Property type studio

About the property

Starry skies and moss- draped ancient live oaks! Our charming and comfortable bunk house studio / mother-in-law suite is fully equipped, sleeps two with a daybed with pop up twin bed. Well-equipped kitchenette includes medium-size frig, microwave and countertop cooking appliances. Wi-Fi, AC, full bathroom with shower.

Property is located in an equine community and features 5.37 acres of oak hammocks and former ranchlands, fenced and gated with 2, 12x12 stalls with fans, paddock and round pen available. Stall rent is $25 per stall, per night.

We are located 22 miles from the powder-sugar beaches of Sarasota, 18 miles from Arcadia, and 1.5 miles from the north gate to Myakka River State Park, featuring 18 miles of scenic riding trails, hiking trails, canopy walk and board walks.

This area, with the protected parks and reserves, is a birder's paradise, too. Add the endangered crested caracara to your life list. Bald eagles, wood storks, roseate spoonbills and many other species are found here among the more common egrets, herons, vultures, and other charismatic avians!

This quiet, secluded property offers the perfect opportunity for weary travelers to kick back and relax for a few nights or more. Plenty of grassy parking for vehicles and trailers.

The studio is rustic, a former beekeeping workshop and art studio, with high ceiling and exposed beams, metal roof. We offer it now to birders, travelers and wildlife enthusiasts with a desire to experience historic Old Myakka, our abundant wildlife and beautiful native habitats.

Why Gayle Reynolds chose Myakka City

Whether you're an avid birder and nature lover or kayaker, this is the place to experience old Florida at it's finest. While a robust wildlife corridor connects Mossy Hammock to Myakka State Park, we are partially surrounded by preserved land to the North West as well. The Crowley Preserve, 3 miles away showcases our history and culture and the Celery Fields is frequented by over 200 species of birds.

Great pied-a-terre in midst of Florida wildlife, equestrian paradise

  • 5 of 5

We arrived with our two-horses in their trailer late, in the dark, but Gayle, the owner, met us, helped us park, and showed our two quarter horses to their pasturage. With that settled, we decamped into the studio for a few well-deserved moments of rest after a day's drive.

The apartment itself is very pleasant, with elements of old Florida (it's attached to the barn, after all!) amidst more contemporary facilities. There is a very workable kitchenette with toaster oven, hotplates, microwave, coffee maker, many staples and condiments, and a full array of utensils and place settings. We especially enjoyed having a full refrigerator. Over the week we were there, we made several meals, and also enjoyed the local cuisine, which is varied and excellent, mostly concentrated in nearby Sarasota and Bradenton.

Armed with bird books and binoculars, we rode the 15 miles of trails in Myakka River State Park, which abuts this property and lends it that wild feeling. We had never seen so many species of wildlife, including no less than four endangered, extremely rare species of birds. A bald eagle swooped overhead one day, and landed in the pasture by the pond! We also saw several Crested Caracaras, large, beautiful birds that, we read, there are fewer than 100 left in the wild.

We unhitched the trailer, left the horses in pasture with the owner's two saddlebreds, and went to the beach on Siesta Key, a few years ago ranked America's Best Beach. We had no idea what a cultural mecca Sarasota is, with a world class art museum on the bay, ballet, and several theater groups, including Asolo Repertory, where Broadway shows are rehearsed in public before heading north to New York.

No matter how near or far we ranged, with or without our horses, the studio was a welcoming and comfortable oasis for rest and relaxation, and for planning the next day's adventure.

Even if it's not directly on your planned route, and whether you travel with your four-legged friends or not, we recommend this listing without reservation.
