About Eleanor (NY) Rob (Kauai)
Our extended family is interested in gardening, fishing, photography and music and generally being near the ocean. In our travels, we discovered Kauai is perfect for these activities. Some family members, pictured above, call Kauai home, others of us visit as often as we can. Hale Kokio is a family owned property. Our community is welcoming, lifestyle is simple and the beauty of the island abundant. What more can we ask for?walks on the beach, cultivating our gardens, sharing harvests with friends, music by the fire, preparing meals of fresh fish and local produce.
Eleanor (NY) Rob (Kauai) purchased this Cottage in 2006
Why Eleanor (NY) Rob (Kauai) chose Kilauea
We visited Kauai a number of times before our decision to purchase Hale Kokio in 2006. The property was in the perfect location, showcased the natural beauty of the North Shore in a neighborhood that was developing in authentic island style. The grounds were so pretty and the design was perfect for additional planting and cultivation. We all decided that this was just the right place for us.

Perfect for what we were looking for
We stayed a week at Hale Kokio and were not sure how we'd feel being without an ocean view. We really didn't miss it. As others have noted, the cottage is immaculately clean, there are plenty of dishes and cookware, the bed was comfortable and it was decorated beautifully. The grill heated up quickly and was easy to use. We also loved the washer and dryer on the property. Very convenient. A few things renters may want to be aware of... there is a french press coffee maker which we were able to figure out after watching an instructional YouTube video and there is no microwave. We didn't miss a microwave - in fact, we didn't notice we didn't have one for several days. However, if you rely on a microwave, this may be something to consider. One more thing - the parking area is surrounded by beautiful palm trees. However, coconuts fall from the trees, so keep that in mind when parking and don't park directly under one or there may be damage to your rental car. They are beautiful though.
The property was like walking in paradise. There were of course chickens and roosters all over the property as well as lizards, a few stray/feral cats and two dogs - one small shabby dog that we saw for only a few minutes at the other end of the property before disappearing and another large blonde lab who came by for extended visits on two occasions. We named him Swiss and fell in love with him.
The neighborhood was great, quiet and not at all crowded or touristy, however, within close driving distance of touristy towns like Hanalei, and Kapaa. The highlight of the cottage was by far the hot tub. Kauai was overly overcast and rainy this trip, so we spent many mornings and afternoons in the hot tub, watching the rain fall.
I can't fault the cottage anything. It was perfect and in fact we have already shared the VRBO link with some friends who are planning a trip.
We had the pleasure of staying here for a week. The cottage is very comfortable, has a great kitchen, hot tub and lush and private grounds. During the week we stayed there was an abnormal amount of rain, and ended up staying at the cottage more than we planned - but with the covered deck and hot tub, we were able to still be outside during the downpours. We also ended up cooking more than we expected to, which was great and fun with a great little BBQ, full stove/oven and fridge. The kitchen is well stocked with various pots, pans, skillets, cookie sheets, and lots of cooking utensils. It is close to some shopping, dining and several beaches as well. Lisa and Rob take care of this property, and live in the house one driveway up. We met Lisa on our first day, and she is very kind and helpful. They have a couple of critters that came to visit us off and on throughout the visit, which we LOVED! We enjoyed our visit so much that we already booked our return trip later this year. Highly recommend.
It is great to have such a full and great review done by an experienced visitor to Kauai. Thank you.
You have covered it all: the amenities provided, the aspects of Hale Kokio as a getaway and the ease of getting to beaches, adventures and restaurants. ( We hope you explored the food trucks and food stands as well. There are some really great chefs on the north shore).
We look forward to your return to Hale Kokio
It was a beautiful and perfect place to stay! We celebrated our 30th anniversary and this was ideal. Away from all our worries! How can we move in?!? Mahalo nui
Thanks for coming to Hale Kokio for the celebration of your anniversary. The cottage and gardens are loved by so many of our guests. Please do return for another stay.
