Livermore is the gateway to the San Joaquin Valley
Livermore sits on the cusp of the San Joaquin Valley, spreading out between the hills that separate the San Francisco Bay from the vast agricultural plains of middle California. The result is an intriguing place that's part city and part backcountry. Head one way and you'll be flitting between bohemian beer bars and the famous tech firms of Silicone Valley. Head the other and you'll be tasting wines in the iconic Wente Vineyards, or wandering almond farms that stretch out as far as the eye can see. Livermore vacation rentals sit right in the middle of the lot.
There are wineries galore in Livermore
By some estimations there are as many as 40 wineries in the Livermore area alone. They range from the uber-famous Wente Vineyard – a registered state landmark and one of the oldest family wineries in America – to the centuries-old Concannon Vineyard, both of which are worth a visit. It's also true that most Livermore vacation rentals have prime access to the beautiful Del Valle Regional Park, where kayaking courses and swimming spots give way to the Eagle Crest Trail and other famous walking routes on the edge of San Joaquin.
Entering the Central Valley in Livermore
Livermore occupies a unique place where the rugged hills and mountains that enfold California's huge Central Valley finally stoop low to offer access to the Pacific Coast and the San Francisco Bay Area. The result is a town enfolded by undulating hills and blankets of vineyards, and one with oodles of great outdoors opportunities. Canyons drop through the ridges of the Ohlone Regional Wilderness to the south, boaters explore the lake waters of Del Valle, and a whopping 87,000 acres of protected landscape exists just a little further afield, where the Henry W. Coe State Park hides mountain lions and elks.
