The cottage with bright living area, pretty bedroom, well appointed kitchen and full bath is decorated in the calming colors of Kauai. A set of french doors open to the covered lanai. The lanai, furnished with a hot tub, lounge chairs and dining table is a bonus outdoor living space.

You will find chaise lounges in the shade of the monkey pod trees, a hammock tucked by the banana patch. Explore the gardens where you will find a wide variety of flowering plants and tropical fruit trees. Mature palms, and hibiscus border the two acres.

Combine active days exploring the island with quiet times at your island retreat. You can enjoy the comfort of the cozy sofa and smart TV indoors or a restorative soak in the hot tub on the lanai. Breakfast at the kitchen bar or set a festive table for a meal on the lanai. Be sure to turn on the fairy lights for a touch of magic.

Hale Kokio is located in Kilauea Farms on a quiet country road. The charming town of Kilauea is a five minute drive. This is where you can grab a quick breakfast at the Kilauea Bakery or coffee at Trilogy. Kauai Juice is new to town. Purchase groceries or take out at the Healthy Hut or FishMarket, buy gas for the car, or purchase a gift. The Kilauea Lighthouse and Lookout point are just outside town. Farmers markets pop up in Kilauea twice a week.

A number of quiet beaches are five minutes from Hale Kokio: Pila'a, Rock Quarry or Kalihiwai. Pila'a is a good spot to view the sunrise. Be sure to grab the beach chairs, beach towels, snorkel equipment and umbrella.

A trailhead is located at Anini Hou Community Park, off of Kuhio Highway near the Kauai Mini Golf and Botanical Gardens. You will be within 15 miles of all North Shore spots.

Magnificent Kauai offers so much natural beauty and capturing that is an activity in itself. View the Napali coast by boat, Kayak the Hanalei River. Surf or paddle board at Kilihiwai. Hike the private five mile Wai Koa Loop Trail behind the mini golf in Kilauea.

Anini Beach is perfect for snorkeling. Grab the gear at the cottage. There is also a beach park at Anini, pass that and continue on the road. You can park right along the beach.

Try Princeville Ranch for Zip lining and Riding. Foodland, restaurants and shops are in the Princeville shopping area

Hanalei is about 20 minutes from Kilauea. You will come to the first one way bridge on the road that takes you north. Hanalei with its eclectic vibe and famous Hanalei Beach is one of Kauai' old towns. Stop at a food truck, explore the shops and marvel at Hanalei Bay. Plan a sunset walk on the beach.

Hanalei River is a route for kayaking and viewing the tropical landscape only possible by Kayak. Did you know that Kauai is the only Hawaiian Island with navigable rivers?

Lumahai Beach: Dramatic! The beach was the site of the movie, South Pacific. There is room for off road parking at the trailhead to the beach or drive further and park in the lot.

Keep your eye on the surf. This is not a beach for swimming.

Napali Coast: The drive from Hale Kokio is 15 miles and without stops will take about 45 minutes. This takes you to the end of road. Sun bathe at Ke'e Beach. If you plan to hike you will will need a permit for camping.( If you are not a hiker, reserve a boat cruise, a great way to see the tropical landscape of this rugged coastline.)

East Side: Kapa'a. About 20 minutes from Hale Kokio headed East. The town has the feel of old time yet you will find lots of modern style island shops.. Have a great evening dining, try a blend of Kauai coffee or a light snack at Mermaids. There are many art shops, surf shops, and clothing shops. Stop for a famous Bubba Burger. And of course, visit a beach or two.

About Eleanor (NY) Rob (Kauai)

Our extended family is interested in gardening, fishing, photography and music and generally being near the ocean. In our travels, we discovered Kauai is perfect for these activities. Some family members, pictured above, call Kauai home, others of us visit as often as we can. Hale Kokio is a family owned property. Our community is welcoming, lifestyle is simple and the beauty of the island abundant. What more can we ask for?walks on the beach, cultivating our gardens, sharing harvests with friends, music by the fire, preparing meals of fresh fish and local produce.

Eleanor (NY) Rob (Kauai) purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Eleanor (NY) Rob (Kauai) chose Kilauea

We visited Kauai a number of times before our decision to purchase Hale Kokio in 2006. The property was in the perfect location, showcased the natural beauty of the North Shore in a neighborhood that was developing in authentic island style.

The grounds were so pretty and the design was perfect for additional planting and cultivation. We all decided that this was just the right place for us.

What makes this cottage unique

Your very own private getaway for two where you are encouraged to experience the abundant beauty of Kauai. Walk out the door to discover the gardens. Hale Kokio is private, comfortable and welcoming. Hale Kokio is the perfect

alternative to a condo or hotel. You will remain close to nature yet enjoy all the amenities that we provide in this magical hideaway. We handle all aspects of your stay, adding a personal touch. We know the island well, have family in Kauai and are happy to share what we know about the island.

