  • A Gorgeous Property and Fantastic Experience!

"The Down East Cottage is an absolutely lovely home and exceeded our expectations in every way for our family vacation in Maine...the setting is more breathtaking than the photos capture! The cottage is pristine and is the perfect location to access MDI/Acadia and we also had a fantastic experience right around the corner at Lamoine beach finding starfish, quahog and razor clams, eels, and more...our kids had a blast! We enjoyed making s'mores and sitting by the fire pit, playing family games, listening to records, and watching movies after long, action-packed excursions in Acadia, Bar Harbor and beyond. Other favorites included discovering the Bar Harbor Farmer's Market on Sunday morning, popovers and hiking at Jordan Pond, Bass Harbor Lighthouse/Trail, Thurston's Lobster Pound (wow!), shopping in Southwest Harbor, and Echo Lake/Cadillac Mountain adventures. We created countless memories at this lovely home in Maine. Shirley and George are extremely responsive owners, easy to communicate with, and extremely thoughtful as they even had a welcome gift to greet us when we arrived. I would highly recommend this property for anyone wanting to experience everything Bar Harbor/Acadia has to offer, while simultaneously enjoying the privacy and solace of a secluded, beautiful waterfront property."

  • It was ‘Maine-ly’ about being together…and celebrating. We are grateful for the time and experience!

"It didn’t take us long to decide on a destination, Acadia National Park rose to the top of the list almost immediately. From all of our reading and research, it seemed to offer so many hiking and exploring opportunities and (even though it would take a while) some of us could drive. Finally, we would have a long-awaited vacation with our grown children—and we had a lot to celebrate. For this momentous occasion, we wanted a truly special place to stay…Devilstone Carriage/Guesthouse offered that! The VRBO description items that caught our attention instantly were “3 king-size beds, 4 baths, and short walk to town”—we would all have a commodious space and we could walk when we wanted to dine out. Although it sounded quite inviting, since we had never been to Bar Harbor we did not fully appreciate the “Shorepath seating”…we do now! Although one of us bicycled at times, we did need a car to travel the short distance to Acadia each day. (The free Island Explorer bus had not started running yet for the season.) However, we did not need all the stuff we packed (we hadn’t been on a ‘road trip’ in a while) because our home for the week was as “beautifully furnished and fully equipped” as described. We did not have the pleasure of meeting John, the owner, in person—but at every turn we felt his kind and gracious care. Before our visit he was patient and helpful as we pinned down many details. From the moment we stepped into his home—heard the melodious music and found the delicious food items he provided to get us started—we felt greeted and welcome. Through many strategically placed notes, John seemed to anticipate our questions. The written information and suggestions added to our ease and comfort. We also appreciated and took advantage of his restaurant recommendations—and agree they are great! In closing, we will offer this—in case the words “very private” didn’t pop out when you read the description. All around us there were things to do and see. We packed a lot of exhausting, exhilarating activity into each day as we visited Acadia National Park and in the evening the town of Bar Harbor is bustling with its many restaurants and shops. Still…in the morning when we would wake to the song sparrow or walk a few steps to sip our coffee and see the sunrise from the Shorepath…or in the evening when the noises of town would fall away with each step of our short walk towards ‘home’ we truly experienced the private, secluded peace of the place. Our trip was indeed a JOY!"

  • Great place with amazing location!

"We stayed here with our two young children for a week while exploring Acadia and Bar Harbor for the first time. The cottage is beautifully decorated, clean, and very comfortable -- perfect for either a family or a couple looking for a get-away. The small garden and balcony are also very charming, and the neighbors are friendly (as are the owners). But most importantly, the location cannot be beat. Even with young children, we walked into town several times a day. Wonderful restaurants are close by (as are the farmer's market, playgrounds, etc.). The location is also a great base for exploring Acadia. We definitely plan to stay here again!"

  • Best vacation spot

"What a find. My wife and I took our adult daughters and husband and boyfriend to Bar Harbor. The views from our home away from home was spectacular. The home is spacious and tastefully decorated. We really enjoyed the wrap-around deck. We use the grill several nights and the gas outdoor fire pit was awesome. The owner, Bonnie, was a gem. We had a slight problem the first night and she had it fixed immediately. My car broke down and she set me up with her mechanic who was terrific. Our youngest and boyfriend hiked over 30 miles of Acadia National Park. The bus system is super. The Light House Boat tour is worth the money and time. Our favorite things Gaylin's restaurant for nice lobster dinners Side Street Cafe for great lobster rolls and lobster stew Beerworks for duh! Beers by Maine craft breweries Maine-ly Meats. Great BBQ And CJ's for the best blueberry pie ala mode or blueberry soft serve (we did this about every night) In short don't pass up this destination and lovely home"
