire in the evenings. Highly recommend this rental and look forward to staying there again in the future.

This house exceeded my expectations! I planned for a girls weekend and everybody could not stop talking about how perfect the property was, or how organized and beautiful the house is. The privacy was a plus. We all had a great weekend that we will never forget!! Thank you, thank you Hannah and Will for everything and we will be back again!

Winter Wonderland in January

  • 5 of 5

Brookview House is a wonderful place to stay. Totally ready for us when we arrived....spotless, a fantastic kitchen stocked with anything you might need. We tried to think of something the owners had forgotten and could not come up with anything. They even opened up their own cupboards and invited us to use spices, oils, vinegars, etc. The setting is beautiful with a woodland/mountain view from every window. Lovely feeling of space thru out the house. Well stocked video library, puzzles, books, games and table tennis for a rainy or lazy indoor day. A 7 min drive to "The Face", 25 min to Van Hovenburg and Cascade XCountry and about 15 min to Lake Placid and a one minute walk out the back door to snowshoe/hike the trail beside the brook. Be sure to visit the Olympic Museum in town at the skating rink. On a rainy day we traveled to Ausable Forks and to Keene where we visited the Dart Brook stores....Ralph Lauren, Adirondack style! A beautiful drive. Restaurants abound but our favorite was just minutes away: "The Hungry Trout" has 2 levels. Upstairs is more fine dining with a wooded view (lit up at night) and downstairs is a sports type bar with both a tavern menu and the upstairs menu.

We highly recommend staying at the Brookview House. The owners were great to work with and responded to any question we had.
