Large, Magical Mountain Lake Cabin on Lake Keowee

Bedrooms 3
Half Baths1
Space 4,000 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Sleeping Porch, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 14)

'A Stay Away' (the phonetic Cherokee language translation of 'Cedar Creek', the branch of Lake Keowee on which the property is located) is a true Mountain Lake Vacation Home. It is a 4000 sq ft, Lindal Cedar Home with 4 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, large, open common spaces, a stone fireplace, spacious kitchen, and ample sleeping areas. The house was renovated in 2009, and the kitchen got new appliances in 2011.

In addition to two bedrooms with king beds, and one with a queen bed, there is a comfortable queen-sized swing bed (on a ceiling-suspended platform) on a sleeping porch, and a bunkroom with 4 beds. One of the king-sized rooms also has an additional set of bunk beds, and each floor has a queen sofa bed (new, firm memory foam mattresses), most comfortable for one adult or two children, of course. In addition, there is a pack-n-play for infants, and a futon mattress which can be used for extra sleeping space.

Main floor:

Master with one king

4-season porch with suspended queen "swing bed"

Lower level (daylight, walk out basement):

Bedroom #2: queen bed, private bath across the hall

Bedroom #3: king bed and bunk beds, jack and jil bath shared with bunk room

Bunk Room: 4 bunk beds

futon under master bed

2 x queen sleeper sofas (memory foam mattresses are actually pretty comfortable)

Outdoors, there is a two-level deck, with shady and sunny areas.

The dock is a double decker with a covered slip and an uncovered slip. There's also a wave runner float lift.

Mostly, you'll want to spend the days on the lake, or retreat to the quiet seclusion of the cabin itself. Aside from a rarely-occupied log cabin next door, the nearest house is across the lake! In the summer, there are many lake activities available. Many nearby activities (golf, hiking, shopping) are available.

We are *not* TV people, but there is a flat screen TV on each floor (36" and 50", I think). There is no cable in the area, but we have basic DirecTV. While there is a DVD player, VHS player, and satellite receiver, it may not be the best place for TV watching or TV watching parties (eg, sports events). Wifi is via a Verizon "Jet Pack". We have a large data plan, but we do sometimes have to purchase more data as needed for renters. (Please go easy on us with the streaming!)

The community paid a fortune to bring in county water in 2014, so all our water filters are obsolete. We still have a separate kitchen drinking water filter (RO). We think it's better than bottled.

The property is about a 30-minute drive from Clemson, SC, a 40-minute drive from Seneca, SC, 50-minute drive from Greenville, SC, and about 45-minutes from Cashiers, NC.

About Michael

We are a family of 5 who live in Greenville, SC. We work too much to enjoy the house as often as we would like. Renting it out allows us to afford upkeep and taxes (whew!). We genuinely love the thought of people up there enjoying it in our absence. We are old-school VRBOers. We do not have a professional management service, and can't always provide concierge services, but while you're guests at the house, our house is your house. Overall, we've had a very enjoyable experience as owners on VRBO. It's fun to get feedback about the great vacations on the lake!

Michael purchased this house in 2006

Why Michael chose Sunset

I grew up near Surfside Beach, SC, and my family would spend weekends there. We wanted something close by to make family memories. Love cool, clean, scenic Keowee!

What makes this house unique

The house is truly remote. Sometimes we feel like it's the only place we get away from it all. The house has a way of sucking the desire to work right out of you. The only people you're likely to see are the people across the cove. The wifi is only recently good enough to do any significant work online. Cell service wasn't even reliable until about 5 years ago. We reluctantly got TV service about the same time.

Awesome!!! Thank you...we needed this!!

Great house with TONS of room

  • 5 of 5

This is the 2nd time I and a group of 10+ friends have stayed at this house and we have been completely satisfied both times. This is just close enough to Clemson to host our annual get-together to see a Clemson home football game. Already looking forward to renting again next year.

A real treasure of a property with flexibility for small or large groups.

