"Heavenly Days" Cottage, overlooking Somes Sound, was featured on "Around the World in 80 Homes" on The Fine Living Channel in October, 2004. It was built in 1895 and completely renovated in 1995 with special attention to restoring all its original details, including woodwork, hardwood floors, turn of the century slate sink, clapboard and shingled siding, etc.

The cottage is located on Mount Desert Island, in the town of Mount Desert and the village of Hall Quarry. The cottage was the guest cottage to the home of Cyrus Hall of Hall Quarry, who owned most of the quarries in the area and is who the village is named for. Beautiful granite was mined in the quarries of Hall Quarry and shipped from Somes Sound to destinations all over the world.

The cottage is decorated with beautiful yet durable antiques from approximately the 1870's to 1950's. Comfortable and casual, it's like taking a step back in time to yesteryear in coastal Downeast Maine! On the first floor, you'll find the kitchen with various collections of antique kitchenware, an antique hoosier, butcher-block countertop as well as all the modern comforts of home (dishwasher, electric stove and refrigerator, coffee maker and microwave).

The dining room provides seating for 6-8 and the living room offers great views of the Sound. The second floor offers 3 bedrooms with 1 queen and 2 double beds. The private deck off the master bedroom boast panoramic views of Somes Sound and the surrounding mountains. Or, sit in the hot tub on the covered porch (off the living room) and watch the sailboats and lobster boats float by. You may even see lobstermen hauling traps right in front of the cottage while you drink your morning coffee.

With sloping lawn to the water's edge, the cottage is situated approximately 250ft from the shore of beautiful Somes Sound, the only natural fjord on the east coast. Extensive granite stonework, including a patio, rock walls, granite steps and pathways, complement the dramatic changes in landscape from mountain to ocean. Located on the "quiet side" of Mount Desert Island, the cottage is still within minutes of all that the island has to offer.

Spend your days exploring Mount Desert Island's many villages including Bar Harbor and world-famous Acadia National Park. Opportunities for whale watching, boat rentals and charters, fishing, swimming, tennis, shopping, kayaking, hiking and many more are within minutes. Walk, drive or take Mt. Desert Island's new bus, the "Island Explorer", available to the public free of charge! Destinations include just about anywhere you want to go on the island.

In the fall, enjoy Maine's spectacular foliage. From the porch, look across Somes Sound for breathtaking views of the mountains of Acadia National Park. Or, hop in the car for a quick drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain for a bird's eye view of Bar Harbor and surrounding villages. Come and enjoy!!

Wonderful location and access to Acadia Nat'l Park

Guest: Family w/3 and 5 year old children from Maryland (-)
Date of Stay: 06/11/11 Review Submitted: 11/29/11

Taken from cottage "How Was Your Vacation?" feedback sheet: "We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Maine and stay at your cottage. Wonderful location and access to Acadia National Park. We found the cottage clean, well-stocked kitchen tools and plenty of towels. Hot tub and fire pit were both well used by all! Lovely to find such a clean rental cottage in a house of this age. Had just about everything we needed, even on a rainy day. Would be happy to recommend this rental cottage and send you some digital pictures. Thank you also for taking the time to email us places to go, etc.

We loved everything about the place

Guest: Phyllis and David (-)
Date of Stay: 08/27/11 Review Submitted: 09/19/11

Hi David and Becky, Thanks very much for your note. We had a wonderful time at the cottage and in Acadia. We loved everything about the place -- the view, the deck, the hot tub, the well-equipped kitchen, the furnishings, etc. If we return to Acadia, I'll definitely be in touch with you. I tried to submit a review, but I'd rather not sign up with a website, so I'll leave it at this. Thanks again and hopefully we'll see you again soon! Best, Phyllis

Away from it All

Guest: silent7 (New Jersey)
Date of Stay: 09/11/10 Review Submitted: 10/06/10

I found this place after an exhaustive internet search looking for someplace special to stay for our 35th wedding anniversary and we were not disappointed. This is a wonderful cottage located on the back side of Mount Desert Island with a great view of Somes sound, away from the tourist attractions of Bar Harbor but still within a short drive if you want to shop there. The house is loaded with antiques, is warm and cozy, and has almost everything you will need for a great get away. The cottage is kept spotlessly clean and there is a hot tub on the porch that was great after a long day hiking the mountains. There is also a outdoor gas grill for cooking and a fire pit, with wood provided if you wish to sit around the fire in the evenings. A DSL internet connection and Dish TV are provided if you have the need to stay in touch with the world. Located in the dinning room are brochures to just about everywhere you would want to go in the area. Also of interest is a log book where you can detail your stay and provide tips to other travelers. You will be visited daily by the local family of whitetail deer and every evening we saw a red fox returning home with dinner. You can not go wrong renting this place if you are looking to get away, enjoy some peaceful quiet time and still be in the heart of Acadia. A very unique experience and highly recommended.

One of a Kind Cottage in a quiet secluded location

Guest: silent7 (New Jersey)
Date of Stay: 09/11/10 Review Submitted: 10/03/10

This is just one great place to get away. On the back side of Mount Desert Island away from the tourist crowds. The house is in a wonderful peaceful setting. Very quiet with lots of local wildlife visiting on a daily basis. The house is kept spotlessly clean with a great view of Somes sound. Everywhere you look there are antiques and the original wood work is beautiful. Most everything you will need is provided. There are brochures to all local attractions and a log book for you to record your experience if you are so inclined. I personally found the book enlightening. Lots of hints on what to do and where to go from previous guests and even some funny stories. Even though you are fairly secluded there is Dish TV and a DSL internet connection to stay in touch with the outside world if you are so inclined. We preferred to sit on the porch and just take in the quiet and watch the boats cruising the sound. There is also an outside fire pit with wood provided if you want to get in some time around the fire in the evening. The hot tub on the porch was a great addition to get in a good soak after the day of activities. The people managing this property were very friendly and we even met the owner who stopped by to check on the hot tub. He provided us with some great information about the house which is way over 100 years old. You instantly feel at home and relaxed in this place. If you are looking to stay in a cottage and get away from the hotel experience this is the place for one unique experience. Highly recommended.

We love the house! It brings back many memories for me at my grandma's house. The weather was perfect and we were very happy with so many things to do so close. The blueberries [from the bush on the side of the cottage] everyday was an added bonus.

This is a wonderful property set in a gorgeous part of Acadia. My husband and I took our ten-month old baby here for a week in May and we had a lovely, quiet time. The house is an endearing beach cottage, filled with antiques. It has a wraparound porch with great views of the sound and a hot-tub. Best of all, it feels remote -- it is nestled in a lovely spot with lovely views, far from all the tacky tourist stuff that has sprouted up near Bar Harbor. The owners are terrific - they were very accomodating and responsive to all our requests (e.g., high-chair, playpen for the baby). They even sent me some items that we absent-mindedly left behind. We are planning to come again.

A magical place

Guest: Cee Jane (Arlington, MA, USA)
Date of Stay: 09/12/08 Review Submitted: 05/09/09

We found this rental over 10 years ago and have been coming ever since. It is a perfect get away for couples, families, anyone who loves the out-of-doors. Near hiking, biking, swimming and more. It is very convenient to Southwest Harbor village, Bar Harbor, and of course Acadia. The house is wonderful. Rustic and comfortable, it has a great history and a breathtaking view. The loons, deer, and birds are always showing up to amuse us. The owners, the Ashmore's, are great folks and are always available. It is our favorite place to go -- quiet, beautiful, magical -- with plenty of things to do, places to explore, and time for R and R.