We spent 7 amazing nights at Hale Kokio and we could not have chosen a more beautiful spot. The home was perfect and comfortable and the grounds are gorgeous. Easy to get to, but tucked back from the street, with plenty of privacy, making it perfect for a romantic getaway. We enjoyed the hot tub every day and sampled the grapefruit from trees in the garden. The house was so peaceful we were tempted to just stay home and relax every day, and its location on the North Shore was perfect for day trips.
Hiking to the beach at Hanakapi'ai was a highlight of the trip, along with canoeing on the Waialua River. The towns of Kilauea, Princeville, and Hanalei are close by and offer plenty of shops, restaurants and bars. Driving north along the Kuhio Highway from the house to Hanalei was one of the most gorgeous drives we have ever taken.
We will definitely return to Hale Kokio. Mahalo!

Outstanding North Shore Cottage
What a delightful place! Quiet, peaceful, relaxing, and private. It is clean, well maintained, tastefully furnished and nicely decorated. Excellent kitchen. Comfy bed. Large deck with hot tub. Beautifully maintained grounds. Responsive owners. What more can we say? This cottage is exactly what we were expecting, and more. Great north shore location, not far from the tourist centers of Hanalei, Princeville, and Kilauea, yet with the relaxed feel of old Hawaii. We spent a week at Hale Kokio and enjoyed it greatly. We certainly will return.
We have been offering Hale Kokio to visitors to Kauai for about ten years now and always kept in mind the comfort of our guests. We appreciate the spirit of aloha that our guests bring to Hale Kokio and the reviews and notes of thanks written to us. This helps us offer a comfortable and welcoming cottage. What we are noticing is that Kilauea is really representing the North Shore Kauai as a real gateway to paradise. Thanks so much for helping guests envision a stay at Hale Kokio. Please do return to our Kauai Cottage.
Wonderful cottage off the beaten path
We loved our stay at the Hale Kokio, it was a nice between spot for getting to Hanalei and Kapaa, and the perfect retreat at the end of the day. The hot tub on the deck was super relaxing and private and everything was super clean and comortable. We even had snorkel gear and chairs at our disposal and had fun snorkeling at Anini beach. Hope to visit and stay here again, Mahalo!
Wow, you know how to explore an island and also how to take time to relax and restore.
Our update of Hale Kokio was completed in December and it was a fun project. My favorite part was adding island charm to the decor. The new sliders to the lanai and screen on the front door were added to bring in the island breeze and even better views of the gardens.
We hope you will return for more Kauai Adventures and thank you for the kind words about our Kauai Cottage.
The North Shore of Kauai hosts the towns of Kilauea, Princeville and Hanalei. Drive north from the cottage and you will come to a number of beaches (from the famous to quiet and secluded). Try snorkling, parasailing, fishing or swimming at Anini, surfing or paddling or catching the sun on Hanalei, a beach party at Lumahi or early morning stroll at Tunnels. (free guides to beaches are readily available on the island) The town of Kilauea is a gem. Try breakfast at the Common Ground on the former guava plantation, Joe's Fruit Stand for smoothies, the Kilauea Fish market for take out or outdoor meal. The Kilauea Bakery, newly expanded Healthy Hut and the general store offer quality food and supplies. Kilauea hosts 2 weekly farmers' markets. Consider taking the short drive to the Lighthouse Point. The mini golf course features native plantings and there is a hiking trail adjacent to it. Both just down Kuhio Hwy in Kilauea Hanalei hosts ecclectic shops, art galleries, surf shops. Rent kyacks or arrange a river tour from Hanalei. Be sure to sample a 'shave ice' or Bubba Burger as you explore this town. Princeville is known for its world class golf course. Check out the Princeville Ranch for its list of activities including Ziplining, Horseback Riding. Travel further north to Napali Coast for hiking. Find Ke'e Beach at the end of the north road. You will discover the one lane bridges and be sure to stop at Lumahai Beach where South Pacific was filmed. A walk on this beach shows you the dramatic waters. Do not turn your back to the water. Head east to explore East and South sides. Visit Kapaa, see Waimea Canyon, Kokee State Park, and so much more. Guidebooks are provided in the cottage. You will be surrounded by the natural beauty of Kauai, its people, customs and so much to do. Come visit this tropical paradise