  • 5 of 5

This house is absolutely beautiful! There are plenty of sleeping possibilities whether you have a small group or a larger group as it could accommodate up to 14 people. Our group maxed out at 8 with mix of high schoolers, collage kids, and an elderly mother-in-law and we had no issues accommodating everyone appropriately because there are a lot of sleeping options. The house has everything you could possibly need and all you need to do is bring your food for your stay. We enjoyed everything there from the dock (huge hit with the teens and young adults), the deck and grill, the rec-room downstairs, and hanging out in the living room and dining room. There is plenty of space in this house and it is a very quiet and remote location so you should be able to enjoy it very peacefully. The renter Michael was very responsive and provided all the information we needed to ensure an enjoyable long weekend at Lake Keowee. The house is also only about 35 or 40 minutes from Clemson which makes it a very nice location for bringing the family in for a home game.

large, fun property on beautiful lake

  • 5 of 5

Three generations of our family enjoyed our stay at Michael's house for the 2017 eclipse. There was plenty for the kids and adults to do, and plenty of space to enjoy being together or off on one's own for a little down time. The lake is clear and warm and the dock is large and accessible, if you don't mind the short trek down the hill to get there. The upper deck is spacious. There is plenty of seating in the house, though fitting everyone around one table was never going to happen. The kids took to the entertainment room downstairs like ducks to water. The kitchen had a great selection of pots and pans, though extra plates and glasses would have been helpful, and the extra fridge in the laundry room was a lifesaver. Overall, the house fit our needs just fine.

We enjoyed our stay! We lived in Ashville, NC about 12 years ago and went to the north end of Lake Keowee regularly with our 3 sons then ages 3-9. We wanted to go back and revisit the area. We needed two boat slips as we are avid water skiers and wake boarders/surfers who pulled two boats from Florida. The lake has a lot more boat traffic, so rollers are a problem! We were a party of 10 (2 families- the other family of 5 are friends from Germany) so we wanted a 2-story dock for more space to hang out on ( need some deck chairs) and jump off of into the cool, clean water! There was plenty of room for all of us to eat together and play games and music in the upstairs living room. We would recommend more pots and pans, (it appears that former renters put pots and frying pans in the dishwasher which ruins them) and deeper bowls for cereal and a few more drinking glasses. A variety of bed pillows would be nice, most seemed to be feather, I would suggest latex pillows as they don't flatten out and are known to be anti-allergy and anti-dust mite, etc. Obviously, I did not sleep on every mattress but the queen beds were very uncomfortable in the downstairs bedroom and the sleeping porch, and both of these rooms were very HOT with the air conditioning on! I did inform the owner of the possible problem in the downstairs queen room. The twin beds in the bunk room were also miserable for my teenage sons. I realize this is a rental and many people do not take care of other peoples belongings and accidents of all kinds happen. So, I understand why the owners do not have better mattresses but maybe they will consider upgrading the mattresses I mentioned. The owner was accommodating and emailed or texted with me promptly. For those with boats the neighborhood boat ramp is permanently closed but it is not too far to a public boat ramp. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, the lake is beautiful, as are the surrounding areas.

Owner's Response: Of course, we always want guests to have a great stay, so this review is disappointing. Frankly, I had heartburn about these renters from the beginning, based on the tone of early communications, and had even suggested they might want to rent elsewhere. Live and learn. The home has two, powerful HVAC units. No one else has ever informed me of any poor function. I was informed of the hot room (s) after departure. The one unit was coincidentally replaced this week with a brand new Trane unit, because of age, not poor function. We regularly replace mattresses with quality mattresses comparable to what we use at home. Again, this is the first complaint about the beds mentioned. Two mattresses were replaced this summer. Bunk beds may not be a great sleep for adults or teens, agreed. Renters have been hard on cookware. Some has been replaced since these renters' stay, again without having gotten this feedback until now. We will get some "anti-allergy" pillows. The pillows at the house are very expensive, with a foam core and feather/down surrounding that. (Linens are Egyptian cotton.) Thought we had done good. : ) We may continue to have shallow cereal bowls. But we will reassess! As always, we are constantly replacing and upgrading. We genuinely enjoy knowing people are using and hopefully enjoying the house, as our schedules are too busy to spend much time there ourselves. In summary house is very nice, and we hear that frequently, yet it is a classic lake cabin, where you can come in from the lake without too much worry of messing up a museum-like palace.

Owner's Response: Thank you. It's music to our ears, especially since you stayed at the house immediately after the folks who left a 3-star review. NOTE; We do try to be responsive to needs, but don't want it to sound like the house has a concierge service--we have day jobs!

Great property, close to the Falls.

We had a great week, loved the openness of the kitchen, dining, and living room. Master suite was very nice, and the owners were very nice. Would definitely come back again.
