5 nights in the wilderness in a canvas yurt!

Guest: Anonymous
Date of Stay: 10/02/11 Review Submitted: 10/12/11

We spent 5 nights at the Sundog camp on Bear Creek Lake in a yurt. The photos did not do the property justice. The pavilion is a first class amenity with upscale finishes and is very well stocked. Everything from the wine glasses to the Golden Rabbit ceramic plateware added an unexplected pleasure to our meals! The bathrooms were beautifully finished in slate and boasted the finest towels! We ate our breakfasts in front of the stacked stone fireplace and had our evening hot chocolate by the fire pit as we gaped at the unadulterated starry sky. The yurt was very well furnished with a dreamy marshmellow type mattress and really plush pillows. We enjoyed the flat screen TV with satellite and DVD player. We docked our small Seadoo on the sandy beach below the yurt and had many fine adventure on Bear Creek Lake...one of the most pristine and remote lakes we have explored. We saw a bald eagle on one of our outings...the river cliffs rise so steeply out of the water and are often the site of diving raptors. Sols Creek Waterfall can be seen from the lake and a wonderful island is a great place to camp out for swims. We had endeavored to find Flat Creek Falls over the years but were unable to locate it from the hike at the end of Rock School Bridge. This time we docked the boat and walked the road behind the houses at Sugar Cove (we were welcomed here by a local owner), through Flat Creek and then up the fisherman's trail to the awesome many tiered waterfall. We also spent a day in the Bonas Defeat river gorge where we hopped from bus size boulders, through caves and the river to see the most amazing rock formations carved over millions of years by the rushing Tuckasegee River. Nearby is the amazing Paradise Falls and a back way into Panthertown through the Rock Bridge School road off Hwy 281. After a nice meal at Lulu's in Sylva, we drove to the Blue Ridge parkway to hike on Balsam Mountain Road and were thrilled by the family of elk that sauntered by our car during feeding time. There is a wonderful road trip on the Blue Ridge toward Asheville where you turn south on Hwy 215 for awesome views and then make a left onto to Charley's Creek taking in the serene views of Balsam Lake on the way back to 281 and our wilderness paradise at Sundog Camp. Most of all we were loath to leave the privacy and silence of our lakeside retreat! We can't say enough about how accomodating the Sundog staff (especially Mark!) were...we will definitely be back!

We've made a vacation at the yurts an anual tradition. What a great place to get away from the heat and the rush of everyday life. We'll definitely be back next year.

We stayed in the big yurt in September of 2010 and was extremely pleased with everything. This place definitely gives new meaning to glamping. Everything that we could have possibly needed was there. We will definitely be back many times and will tell our friends how wonderful this place is. See you soon

A Unique and Wonderful Experience, Great Service

Guest: Jay (Atlanta)
Date of Stay: 08/01/10 Review Submitted: 08/06/10

My wife and three boys stayed in the Bears Den yurt for 2 nights and enjoyed a truly unique family get away. We love to camp and this was indeed "glamping" as our wonderful host Brandi referred to it (glamour + camping) The Yurt itself was very comfortable and well appointed and had plenty of room. Nice deck overlooking the lake and wonderful chairs for star gazing at night. The pavillion area was awesome! Satelite tv for watching the ball games - go braves- well stocked and kitchen, very nice baths, Big Green Egg and gas grills for cooking, and a wonderful stone fireplace. We had a great time just hanging out playing cards in front of the fireplace. It really was like camping but with all the conveniences of home. Location on Bear Lake was convenient to great sightseeing along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Met some great guests at the pavillion area as well. The smaller yurt would be a great a nice romantic trip or couples could rent both yurts for a nice retreat. Wonderful service from SunDog staff - Caleb, Brandi and Sarah made sure we had everything we needed! Highly recommend SunDog Places and the Yurts for a unique and memorable trip.

Love the yurts!

Guest: Jim (Columbia area, South Carolina)
Date of Stay: 07/03/10 Review Submitted: 07/13/10

My wife, our Jack Russell and I enjoyed 2 very relaxing days in the smaller yurt during the July 4th weekend. The path to the nearby lake beaches were a bit steep, but clean and manageable. Morning temps were crisp, and the climate controls in the yurt were perfect. We found the pavillion, kitchen, and bathroom to be very comfortable and convenient. This is the most comfortable way to camp!
