About Sea Cloud

Have owned the Original Sea Cloud for over 40 years and moved it to its current location in 1990. I grew up on Edisto and own a very successful real estate company. Graduated from the College of Charleston and plan to live on Edisto Forever. Enjoy sailing, yachting, jet skiing, tennis, golf..beachcombing, all outside sports.

Sea Cloud purchased this cottage in 1990

Why Sea Cloud chose Charleston Area

Edisto is a secluded barrier island with a laid back family atmosphere. I grew up on Edisto, own a real estate company here, my husband owns 2 retail stores here, where else would be better to own rental property?

What makes this cottage unique

Great family home with living room open to dining room. Cozy screen porch to enjoy sea breezes, family time, cocktail hour, or just chillin. Hugh open sundeck with lounge chairs for sunning, spacious table for outside meals, great area below for cookouts, oyster roast, crab boils, shrimp stews. Also has enclosed hot/cold shower to enjoy when coming back from beach, concrete area for kids to bike, skateboard, basketball goal for all around fun! Located 2 homes to ocean with some view of ocean but back on secluded quiet street. It doesn't get any better than this.

Guestbook comments from the owner

best kept secret

We had a great time while we were in Edisto Beach. What an adorable cottage this one is. We loved every inch of it; the sun deck, the laundry room, the outside shower, the screened porch, the perfect kitchen, the adorable family room and bedrooms, the cutest beachy decorations we had ever seen and so much more. Everything was just perfect. The weather could not have been better and the beach is awesome. We will certainly want to return again. I am ready to return now, coming back to Illinois was very hard and even though we have been back over a week, I feel my mind is still at the beach. Never before have we had such a relaxing time on vacation. Edisto Beach is very much South Carolina's best kept secret!

New Year's Eve get away

  • 3 of 5

We selected the Original Seacloud mainly because they were "pet friendly" and affordable. The cottage was clean and provided everything we needed for our 4 couples. The downstairs bunk bedroom was small for 2 adults but would be fine for 2 children. The location to the beach was convenient even though we didn't spend much time there due to the rain :(. The owners or property managers were not easy to reach...We were not given a phone number and our emails were not returned after we paid the balance due in full. It wasn't until the morning we were scheduled to leave that we were finally contacted about pet fees and keys after sending 3 unanswered emails. Our group found this frustrating to say the least. The owners or property managers did not provide good customer service in my opinion.

Owner's Response: This guest never mentioned the fact that they had THREE dogs until after they made their reservation and had to disclose it on the Reservation Agreement. We make it clear from start to finish how much the "fur-baby" fee is and that you are welcome to bring your "fur-baby" as long as you pay the "fur-baby" fee and the fee is of course per dog. You cannot bring multiple dogs to our home for the price of one. Multiple dogs require additional cleaning and additional lawn "policing". This guest was told this when they disclosed the fact they were adding three dogs and of course we do not be provide check in information to anyone until ALL fees are paid in full. They did not pay for their their "fur-baby" at that time and in fact they did not pay for them until the DAY OF CHECK IN in 3 separate payments. In fact their last payment was received at 2:30pm even though we had agreed to let them check in at 3pm (an hour early) so they could watch the Clemson game. Our private telephone number is given to all of our guests with their Check In information and this guest chose NOT to pay all of their fees until 30 minutes prior to arrival after being told their key code would not be programmed for them unless all fees were received. We handle ALL of business electronically to avoid any "misunderstandings" via conversations and have every communication of this guest on file. This eliminates ANY "but I thought you said" in our rentals and works very well. The last communication from this guest on 11:52 am on their day of check in before they had paid for any of the dogs they had added was "Thank you Richard. Sorry for all the confusion".

Disappointed.

  • 2 of 5

The house is very adorable and close to a very nice almost private beach. It is a very quiet street. The air conditioning, hot water and Internet worked fine. However, we are disappointed in the lack of amenities at the house. The ceiling fan lights in the bedrooms didn't work. The ceiling fan blades and ceilings were covered in dust. The furnace filters looked like they have never been changed. The first day we arrived, my son tried to sit on his bed and the frame came completely apart with the mattress falling down on top of the floor. The upstairs bath tub is plugged and drains extremely slowly. There are drawers, outlets and, stove top exhaust fan that just did not work in the kitchen. In general, the house is in need of a lot of maintenance. We are leaving early. Pretty much done with this situation.

Beachy and fun!

  • 5 of 5

Those are the words that come into mind when I think back (longingly!) on our vacation at The Original Seacloud.

This was just easy from start to finish. Richard and Mary apparently work 24 hours a day because every time we emailed them they emailed us back right away; mostly late at night! Everyone else we emailed didn't reply until the next day.

And the house...well it was wonderful. We went on the beach every day and let the kids just play! We brought them back and bathed them in the outdoor enclosed hot and cold shower and now they think we need one at home but we tell them that is only to be had at The Original Seacloud.

We stayed in one of the upstairs rooms; (they are all too cute!) but we stayed in that one because I just loved the saying they had engraved on the wall above the bed. I keep wishing I had written it down; can you please tell me what it was? It was along the lines of "Dance like no one is watching".

We'll be back; I hope you're open when we can come back!

Not what we expected

  • 2 of 5

I'll start with the positives- the walk to the beach is as described, and the beds are really quite comfortable, with nice soft sheets and clean comforters. The bedrooms are decorated nicely as well. The screened porches were great for relaxing, and when traffic wasn't busy, you could actually hear the ocean waves. The overall house has a cute beach themed decor. We had bad weather so we did the hour drive to both Walterboro for antiquing and Charleston for the historical tour, and both excursions were great.

Now for the negative, the worst part was hands down the bathrooms. There is one hall bath on the main floor and one hall bath upstairs (no masters), but both are very small, with no vanity space, and the bathtubs are rusted and in major need of updating. The kitchen blinds are broken so they can't be closed which on the one sunny day made the room an oven and no way to block out the sunlight during sunset. The refrigerator door was missing two of the shelf brackets so they couldn't be used at all, which with the small size of the fridge, made it crowed. The blinds in the upstairs grey bedroom were also broken, which made it impossible for sleeping in unless rigged with a sheet. On a separate note, as this was our first time to Edisto, there is only one grocery store on the island and it is packed with people, but often out of items. As for the beach, there are jetties every 50 yards so if beach walking is important, this is not the right beach for you. If you have inexperienced swimmers, there are also strong riptides and we witnessed one teenager get caught up in it and lose her swim suit- she was terrified. Having grown up in FL and living in Va Beach, I thought this was one of the uglier beaches I've ever seen, but to end on a positive, we did see some starfish and dolphins, which was awesome. We personally wouldn't come back to Edisto, but if friends were coming, we'd warn them about the beach and steer them clear of this house.
