About Zan Nix
When I am not overlooking the beautiful bay of Sayulita, I live in a small, culturally rich town, Ashland, in Southern Oregon. Home of the Oregon Shakespearean Festival, Ashland offers great theater, a vibrant arts community and lots of good restaurants! I am a realtor and also teach Psychology at Southern Oregon University. I have a passion for poetry and for being on water which are the two inspirations for my designing and building Villa Poema de Amor, Villa Love Poem.
Why Zan Nix chose Sayulita
What Makes this Villa Unique? Designed by architect, Miquel Valverdez and built by Arturo Fernandez, Villa Poema de Amor is like no other villa in Sayulita. Perched on the south tip of the bay it has exquisite views of the jungle, ocean and Sayulita Bay, beach and town. From the villa you can see all the way to San Poncho. The views are stunning. The architecture too, is unique. Inspired by my travels to Greece, the blue cupolas can be seen from most anywhere in Sayulita, right above Villa Amor. All the rooms are furnished with custom built and carved furniture and many pieces are curved like the soft rounded walls. Every detail has been thoughtfully designed and artfully made by local artisans, including hand painted sinks, hand carved furniture and mirrors, playful accents in the ceramic floors, unique and custom wrought iron railings and accents and carefully chosen art. The rounded brick cupolas in every room of the top floor, Casa Rumi, are architecturally stunning. This romantic villa was lovingly crafted with attention paid to every detail. In designing Villa Poema I wanted to reflect the romance of this exquisite location overlooking the sea, naming it Villa Poema de Amor after my two passions…love and poetry. I named each of the individual casas after poets: First floor, Casa Hafiz (Persian poet Hafiz) & Casa Lorca (Spanish poet Fredrico Garcia Lorca); second floor, Casa Neruda (Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda); and third floor, Casa Rumi (world’s most revered love poet, Persian poet, Rumi). I look forward to sharing this very special place with you and hope you will enjoy your memories long after.
What makes this Villa unique
Why Sayulita I first came to Sayulita in 2003 and fell in love with what was, at the time, a sleepy little fishing and surfing village! While Sayulita has become far more popular and discovered since then, it has always kept me in awe of its natural beauty. I still enjoy walking on the beach and all the wonderful options for yoga in town. For a small town Sayulita also has a lot going on, many activities to enjoy and nearby places to explore.

This was my first VRBO experience and my expectations were not very high but this blew us away. We rented the top floor of the property and were lucky enough to be the only ones staying in the house for our 3 night stay. We enjoyed the deck outside our room, the pool, and the pool deck and enjoyed every moment. We had rented a car and got lost getting to the hotel so Nick met us in town and we followed him back to the property and were so excited when we saw our accommodations in person. It was clean, comfortable and has spectacular views as you walk up the stairs, hang out on the deck, lay in bed or are taking a shower.
The location of the house was an easy 5 minute walk into town so once you are there you don't need a car if you are just hanging out in Sayulita.
We were a little shocked finding out you can't flush toilet paper but that was the only surprise we had (and it was our fault because we didn't read the paperwork Nick and Gabbi sent us ahead of time).
Overall, the service we received, accommodations and experience was perfection and would definitely stay here again on a future visit!
Paradise by the sea
Gabbi and Nick took amazing good care of us, from start to finish, arranging catamaran adventures, ziplining, home-cooked meal, transportation, super chilled Modela in the fridge. All we had to do was relax. August weather included thunder, lightning an amazing rainbow over the Pacific and dinner in the dark on the plaza. Villa Poema de Amor is so beautiful -- clean, comfortable and the views are nothing short of breathtaking. The on-site infinity pool has great views overlooking Sayulita, which is a great bonus. We look forward to our next trip!
Best Views ...and then some!
Gabbi and Nick - We LOVE it here. It's perfect for our honeymoon and feeds Michael's love of the ocean while allowing me, a shade dweller, to let the sun have it's way with me :). Thank you for setting us up so nicely.
As you predicted, our first evening included a fantastic thunderstorm, and everyday has unfolded to the simple pleasures close by - playa de muerte, and hidden beaches in the rocky cove alongside, a wedding across the way, an evening ritual of locals & music at the graveyard, smoothies at Villa de Amor, sunsets, uncluttered bay (no jet ski's yay!), and immersion into the local culture. Cannot imagine a more precious spot. Muchos Gracias!!!
We rented the whole place (three floors) that easily fit two couples and two singles. We were attending a wedding at villa amore, the hotel right beneath the home. It ended up being the best place of all the guests. Highly recommended, very clean, incredible views and great service. I will be staying again.
Magic on the hill above Sayulita!
Our 9 day stay in Casa Rumi, on the top floor of Villa Poema de Amor, completely exceeded our expectations! The building itself is stunning, perched on the top of the hill overlooking the ocean, at the end of Calle Vista Mar.
The rooms in Rumi are magical. All round, no square corners, each with high domed ceilings made of brick, beautiful tile work, decorative angels, with exceptional vistas of the ocean, beach and sky. From the private terrace with palapa, there are views of the jungle and nearby casas. Pretty much a 360 degree view of the surroundings. The king size bed is a Sealy Posturepedic, hands down the most comfortable bed we've ever slept on in Mexico, and has really nice linens and pillows. Waking up in it and being able to look right out at a 180 degree view of the ocean and sky was an amazing way to start our day.
The kitchenette is very nicely outfitted, with custom made dishes. There is a coffee maker, toaster, blender, micro, small but adequately sized fridge, two burner gas stove, sink and all the utensils you'll need. We were welcomed with a pound of coffee from the nearby hills and a six pack of beer.
The modern safe in the closest has electronic key pad to enter your own personal key code. We felt confident leaving our valuables in it. And we felt safe at all times in town and on the property, which is gated & surrounded by a wall topped with scary sharp pointed cutters. Caretakers Francisco and Ines live onsite, which helps with security.
The bathroom has the most spectacular view of any bathroom I've ever been in! We needed the air conditioner at night to keep cool enough to sleep, but during the day we had the windows wide open to let the breeze in. The pool downstairs is large enough for 6 or 8 people to cool off in at the same time, but we were lucky enough to have the whole place for the 2 of us for 5 of our 9 days.
Down the back steps of the villa, only a 4 minute walk through the graveyard, is Playa de los Muertos, a small, clean beach where it is safe to swim--no big undertow--and a lifeguard on duty at times.
The photos are completely accurate, but really don't do justice to the expansive beauty you'll see. The property manager, Nick was extremely helpful during the booking process and met us when we arrived and walked us through, answering all our questions. Having gushed now for all these sentences, I think I'd rather keep this place a secret, because we are already planning our return trip!
