Perfect little cottage on a farm in the country.
My grandson loved visiting the horse(Buck) being greeted by the dogs and seeing the bunnies. Beds were comfortable and welcoming after a busy day of sightseeing.

Great location. 5 minutes from Peaks of Otter and the Blue Ridge Highway for site seeing and hiking. 35-40 minutes from Roanoke or Lynchburg. The best of both Worlds. Charming farm with great views!
We stayed here for several days for our daughter's graduation from Liberty University. This farm house had a unique, quaint style. Sarah, the owner, was very friendly and helpful, and was easy to get in touch with for any questions we had. Do note that there is only 1 bathroom here-I didn't pay attention to that. It has a folding partition separating it from the master bedroom, not a door. Not a huge deal for us since we were all family but worth noting if you're traveling with acquaintances. The kitchen is well stocked and there was a microwave, toaster, Keurig, and a full size fridge. Dining area was a little cramped but we made it work. Sarah left us a personalized note and some cookies for our arrival--a very sweet and kind touch. Living room is upstairs and very cozy and comfortable. TV worked well, and Wi-Fi was reliable. Beds were cozy and comfortable! The views were spectacular, and we were even treated to the northern lights one night. We made friends with Buck, their horse, who would come by and say hi in the mornings. We fed him apples :) Best of all, we did not get any last minute price changes or cancellation notices--which we had heard some places in the area will do, in order to charge more during graduation week. That was never an issue here--the price we originally booked was the price we paid. Very thankful for that! We had a nice relaxing stay here!! Very pleased!

Concerns
The location was beautiful and the hosts were friendly and responded swiftly to questions and problems. However for us in our late 70’s we were concerned about safety issues. The main entrance was tricky to manoeuvre with a concrete channel and steps. The sole bathroom with the only toilet was a passage from one of the bedrooms, and had no lock. A lock on the bathroom door and a shower faucet with a spray arm and easier to turn, would be really helpful. More than anything we were concerned that if there were a fire, the exit from one bedroom would be through the bathroom, the hall, the kitchen and finally the screen porch, and across the hard to navigate entry door.

Perfect weekend getaway
This cottage is a cute vrbo. It was perfect for my family of 5 which 2 are adults. The pond was perfect for fishing and caught some bass. Its location is absolutely beautiful unfortunately it rained a lot so we werent able to do many of the things we planned. All of the property owners was so nice and so friendly as they all made an effort to meet us and chit chat. Overall had a great experience here and would definitely stay here again.

Beautiful and peaceful
Such a beautiful place to stay! This cottage is the perfect mountain getaway! The kitchen is well stocked, plenty of linens, blankets and everything you'll need for a relaxing stay. The king size bed in the master bedroom is absolutely delightful. The swing on the porch is perfect for enjoying a peaceful evening. The owners are very easy to get in touch with and we even got to meet them! They are very accommodating! There are a lot of hiking trails close to the property and others are just a short drive away. Well worth the stay! We plan on going back soon!

Idyllic!!!
Such a beautiful, serene property in a beautiful part of Virginia. We have never used VRBO and this was recommended to us by friends who had stayed here and wow it did not disappoint! We enjoyed walking around the property, feeding the horses and rabbits and the views from the house were incredible. We visited a nearby winery and hiked A LOT. The restaurants recommended by Sarah were delicious and we greatly enjoyed the D-Day memorial. Overall it was an idyllic vacation, and we were sad to leave!

Another wonderful getaway!
We very much enjoyed coming back to “Buck and Noodle’s house,” thanks for having us again! We loved fishing on the ponds, sitting on the porch enjoying the views, and especially visiting with the pups and horses. On one rainy night we enjoyed dinner at Old Liberty Tavern and then working on a puzzle and watching a movie in the cozy living room. We also made the beautiful drive over the mountain to enjoy Natural Bridge, the Caverns, and the Safari Zoo. We are already excited to come back again soon!

Peaceful Retreat
This is a very interesting property, originally constructed as a root cellar. It was inviting, comfortable and just as described. The farm and surrounding area is beautiful. You feel like you are in the middle of nowhere but Bedford is very close. We enjoyed dinner at the Liberty Station restaurant.

Absolutely beautiful.
My husband and I stayed for a week in VA to do some hiking and biking around the area. This was our first experience with Vrbo and when we came across this listing we were intrigued. We live in the city of Pittsburgh and this is the complete opposite from a city life and we couldn't have been happier. Sarah and Tony were wonderful host, the property was amazing and the views were incredible. We will definitely be a repeat guest.

About the host

Hosted by Sarah Mayhew

Host profile image
My father-in-law purchased this farm in 1978 where he and wife, Margaret raised my husband and his brother. Margaret and Tony still reside in the large farmhouse which is located just a short distance from the property. My husband, myself and our three children live “over the pond and through the woods” from the cottage. As the more tech savvy one between the two of us, I manage the online reservations while Tony typically enjoys being hands-on with anything that’s needed during your stay. Feel free to contact either of us! We always love to get to know our visitors!

Why they chose this property

The farm was once a full working dairy farm, dating over 200 years old. Up until last year, we have rented this cottage as a long-term rental. We are pleased to now offer the cottage as short-term rental where visitors to the area can enjoy a home such as ours.

What makes this property unique

The peacefulness that our property brings is something you can't find many other places. As you swing under our pergola or sit around the fire pit and listen to the sounds around you, one can imagine what the farm would have looked like so many years ago. We are a history lover's dream!
