About this property

Gorgeous barn conversion Northumberland coast - close to Embleton and Alnwick.

We are currently refurbishing our lovely cottage so have blocked out most dates to allow us to do that, however, we still have some availability so if you would like to stay this year please drop us a message and we will get back to you.

This grade II listed rural cottage has everything you need for a peaceful stay in Northumberland - famous for its breath taking coastline and castles. The cottage has beautiful original features along with a modern kitchen and bathrooms. There is a spacious lounge with comfy sofas and a wood burning stove for chilled evenings with a book or the TV. The property has a gorgeous south facing courtyard and a private garden. Both are enclosed and suitable for dogs.

It is just a 10 minute drive to stunning sandy beaches where you can relax, swim or build sandcastles. You can walk for miles along the coastline if you fancy or get involved in a variety of water sports and activities if that's your thing. There are also five golf courses close by.

With the lovely village of Embleton nearby you can walk from the cottage door in half an hour (just one mile across the fields) to the village (or 5 minutes by car) which has a well-stocked village shop and great pubs.

Fifteen minutes along the coast you will find Seahouses where you can hop on a boat trip for seal and bird watching and ten minutes further you will be at Bamburgh famous for its amazing castle and coastline.

Alnwick is a beautiful market town and just 15 minutes away where you can stock up on provisions. There is also lots to see and do - Alnwick Castle is one of Britain's most iconic castles and recognisable as Hogwarts from the Harry Potter Films. Alnwick Garden is a visit of its own - 42 aces of formal gardens, stunning water features and a huge treehouse and Barter books - one of Britain's largest second hand book shops - is a magical place to browse or have a coffee or an ice cream.

The closest main line station is in Alnmouth with regular trains to Berwick, Edinburgh and Newcastle.

Northumberland is a special place - there is lots going on if you want it but you can always find a secluded spot on the beach.

Middle Barn impressions
Middle Barn cottage was a perfect place for our group of six adults to stay the week as we explored Northumberland. A beautifully renovated old barn: it was comfortable, clean, well-stocked, and well-maintained. Plenty of room for our group, with the courtyard serving as an extra living space. Would happily stay there again.

Lovely quiet location
We all had a lovely stay at Middle Barn Cottage with our dogs. It was spotlessly clean on arrival with all amenities provided. We were very lucky with the weather and got to enjoy drinks and barbecue in the private courtyard. Generous parking for 2 cars at the front. The bedrooms were very comfortable and the new bathroom upstairs lovely and fresh looking. Downstairs WC and washbasin very useful when everyone is getting ready. The spacious lounge has plenty of seating, a wood burner (not required) and a large tv which we plugged our amazon stick into to use Prime, Netflix etc. The kitchen diner was spacious and we spent most evenings playing games at the table before slobbing in front of the telly. Great location for all the local beaches, we visited a different one every day. Bamburgh castle is recommended as is very dog friendly. In contrast, Alnwick castle doesn’t allow dogs on the grounds. There are many other castles to enjoy. We didn’t visit many pubs and restaurants due to Covid-19, but The Rocking Horse Cafe a short drive away has plenty of outdoor seating and is super dog friendly. Holy Island worth a visit but the village was very busy, in contrast the beaches there were deserted and huge! All in all a fantastic holiday was had by all. We will definitely recommend.

A country delight!
Middle Barn is a delightful cottage — all the comforts of home in a lovely country setting about 7 miles from Alnwick. It proved to be an ideal location for sampling the delights of Northumberland. Communication with owner Gail Peters was prompt and pleasant; she provided us with excellent directions to the cottage. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen (and, indeed, the whole property) very well equipped, the cottage immaculate. Having a downstairs loo was a bonus. We enjoyed coffee in the sunny courtyard and wished it had been cool enough to have a fire in the wood stove. Wish we’d had longer than 3 days. Many thanks.

We live in Newcastle-upon-Tyne - just 45 minutes from the property. We love the Northumberland coast at all times of the year for its amazing beaches and dramatic sea and skies.

Why they chose this property

The castles and coastline are breath-taking. Northumberland beaches and national park are understandably popular with walkers, cyclists and nature lovers. There are also five golf courses within a short a drive from the cottage. Whether you want to play golf, build sandcastles with the kids on the beach, visit historic sites or enjoy great cycling on quiet lanes with great views there is lots to do.
Despite this Northumberland is never crowded. Shhhhhh..... dont tell anyone - we want it to stay this way.

What makes this property unique

Middle Barn is a beautiful grade II listed stone barn conversion and has been let as a holiday cottage for the past ten years. We are delighted to be the new owners in 2024. We absolutely love staying here - it is so peaceful and perfectly located to get to the coast. It is absolutely home from home for us and that is how we want our guests to feel.
