The first thing to know about this apartment is that it is located within strolling distances of so many wonderful bakeries! Oh yes, and landmarks too - Notre Dame, the Pantheon, Luxembourg Gardens, Jardin des Plates, the Sorbonne, the Seine, Boulevard St. Germain, etc. are all just minutes away - yet the apartment is so peaceful and airy, looking over trees and green gardens to the spires of Notre Dame (and Sacre Coeur - off in the distance on the hill of Montmartre). Even in the kitchen you have a big window to look out while you wait for your coffee to brew. It is on the top floor of a 4 floor walk up (it`s a typical old Latin Quarter building) but as soon as you walk through the door you are in your own Paris world. No feet pounding over your head at midnight! As the building is situated in a courtyard behind the street building, one hears almost no traffic/restaurant noise. But when you head out, you will find yourself in the beating heart of old Paris. Rue Mouffetard, the oldest street market in France is close by. Hemingway, James Joyce, George Orwell - all lived in this corner of the Latin Quarter and Woody Allen`s 'Midnight in Paris' was filmed just up the road. If you need to get somewhere in a hurry, you will find a metro at either end of the little cobblestone street (rue des Boulangers, 75005 Paris for google earth!) Better still, we have 5 brilliant bus routes that take you all over Paris - for example - the #86 winds through tiny left bank streets ( you could almost touch the lovely shops sometimes) and 20 minutes or so later you have stopped right under the Eiffel Tower. And at the other end of the street there is the #67 which crosses the Seine and winds up through various neighborhoods to Montmartre (about 45 minutes) So much cheaper and more fun than a tour bus! If you get a weekly pass you can get off in an area you would like to explore and then get back on again later. Such a nice way to get to know Paris. There is supermarket across the street , open until 10pm every night (except Sunday). And of in addition to the bakeries there are lovely food shops to drool over everywhere you turn. That`s when you appreciate the stairs!! There`s a very friendly cafe on the corner, Le Petit Cardinale, where you can pop in for whatever you fancy from 8am until midnight daily. Or just sit outside and people watch for hours. As for the apartment itself: It has one bedroom, but it sleeps 3 comfortably. The king size bed in the bedroom is actually 2 twin beds if needed, and the sofa in the sitting room is a proper custom made sofa bed. There is a walk in closet. In the bathroom the shower is attached to the wall above the bathtub. There is also a bidet. The kitchen is small but well equipped, and there is a microwave/convection combo oven and a 3 ring gas stove top. Also a dishwasher, a washing machine and a dryer, iron and ironing board, hairdryer, etc. I have tons of books, including guidebooks, an eclectic selection of CDs. and an apple laptop with wifi connection. Oh, and TV with CNN,BBC news, etc. Finding a place to rent in Paris can be daunting as there is SO much choice online these days, some of it a little misleading, so you do need to be wary, and if you have any questions you would be wise to telephone and speak to the owner. This may be a special trip for you, an anniversary perhaps , and you want to be sure you find somewhere to stay that lives up to your expectations and will enhance your Paris experience so you will have memories for a lifetime. In this case, this IS my home, and I have set it up accordingly, so it has the comforts and atmosphere of a real home, not a rental unit. I come over from San Francisco twice a year for a 2 month stay, and bring whatever creature comforts I find lacking in Paris! About the owner: Originally from Dublin, I live now in San Francisco and lucked into my apartment in Paris 14 years ago.
I knew as soon as I walked through the door and saw the light and the view that despite the 4 flights of stairs, this was IT!! So peaceful and airy.
It helped that it had just been beautifully renovated by an Italian and her architect, who had maximized the space while keeping the architectural details.
But I had to live in it to fully appreciate how brilliantly convenient the location is, even though I had previously lived in 3 different and very nice parts of Paris, including one in another part of the Latin Quarter - even closer to the river and Notre Dame, but jammed with tourists and fast food joints.
The 2 different metro lines and 4 buses within moments of the front door are something for which I give thanks on a daily basis as I go about my daily life without a car.
My friend Marie-Noel, who manages the apartment and greets guests, grew up on the Left Bank (she lives just down the road) and she gives real insider advice on the neighborhood.
We both want our visitors to have their stay live up to their hopes, and they do seem to, judging by all the kind and appreciative comments they write in the guest book.
