COZY HASTINGS MESA HOUSE WITH STUNNING MOUNTAIN VIEW BETWEEN RIDGWAY & TELLURIDE
Enjoy a spectacular view of the San Juan Mountain Range (including Sneffles) from every south-facing room in our one bedroom/one bath modern ranch-style house. An office has been converted to add two single beds.
Two large sheltered patios one with a wrought iron outdoor table and six chairs for enjoying the view, the other has a propane grill.
- Telluride Festivals are at the end of this information.
The house is centrally located for easy access to Last Dollar Road – and approximately halfway between Ouray/Ridgway and Telluride. 16 mile drive to Ridgway 23 mile drive to Telluride. 40 mile drive to Montrose 26 mile drive to Ouray ...........40 miles to both Montrose Airport and Telluride airport.
The open living space is 1500 sq. ft. and includes living room, dining room, fully equipped kitchen with lots of spices, and a large dining table in front of a large window that highlights the view. Electric home with in-floor heat, and washer/dryer. There is an electric fan and a heater - if ever needed.
This is a perfect home for couples, retirees, and adventurers. If you are looking to get away from it all, this is a good place for you. You will find dark night skies , bright stars, fresh air, and the quiet sounds of nature. Remember the milky way - it is so beautiful from the patio at night.
Please read the reviews. Many will describe the breathtaking view of this place when you drive into the open meadow from the woods for the first time. The road dead ends in a circular driveway at our home, so it is quiet and isolated. If you look for them, you can see one house beyond the trees to the east and another beyond another group of trees to the southeast. Both of the neighbors have worked to site their homes so that ALL of us have a wonderful view of the mountains and the forests. There is very little traffic and it is a quiet and peaceful experience.
No stairs, so this is a lovely home for someone who needs to use a cane or a walker. I do not believe a wheelchair could get through the bathroom door -- which is the only reason I don't advertise it as a handicapped home.
The 35 acre property is a mixture of Aspen and Ponderosa pine trees, with the house sited on an 5 acre open meadow that allows a wide view of the San Juan mountain range. It is amazing to walk through the trees, or just sit on the patio and enjoy the view.
You can enjoy the fall colors from the patio, or the beautiful green of the aspen and Ponderosa in the spring and summer. Wild flowers are plentiful at different times of the spring and summer.
It is at a high altitude. Close to 9,000 ft. You will want to drink a lot of water to stay hydrated, and some people recommend taking a couple of aspirin at night.
On a clear night, you will see the Milky Way, and an abundance of stars and satellites from the patio. We have seen falling stars and once saw the Space Shuttle docking with the Space Station.
Just walking around the roads in the immediate area is beautiful, and you can bike, walk, or cross-country ski from the patio of the house. There is access to so many National Forest hiking trails just a short drive away. And a lot of books to help you find jeep & hiking trails, and bird, mushroom and animal identification books.
I believe that most people who have stayed at our home have seen a variety of wildlife including elk, deer, coyotes, chipmunks, wild turkeys, foxes and many beautiful birds will fly into the landscape.
There is NO HUNTING allowed on this property.
It is approximately a 2 mile walk to where the first True Grit movie was filmed. The Famous Last Dollar Ranch is close by, and our house is truly convenient to many of the highlights of Southwest Colorado such as jeeping, hot springs, Mesa Verde (a day trip), and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison to name a few.
Ridgway has just recently been placed on the Certified IDA International Dark Sky Communities list. Only 28 communities in the world are on this list, and both Ridgway and Norwood, CO are on the list. Our house is half way between these two towns -- so, I think that means that people can see more stars than most places in the world from the patio (unless it is cloudy). Email is: darksky.org/ridgway - for more information.

