Nestled in the trees near the edge of a quiet spring-fed lake, the cottage affords privacy, coolness, and beautiful views. It is located 30 minutes from Ellsworth, with its many stores, which serves as the gateway to Acadia National Park, and is within easy driving distance of 'the real DownEast' and even Canadian attractions. One hour from Bangor.
The cottage is about 30 feet from the lake. There is also a second building which functions as a workshop and storage area, but also has a double bed, microwave and small refrigerator. (This building is used for sleeping only by special permission.)
There is a dock, a large paddle boat, an aluminum rowboat, and 2 kayaks (1 dbl., 1 sgl). Molasses Pond is a clear, calm lake and is 2 miles long. Access from the driveway is by means of a long ramp and 7 stairs. Pets negotiable. The 2 bedrooms have dbl. beds supplemented by single beds on the 2nd floor. About Paul Dodge
I was a pastor in Maine during the past, but Winnie & I now live in New Holland, PA. We usually use the cottage ourselves the first part of the summer and in the fall, but are flexible about the dates. We also lived in Thailand more than 20 years, and on Long Island, NY, for 9 years.
Paul Dodge purchased this Cottage in 1979

Beatiful cottage on a beutiful lake!
We had really good time in and out of cottage. Cottage has everything you would need for vacation on a lake. We spent our time there reading, swimming, kayaking and fishing (there are some decent size white perch in a lake). Trips to Acadia a must - it is about 50 minutes away on a mostly scenic road.
Paul and Winnie, thank you for your hospitality!
It is a beautiful piece of land. The cabin is run down.
The lack of AC and heat meant that we had to put fans in the windows in the morning then take them out close them down and use space heaters to keep warm at night. There was one decent bed and the rest were ridiculously soft or hard. There was no remote to turn on the TV so we had to do it from buttons on the back of the TV and the DVD player didn't work. We purchased one at Walmart and Paul did reimburse us. The towels smelled musty and dusty.
The first negative review we've ever had! This is a family cottage, not a resort, and is appreciated by people whose idea of a vacation is enjoying the lake and the area attractions rather than watching movies full-time in a controlled environment. The cottage is certainly not new but is generally in good repair, with attractive siding and a new metal roof (which was installed after this review). We do not have AC because the large sliding porch windows & the new thermostatically controlled fans in other windows are sufficient for all but the most demanding renters. We apologize for the failure of the remote & the DVD, which have been replaced. The TV is an up-to-date flat screen type.
We regret that the complainant's extensive back surgery made him particularly sensitive to mattress softness or hardness. These were the first renters of the season and we should have laundered them again after taking them out of storage. Our mistake.
This couple was unusually hard to please due to their unrealistic expectations, an unusual heat wave and our own oversights which we will avoid in the future.
The house is just as pictured. Paul and Winnie were wonderful hosts and were great at communicating before and during our stay. We absolutely loved having Molasses Pond out the back door and used the kayaks and paddle boat at their private dock everyday. Our favorite spot in the house was the sunroom where we sat to read or play games while enjoying the view of the lake. The upstairs loft was perfect for our kids, and the kitchen was well-equipped. There was a mInor plumbing issue when we arrived that Paul made sure was taken care of quickly. We were told not to drink the water at the house, and Paul had a few jugs there for us to get us started for the week. The only thing that would have made the stay better would have been a washing machine.
Peaceful and Serene
We enjoyed our stay on Molasses Pond in this comfortable cottage with amazing views. It was a very quiet setting. Kayaking, fishing and paddling often with the lake to ourselves. The cottage was very clean and well maintained. There are stairs and and a ramp down to the cottage and stairs to the water which places the cottage in a spot for spectcular sunrises and sunsets. We picked wild blueberries for pancakes and enjoyed crabmeat rolls and lobster. Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor are great places to visit near by.
Would come back in a heartbeat!
We truly enjoyed our stay at the Dodge's cottage. It was the perfect combination of fun and relaxation. The kids couldn't get enough of swimming in the crystal clear water. Both the kids and my husband found the bass fishing to be challenging, but worth their time (they caught several very big bass). We kayaked and floated around the lake every day. I enjoyed the mornings reading my book on the dock, watching the ducks and listening to the loons. The cottage was all we needed to relax at night and play a good game of cards. It was close enough to attractions like Bar Harbor and Acadia, which we made sure to enjoy as well. All in all it was a great vacation. Thank you!
Lake front cottage on Quiet Lake
Loved our stay in this cottage, on this beautiful lake. We enjoyed using the paddle boat and the kayaks. As well as watching the sun rise over the lake. Being close to Bar Harbor and Acadia State Park is a plus. Having the owners there to greet us upon arrival was great. I would most definitely stay here again!
Swimming, boating, fishing, biking, hiking, listening to the loons, visiting local fairs and parks and museums in the wider area.
