Why the Owner Chose Huelo

We chose to move to Huelo because of it's pristine environment, with clean air, pure water wells, and quiet surroundings. The rivers that run through this area flow all year round and provide recreation and contemplation for the community. The tropical climate allows the cultivation of orchids which flourish in the trees, and exotic flowers and foliage, which has provided a livelihood for our family for many years.

The Unique Benefits at this House

Our family has always had an interest in surfing and we are situated between 2 of the best surfing spots on the Island. Miles of country lanes provide scenic hiking and jogging. Quiet, starlit nights and the whispering trade winds make for blissful sleep. Low EMF environment contributes to the tranquility of the surroundings. Clean air, well water and quiet are the essence of the visitor experience.

Owner's Map of Huelo

We hand built this home from the ground up when we were young, salvaging 50 year old Coos Bay fir to build the floors, windows and doors. All the interior doors are original as is the the hardware. We planted every tree on the property and effectively gentrified the jungle, creating a serene tropical paradise to relax in and enjoy. We enjoy being creative with everything we do and believe that our life is our art.

There are not words to describe our stay...but I'll try! Chris and Susan were most generous hosts, mahalo. Their gorgeous home was the perfect fit for our family of 6, and the location was superb. We feel as though we found, yet another wonderful secret corner in Maui, with the lush grounds at Windward Garden. The trek to the local pools was awesome. We can't get back soon enough!

All of the previous reviews sum up an experence with Susan and Chris at Windward Gardens perfectly. There is little more to add to perfection! I can not imagine a better experience of true Hawaii than our stay. We had a 2 night stay which is just not long enough. Susan and Chris are wonderful hosts and can give you wonderful ideas for your travel and dining anyplace on Maui. If we have the opportunity to visit Hawaii again Windward Gardens will be first on our list to visit again.

Our home away from home!

Guest: Gretel (Cypress, Texas)
Date of Stay: 07/20/10 Review Submitted: 07/30/10

My husband and I have been coming to Maui since 1985. This was our 8th trip and our children's second. We have seen many changes in the island but staying at Windward Garden for a week was by far the finest experience ever. The home and property put us back in time . A time of grace, calm, serenity and paradise. All the words Hawaii was known for. Susan and Chris are as much a part of this as the home they made from a jungle. My children 15 & 13 enjoyed every bit of it as much as we did. The walks to the beautiful ocean cliffs to swimming in fresh water pools. Thank you Chris for introducing my son and husband to Bocce. They intend to continue play here in Texas! The breakfast that Susan and Chris serve is beyond words. Fruit from the gardens to start,Hawaiian coffee, pancakes and eggs no need for lunch. My daughter took surfing lessons from Gus, their son and was surfing in no time, highly recommend him as an instructor. To sum it up we will be back again and again. I hope if you love Maui you get to experience Windward Garden you will not want to leave!!

Susan and Chris have created heaven on earth. They built this house with love and it shows. Beautiful porch for breakfast dining, lovely breezes off the ocean too soothe you, and the warmest family to welcome you. I (husband) travel worldwide for a living and I can honestly say there are very few places I would go back too just for the accommodations. But I would here, in a heartbeat. It's off the beaten path, quiet and as cozy and welcoming as can be. I can promise you will not be disappointed. We cannot recommend the house or the hosts enough. Randy & Jane T Texas

So Serene and Unforgettable that we extended our trip and flew on two more flights!

Guest: rbe_of_mt (hamilton, mt)
Date of Stay: 05/08/10 Review Submitted: 06/01/10

We chose Windward as a place to stay for a night on our way to Hana. However, once we got there we realized it was much more. It was instead our dream home away from home. We could not have imagined a better place to stay. This was the most serene, welcoming, comforting, and pleasing place we found in Hawaii. This was the reason we extended our stay. A week after our first night at the Windward we returned. We were supposed to be on a return flight to the mainland. We couldn't go back. Instead we changed our tickets, rented another car and flew on two more interisland flights. Simply so we could spend one more night at Windward Garden. This says more than words can. We had visited Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Maui once again. We wanted to end our trip with the serene, beautiful memories that Windward had created. The landscaping was breathtaking and unforgettable. Susan was so knowledgeable about every amazing plant, flower and tree. She had planted them all. The solar powered, off the grid house was built by hand by her and Chris. So spacious, airy and welcoming. Comfort. A house I could only dream of until we stayed there. Our room had an amazing ocean view tiled lanai. Many hours were spent on it in awe of where we were. The palm trees in the forefront of the view are etched in the memory. Short walks to the ocean side cliffs and jungle pools. Short drives to Paia, Haiku, and Hookipa and so much more. Amazing organic breakfasts with fruit from the site. Excellent coffee. And most importantly, the local knowledge and history we graciously received from Chris and Sue that we never could have found elsewhere. Very clean. Excellent Beds. Very accommodating. Quiet. No chickens echoing in your heads. Do not come here if you desire a concrete resort along a crowded beach. You will be disappointed. Instead, come here if you desire a welcoming home with two incredible people that will give you an unforgettable visit to Maui. For this we are eternally thankful. Chris and Susan are the most amazing hosts that we have ever experienced. And amazing people outside of this. Truly unforgettable. If only we had stayed longer... We only left because we had an anxious Jack Russell waiting for us in Montana. Next time, she will join us and we will have no excuse to leave what is now viewed as paradise. So much gratitude and thanks. ...counting the days until we return to Windward Garden. r&b, hamilton, montana

Paradise

Guest: JKLee (Tahoe)
Date of Stay: 04/05/10 Review Submitted: 05/24/10

I spent three weeks at Windward Gardens while I took a yoga teacher training. Windward Gardens is an exquisite bed and breakfast. The house has a beauty that grows on you. Inside it's full of original art and is immaculate; outside there are beautiful gardens and places to sit and read or drink coconut juice. I enjoyed eating bananas and papayas right from the yard. It is the kind of place that is both peaceful and full of life. Susan and Chris are full of insights into Maui from where to find nightlife and good food to how to get to local swimming holes. I loved sitting on my bedroom deck and staring at the ocean. I could have stayed forever.

A little piece of heaven on earth

Date of Stay: 05/03/10 Review Submitted: 05/03/10

Our family has had the pleasure of several visits to this incredible b and b. We enjoyed amazing hospitality from the owners. The food was incredible...don't forget to ask the host to prepare one of his famous breakfasts..the setting is fantastic...made us feel as if we were 'on safari'! We swam in the pools that were a short hike from the house, and felt truly as if were back in the ancient times of Hawaii. The fresh water, clean air and trade winds renewed us! The spirit of 'aloha' stays with us to this day,and makes us want to return again and again.