We had an amazing experience! Kitchen was well equipped with what we needed, enjoyed the beautiful views early morning and stargazing at night! Felt incredible peace and comfort in this home!
We had a wonderful trip staying here. The view from the porch and windows was absolutely stunning and made every morning special. The home was clean, comfortable, and well equipped, making it easy to relax and enjoy our time together. We made great family memories here. The host was responsive and the process from booking to check-out was smooth and simple. We would happily stay again.
Sarah's property was perfect for our stay with friends in southern Colorado. The property was very clean with an amazing view of the mountains. Would definitely look to stay here in the future.
The house was great for our family. It was very clean and has everything you need for an extended stay. It has awesome views of the mountains and we saw wildlife every morning.
The surroundings are beautiful and the kitchen in particular is stocked with everything you could need. We were going to a mushroom festival in Telluride and this was a great location to come back to and decompress.
Such a beautiful property, the views are outstanding! The fall colors, the stars, morning coffee on the patio…it was perfect. Sarah was wonderful and the home is lovely, has everything you need!
Such a nice place to stay with an amazing view and a comfortable home. The owners are friendly and provided information about the area and fun things to do during our stay. We would definitely recommend this home!
This was the perfect base for our hiking trip to the area. Very comfortable, well equipped and the views were amazing. Sarah was the perfect host, answering all my questions and giving me some great insight for hiking. We’re looking forward to making a return trip!
This is a wonderfully secluded location and the view itself…..spectacular. The accommodations were just right. They have everything you need. We will book this property again.
Gorgeous view for outdoor dining. House is lovely and comfortable. House is well stocked. Don and Sandy are a delight. Perfect place to relax after hiking.
The pictures do not do the property justice. It is absolutely gorgeous. We were only able to stay one night but the house had everything we could possibly need.
This is one of the best places we have ever stayed. It had everything we needed to cook meals and enjoy the fabulous view from the back patio and from every window. We enjoyed 4 wheeling and hiking in the area but the best part was watching the aspens changing. Sarah and Don are really easy to communicate with. We look forward to staying here again!
We stayed at the Center property for 3 nights. The purpose of our trip was to see the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival.
The property was amazing. The views were fantastic! We saw deer and elk. We also enjoyed the solitude and the Milky Way amongst the millions of stars at night.
Would definitely stay here again.
This home sits on a grassy Mesa at the base of the beautiful Sneffles range in the rugged southwestern corner of the Colorado mountains. It is quiet, bright, efficient, and well-stocked with everything we needed. We found it to be a perfect home for an active couple wanting to get away from the stresses of everyday life.
Want to publicly thank Sarah for letting us stay at her home. We had a great time! Had everything we needed for our stay. Nice big windows to see the nice views of sunset and bright mornings. Our little one enjoyed all that patio space! We didn't get to see any deer or elk (sad) but we still enjoyed our stay. Sarah is an amazing host!
The views from this place is unreal! Definitely make sure you make time to just hangout there and enjoy the view. Its so quiet too! We loved reading on the porch. The place was so clean and stocked with all we needed. The beds were comfortable too! Great wifi connection too. We definitely want to return!
We spent a week here reconnecting with nature. Amazing place for solitude and peace. Don was a treat and a welcoming face when we arrived. The home had everything we needed and we left refreshed and ready to jump back in. Thanks to the Center family for sharing this space with us. We are so lucky to have found them.
This property is the perfect place to get away, relax, and enjoy the beautiful mountain views. We love sitting on the porch, feeling the breeze, and enjoying the beautiful landscape. It is fun to walk around the property among the aspen trees too. The kitchen. bedrooms, bathroom, and laundry areas have everything you need for your stay. This is our second visit and we hope to return again.
Could not have asked for a better place to stay.
The house was very inviting, clean, and well appointed. We didn’t need a thing.
The views….words and photos aren’t enough to describe one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen.
Lots of unobstructed views of prairie and mountains. Views of mule deer and elk nearly every day.
Extremely enjoyable stay…didn’t want to leave.
Lovely home with incredible view of the mountains. We saw several animals nearby. We loved sitting on the patio. The home was very well stocked for cooking. They drive to the home is beautiful as well. Hosts were very friendly and helpful. To get to the room with twin beds, you walk through the other bedroom. Convenient location for visiting Telluride, Ridgway and Ouray. Our only disappointment was that we didn’t book it for longer. We would love to return!!
The view is stellar and pictures do not do it justice. We loved the snow capped mountains during the day and the stars at night.
Aside from the views the house is extremely well stocked. There wasn't a thing we wanted for from super sharp, high quality knives (so rare in VRBOs) to a bountiful spice rack.
Sarah was super helpful and accommodating. The house is remote but that made it so special and we just factored a drive into our plans.
We loved the peace, quiet and all the wildlife. Thanks for sharing this great home.
Sarah is an amazingly personable host! It makes a difference when you get this kind of personal care and communication. Don and Sandy greeted us when we arrived. They were so very kind. And the place was immaculate. This property is very open and roomy for its sq footage. The view from all of the south windows was breathtaking! We enjoyed watching the deer and elk come through each morning and evening. It had everything we needed and Sarah’s book provided so much information, including hand drawn maps and drawings of the beautiful wild flowers. Lots of books, guides, maps to make sure guests see and do everything they want to in this area. We hope to visit this property again for fall colors sometime soon.
My husband and I spent a wonderful week at Sarah’s absolutely adorable place. The house itself is beautifully designed and perfect for two people, no matter where it might be. But the setting makes it incomparable, with views of the Sneffels Range that you could watch change all day long (and we did!). The location is beautiful and remote, with an array of wildlife to watch during the day and myriad stars to gaze at night, but also quite convenient to Ridgway, Telluride and all the attractions of the San Juans. And I have never seen a better equipped kitchen in a rental property! In fact, every time we turned around, the thing we thought we could use - binoculars to watch the deer, a wine chiller for the patio table, or the right spice for dinner - was miraculously at hand! And finally, Don and Sandy we’re perfect caretakers on site - friendly and helpful when needed, but never in the way. Truly a perfect stay!

Hi Brian and Austin
I'm so happy to hear that you had a wonderful time at my home. Don and Sandy and I try hard to make sure you have a great stay. It's always wonderful to hear that the wildlife come out while people are there.
Thank you so much for such a lovely review.

About the host
Hosted by Ken Center
While visiting for one of the festivals, my parents Dennis and Sarah wandered through many pieces of property looking for just the right view with a local realtor. As they were leaving the area, they stopped to let the realtor know to call if anything came up on Last Dollar Road. Amazingly something had just come in that morning. When they walked through the woods on this property they were presented with an amazing natural opening in the trees with a magical view of the San Juan mountain range. They knew instantly that they had found their retirement property.
Our family built a small cabin in 1993, and a mountain house in 2004. My parents are no longer with us. I am now managing the property, spending time there several times throughout the year. I love being able to share the beauty of this view with other people.
Why they chose this property
There are 35 acres to walk around in. The open area where the house is located allows for a wonderful view. The neighbors say we have the best view in the area because of the artistic framing of the trees all around the building, and the wide view to the south. Honestly, we just fell in love. Almost everyone gets to see wildlife while they are visiting, which is always a treat.
What makes this property unique
One level house is great for couples and retirees (also great for people with disabilities that use a cane, or a walker). It is an open plan and you can see the mountains from large windows in each room. The master bedroom has a king sized bed. Additionally there are two twin beds in the back room. The property is located centrally to the four towns in the area: Ridgway, Ouray, Telluride and Montrose. Each of these towns has their own charm and attractions.
