About the property

An Alternative to Condos, Perfectly Private, Hot tub, Nearby Beaches and Trails

Welcome to Hale Kokio, a well loved and established vacation retreat. The cottage with bright living area, pretty bedroom, full kitchen and full bath opens to the covered lanai with hot tub. This getaway is on two private tropical acres. Designed for two, decorated in the gentle colors of Hawaii and invites easy living. Our guests have celebrated special occasions, honeymoons, well deserved vacations and trips of a lifetime.

The amenties are selected with your comfort in mind. Chaise lounges are under the monkey pod tree, a hammock is tucked by the banana patch and a gas grill is by the side of the cottage. Outdoor living space is created with a dining table, sling chairs and hot tub on the covered lanai. And yes, a smart TV and cozy sofa are in the indoor living area. High speed internet, wifi, cable TV and a collection of books are provided.

Our little bit of paradise, where you will find varieties of fruit and flowering plants, is maintained with sustainable gardening practices. The grounds are bordered with mature palms, hibiscus and fruit trees. You will discover, avacado, citrus, papaya, bananas, coconuts and more. The flowering plants, orchids, puakenikeni, native hibisucus and plumeria take turns as the seasons change. We are located in Kilauea Farms, a quiet and friendly neighborhood.

Hale Kokio is well located for North Shore activities while remaining a convenient distance to points East and South.

Three quiet beaches, Pila'a, Rock Quarry and Kalihiwai are within five minutes. Each with its own way to keep you close to nature be it a trail, a river, or great surf.

There are a number of hiking trails in the area

Our charming town of Kilauea is within five minutes. You will find conveniences: post office, gas station, and restaurants, shops and adventures. Of note are Kilauea Bakery, The Healthy Hut and the Fish Market. Farmers markets pop up twice a week. Visit Kilauea Lighthouse Point.

Our guests love Hale Kokio. We are known for taking special care of our visitors. This begins with a simple but thorough reservation process that includes introduction to Kauai and its customs. We are available to answer questions as you prepare for your stay. Once on island, Rob is your contact. The neighborhood surrounding Hale Kokio is quiet and friendly. Magnificent Kauai offers so much natural beauty and capturing that is an activity in itself. View the Napali coast by boat, Kayak down the Hanalei River. Surf or paddle board at Kilihiwai. Hike or bike the private five mile Wai Koa Loop Trail behind the mini golf in Kilauea.

Anini Beach. Perfect for snorkeling. Grab the gear at the cotttage. There is also a beach park at Anini, pass that and continue on the road. You can park right along the beach

Try Princeville Ranch for Ziplining and Riding. Foodland, restaurants and shops are in the shopping area

Hanalei is about 20 minutes from Kilauea. You will come to the first one way bridge on the road that takes you north. Halalei with its ecclectic vibe and famous Hanalei Beach is one of Kauai' old towns. Stop at a food truck, explore the shops and marvel at Hanalei Bay. Plan a sunset walk on the beach

Hanalei River is a route for kayaking and viewing the tropical landscape only possible by Kayak. Did you know that Kauai is the only Hawaiian Island wit navigable rivers.

Lumahai Beach: Dramatic! The beach was the site of the movie, South Pacific. There is room for off road parking at the trailhead to the beach or drive futher and park in the lot.

Keep your eye on the surf. Do not swim.

Napali Coast: The drive from Hale Kokio is 15 miles and without stops will take about 45 minutes. This takes you to the end of road. Sun bathe at Ke'e Beach. If you plan to hike you will will need a permit for camping.( If you are not a hiker, reserve a boat cruise, a great way to see the tropical landscape of this rugged coastline.)

East Side: Kapa'a. So much to see and do. About 20 minutes from Hale Kokio. The town has contrasts of great evening dining, a number of coffee shops. There are many art shops, surf shops, and island style clothing shops. Stop for a famous Bubba Burger. And of course, visit a beach or two.

About Eleanor (NY) Rob (Kauai)

Our family is interested in gardening, fishing, photography and music and generally being near the ocean. In our travels, we discovered Kauai is perfect for these activities. Some family members call Kauai home, others of us visit as often as we can. Our community is welcoming, lifestyle is simple and the beauty of the island abundant. What more can we ask for, walks on the beach, cultivating our gardens, sharing harvests with friends, music by the fire, preparing meals of fresh fish and local produce.