Our covered lanai with private hot tub is a much appreciated feature. Views of the sunset from the grounds are an extra special experience. The night sky is amazing

Perfect Kauai experience

  • 5 of 5

Hale Kokio embodies everything Kauai. Nature, tranquility, peacefulness, beauty...I could go on.

It's a place you leave and then dream about.

It's a place you wake up in the morning and decide which beach paradise to spend the day at.

It's a place you come back to, grill a piece of fresh fish, relax in the hot tub, and then fall asleep to the sounds of nature.

No, it's not right on the beach. On the other hand it's perfectly situated for short trips to the best the north and east side of the island offer.

Truly a fantastic place with equally fabulous hosts.

Perfect peaceful oasis

  • 5 of 5

This is such a lovely cottage for two! Let me count the ways: The lanai where cozy breakfasts can be enjoyed to the sound of the morning bird chorus, the hot tub, the lovely décor, the cooking amenities, the perfect shower, the garden and fruit trees all around.... and Rob who was so helpful as we navigated on foot the lovely beaches of the Kilauea area. We would love to come back!

Perfect place for a couple

  • 5 of 5

Hale Kokio is charming and very comfortable, on a beautiful property. You'll get visits from many chickens and some neighborhood pets. Convenient to the botanical gardens and lighthouse, and an easy drive to Princeville. Rob is very nice and everything about our stay was lovely.

They can be a surprise and we are happy to know that you enjoyed watching them on the property. Nalu , the neighborhood mascot dog does visit. We can always coax him away. Something Special

  • 5 of 5

Just got back from our week long stay, and my wife and I are still on cloud 9. I was definitely looking for something beyond the mass produced condo properties and hotel rooms on Kauai for our Christmas getaway, and we found that and more at Hale Kokio. The two acres of palms and citrus: serene. The one bedroom bungalow: everything we needed with nothing wasted.

While driving and traffic are part of life on Kauai, we found the property to be centrally located near restaurants, local commercial centers, and outdoor activities.

As for the dozen or so roosters on the property, we loved them. Kauai has the densest population of wild chickens of the Hawaiian Islands. They are everywhere. So remember: you are living on a farm in tropical paradise. Be prepared to be awoken by organic alarm clocks, and appreciate how different they sound to car horns and city sounds. I should also mention the neighbor's yellow lab that visited our front porch on a few evenings (we were calling him Rufus). He was a sweetheart and only added to the charm of the place.

We cooked farmers market produce. We surfed and hiked and snorkeled. We booked garden tours and boat trips. We had a wonderful time, and we are extremely grateful to Eleanor and Rob for their island hospitality. The thought and care that they have put into this property truly shows. We can't wait to go back.

Owner's Response: Happy New Year. We appreciate your wonderfully complete description of your stay at Hale Kokio. Your itinerary is a very generous gift to readers who are hoping to balance relaxation with adventures. The dog is Nalu. He has been a long time resident in the neighborhood. We have not named the chickens as they come and go. I should mention that we do provide earplugs to anyone who asks. We have recently updated cottage, inside and out. Glad you noticed. Please do return for another stay. Our Instagram feed will start up again soon, so look there from time to time. Mahalo, Eleanor

Perfect Bungalow for our Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent 5 nights here for the first leg of our honeymoon. Such an amazing place! We don't care for crowded condos and large crowds of people...This place gave us the privacy we wanted and the ambiance of a true Island feel! The Deck was cozy, the small hot tub was perfect for an after hiking soak. I would definitely recommed staying here, and when we come back we will stay here again. Thank you!

Wonderful Honeymoon Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was amazing! We loved it! It was quite and serene, just what we were looking for. We especially loved walking the grounds and picking fruits from the tropical fruit trees. The bed was super comfortable. Luckily, we are early risers. There is a rooster that likes to crow at 4am. ;-) If waking at 4am is not your thing, you may want ear plugs. I'll admit we wanted to roast that rooster by day 3. It was all part of the experience of being in nature. So we didn't let the roosters bother us. Our favorite meals were the ones that we cooked at the cottage. There are limited roads in Kauia, so the traffic can be really bad. Getting to restaurants is a bit of a challenge. We highly recommend this magical oasis! We will return!

Owner's Response: Increasingly honeymoon couples are choosing Hale Kokio as their honeymoon haven with each couple finding their own favorite features of the property. About the roosters, they are all over the island. Sometimes they stop for a short visit in our area. We do have earplugs when requested. Wish you had asked. We will get a trimmming of the tree where they were likey roosting. That is the humane way to send them on their way. As for the traffic, we will be sure to mention the alternate route available when headed east. Signs are posted, we will add that information to our welcome information. Always great to know you will spread the word that you considered Hale Kokio to be a wonderful honeymoon retreat. Mahalo.
