Spring Creek Splendor. The Perfect Location. Kids of All Ages Love It Here!

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,300 sq ft
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

New 2 bedroom walkout lower level cabin apartment surrounded by alpine beauty.

This newly constructed walkout apartment is just a few feet from the enchanting sounds and solitude of Spring Creek. Huge front windows provide great light and visibility of the creek, willows, scenic bridge, pine trees and surrounding mountains. It does not seem like you are on a lower level. Good internet and cell service is available. Very open floor plan in the round makes for great family space around the natural pinewood bar or autumn gold slate gas fireplace. Located three miles south of charming Hill City, guests are only a short stroll from the Mickelson Trail, 15 minutes from Mount Rushmore and Sylvan Lake, 10 minutes from Custer, 30 minutes from Rapid City, and less than one hour from Deadwood and the winter sports areas near Lead.

This is a spacious fully furnished walkout apartment with huge windows and a large private patio where the gurgling brook, meadow, and scenic pines invite exploration. Deer, turkeys, and chipmunks are frequent visitors. The creek has catchable rainbow trout.

This circular shaped structure is a "Mandala" kit home and fits into this alpine hillside beautifully. The cozy furnishings and natural Black Hills slate gas fireplace will help you relax after a day enjoying the historic sites and unforgettable adventures which abound in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

The master bedroom has a queen bed and a direct opening to the patio. The second bedroom has a comfortable full size bed. A self-inflating queen size inflatable mattress provides a very comfortable bed for a third couple or the children.

The activities available are beyond description but some of our favorites include:

Biking and hiking on the Mickelson Trail

Eating at the Alpine Inn in Hill City

Hiking to the top of Black Elk Peak (tallest peak between the Rockies and the Alps)

Historic sites galore- Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Deadwood, Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave, Badlands National Park, Pine Ridge and Wounded Knee, The Open Cut at Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, etc.

Swimming at Sheridan, Sylvan, Pactola Lakes, Cascade Falls, Hippy Hole, Angostura Reservoir

Devil's Tower

1880 Train

Black Hills Geologic Institute

Prairie Berry Winery and Miners microbrewery

Centennial Hiking Trail

Picnics anywhere

Wine on the patio and watch the sunset

Look for satellites in the incredibly bejeweled starry heavens

Exploring the art galleries

Skiing and snowshoeing

Horseback trail rides

Chuckwagon rides and suppers

Rockclimbing with Sylvan Rocks

And the list goes on...

We would love to share our prized piece of these amazing Black Hills!

About Daniel Johnson

Having grown up in the southern Black Hills (Edgemont), I have looked for years for a vacation home location closer to my roots. When this undeveloped piece of land on the banks of Spring Creek became available I jumped at the opportunity to build my dream retreat in the Hills. I selected a Mandala kit home (see as the structure to build as it fit beautifully on the upslope adjacent to the creek. My plan has always been to make a separate apartment space on the lower level that I could offer as a vacation rental so I might be able to offset the expenses of this second home.

I am a semi-retired. My wife and I have four lovely daughters all of whom are out of the nest. We all enjoy the outdoors and traveling. We have used B&B's, AirBnbs, and VRBO's ourselves many times and embrace this mode of lodging as much more engaging and better value than a generic, boring hotel room.

We are excited that you are considering a visit to the Black Hills. Highmark is centrally located to easily access most of the popular parks, monuments, and attractions. After the day's activities Highmark offers a beautifully secluded creekside location to unwind and absorb the sounds, smells, and sights of our cherished locale.

Why Daniel Johnson chose Hill City

This is close to nearly everything most people love about the Hills. At the end of the day, a great place to relax and recharge.

What makes this cabin unique

This is the only Mandala Home in the Black Hills. Its unique round shape allows an interesting open floor plan where the family can converse, eat, play, and reconnect. The natural materials of wood and slate create a comfortable and cozy environment.

There is a large flagstone patio with a bistro table and chairs from which you can enjoy morning coffee and the musical sounds of Spring Creek.

Rental bicycles for the Mickelson are available in Hill City. Watercraft of all types can be rented at the Sheridan Lake Marina or Pactola Reservoir. Both are just a short drive away. These lakes have some great beaches, fishing, and boating. Finish the day with a wonderful supper at the Alpine Inn in Hill City. You may have to wait a bit to be seated but it will be worth it (especially the desserts!) Black Hills Burger and Bun in Custer has the BEST hamburgers. Really.

Nice place in a great location

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our five night stay. It was in a great location to get to all of the sights in the Black Hills. We were a little surprised to see that it is right by the highway but you could hardly hear anything so it didn’t matter. The boys enjoyed fishing right outside the cabin even though they didn’t catch too much. The water was really high. The only thing we would have liked was a gas grill. The little electric one didn’t work well.

Owner's Response: I’m glad you had a good time at Highmark. Sorry the grill didn’t work well enough for you. With the potential for forest fire in the Black Hills we are extra cautious about open flames outdoors. It’s less of a concern this year because of the copious rainfall but I’m sure you noticed the evidence elsewhere in the Black Hills of extensive forest fire damage from years past. The property owner is liable for human-caused forest fires which cost millions of dollars to battle.

We loved everything about the cabin, it was nice and cozy, fully furnished (except a washer & dryer) and we loved the creek that runs through the property, lots of room for the grandkids to play outside without being close to a road. We stayed for 9 days and loved every minute of it. We will definitely be back!

All the comforts of home, but with a much better view!

  • 5 of 5

From the very start, property owner and manager were very down to earth and easy to work with. Many times with vacation rentals you get talked down to, but not here. Being very easy to work with, and a true effort towards customer service was really appreciated. The house was very well stocked with the basic essentials, so I didn’t find myself running to the store for toilet paper, soap, etc. The space is very aesthetically pleasing with unique shapes and materials used for the construction, it almost feels like you are visiting a mythical cabin from a book, very cool.

The very first night we ate a small trout that my daughter caught from the stream in front of the house. We watched the World Cup on a nice sized living room TV. We basked by the gas fireplace. We cooked gourmet meals that would have cost an arm and a leg locally (budget restaurant options here are scarce).

This location is right in the thick of everything you could want to do in the Black Hills. You are not more than an hour away from anything which makes planning your days really fun! We loved it here and will definitely return to this spot in town he future if we come back to the area.

Owner's Response: What a kind and thoughtful review! Thank you. We are very happy that you and your family had a good experience. It was cool that you were able to “feast” on your daughters’s catch! She will never forget that. Please come again and enjoy the rest of your summer. Dan