Eleanor (NY) Rob (Kauai) purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Eleanor (NY) Rob (Kauai) chose North Shore

We visited Kauai a number of times before our decision to purchase Hale Kokio in 2006. The property was in the perfect location, showcased the natural beauty of the North Shore in a neighborhood that was developing in authentic island style.

The grounds were so pretty and the design was perfect for additional planting and cultivation. We all decided that this was just the right place for us.

What makes this cottage unique

Hale Kokio is private, comfortable and welcoming. Hale Kokio is the perfect alternatie to a condo or hotel. You will remain close to nature yet enjoy all the amenties that we provide in this magical hideaway. We handle all aspects of your stay, adding a personal touch. We know the island well, have family in Kauai and are happy to share what we know about the island.

Our covered lanai with private hot tub is a much appreciated feature. Views of the sunset from the grounds are an extra special experience. The night sky is amazing

Perfect Kauai experience

  • 5 of 5

Hale Kokio embodies everything Kauai. Nature, tranquility, peacefulness, beauty...I could go on.

It's a place you leave and then dream about.

It's a place you wake up in the morning and decide which beach paradise to spend the day at.

It's a place you come back to, grill a piece of fresh fish, relax in the hot tub, and then fall asleep to the sounds of nature.

No, it's not right on the beach. On the other hand it's perfectly situated for short trips to the best the north and east side of the island offer.

Truly a fantastic place with equally fabulous hosts.

We absolutely loved our stay here. It is truly magical. From the shaded porch, to the fruit trees in the yard, to the charming bungalow, everything was perfect. We are so glad we chose to stay here the whole time and didn't split time with a condo on the ocean. Don't hesitate- book now!

Idyllic Hideaway in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Hale Kokio is a magical, serene hideaway in a perfect location for every adventure along the North Shore. Our days were filled with jungle hikes, waterfalls, and hidden beaches; and our nights at Hale Kokio were filled with quiet dinners on the lanai and restorative soaks in the hot tub. We loved exploring the enchanting grounds, and discovering different fruits and flowers at every turn. Can't wait to return! Mahalo!

Owner's Response: The perfect visitor to Kauai. Seeking out the beauty of the North Shore and all it has to offer and then going for it. Since we are hearing from so many guests that they are preparing meals at Hale Kokio, we will share some of our recipes. Perhaps guests will leave some for us as well. Thank you for being such great guests.

What a wonderful, enchanting home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

Our hosts were friendly and welcoming.

We found Kaua'i a beautiful, interesting island, but each day it was so relaxing to return to Hale Kokio. It is just enough off Highway 56 that the traffic is out of earshot, replaced by beautiful bird song. We even came to be able to sleep despite the ubiquitous roosters. If you enjoy birds, bring your binoculars.

The guest house is ample for two. It comes with a well-equipped kitchen stocked with some basic condiments etc. The lanai has lots of room, and we ate all our meals there. We are recommending Hale Kokio to our friends.

Regarding issues raised in past reviews:

-my wife thought the bed very comfortable while I found it too soft. Can't please everybody!

-If it were my home, I'd put new rollers on the patio screen door. It gets a lot of use and needs attention.

-After turning on the hot water faucet it takes a long time for the on-demand propane heater to deliver, which is not a big problem if that were as far as it went. It seems, though, to stop heating when the volume from the faucet is low, leading to another long wait, not pleasant when in the shower. I soon learned to leave the faucet on full blast until I was finished in the shower. This kind of defeats the energy conservation purpose of the demand heater.

-The hot tub worked just fine, as did everything else, with the above-noted exceptions.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words. We appreciate all comments. Regarding the water, we have left a guideline for use of on demand water. We have been checking the system and with guests and have not had any complaints. We do know that turning the water on and off can result in some delay. As always, it is best to let us know if there is a problem so we can address it. Yes, the sliding door frame needs to be replaced. We have made repairs but these can fail after a short period of time. This replacement is in process just as all repairs are done when necessary. We know all guests have many choices for a place to stay and appreciate that you were clear that overall you recommend a stay at Hale Kokio. Thanks for your comments
