About Gardner or Victoria Brown

Gardner Brown is a semi-retired environmental economist, and Victoria Farr Brown is a writer of fiction and blogger for Whim W'Him dance company in Seattle (whimwhim.org/blog). They live in Seattle when not in Martha's Vineyard. Gardner has been coming to Martha's Vineyard all his life, as have our sons. Victoria first visited the island in 1964. While in Aquinnah in the summer, we stay in our old unwinterized cottage or 'camp,' built in 1954. It is 60 yards away from the 'new' house' (of this ad, built in 2207) and screened by trees and shrubs. In other seasons, when we visit the island, we stay in the new house.

Why Gardner or Victoria Brown chose Aquinnah

We built the house we are renting because our family was growing, we wanted to be able to visit Aquinnah off-season when our old summer cottage is not habitable, and we had always wanted to participate in the design of a house and life on the island year-round.

What makes this house unique

Seclusion; being part of the unique community life of Aquinnah; swimming, surfing, and body surfing, in the ocean and Menemsha pond; biking and kayaking; eating fresh seafood and farm produce, enjoying the beauty, amenities and quirks of island life.

This perfect house is well appointed with all the things you will need for a trip to the wonderful private beach or down to the pond to go kayaking. The house itself is roomy and filled with light. Sleeping areas are comfortable. The house exudes warmth and coziness.

Hillside Cottage Stay

  • 5 of 5

We loved every aspect of our stay at the Hillside Cottage. Victoria and Gardner were wonderful hosts, and the Cottage was spectacular. Menemsha Pond was a treat, especially kayaking; and the private beach was beautiful. A fantastic vacation spot--we highly recommend it!

Quiet retreat

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay. This part of the island feels more natural than the rest. There are farms near by for purchasing fresh veggies or eggs. At night all you can hear are crickets, the fresh sea breeze, and the distant sound of the waves. We enjoyed paddling around the salt pond in the kayaks. The gated beach is perfect and the type of place you typically have to battle crowds for but when we were there there were few if any people. The house was super clean and felt like home. Can't wait to visit again!

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

We spent an amazing long weekend celebrating my parents 55th anniversary. The property is beautiful, clean and as advertised. Quiet and secluded. We enjoyed the quiet time and family time together. Plenty of space to hang out together with friends and family. Great perks , the access to the private beach, which was beautiful and a very short drive. Additionally, we enjoyed the Kayaks and the beautiful pond which is only a short walk from the house. Nearby Aquinas cliffs and lighthouse which was very nice. The owners are a pleasure to deal with. Always responsive, accommodating and available to answer any questions. It was a great weekend and we look forward to visiting again. We highly recommend this property without any hesitation.

Our Favorite Place to stay ....

  • 5 of 5

Our family loves visiting MVY, and our favorite area Up Island is Aquinnah. We love the relaxed atmosphere here on the Hilltop and this house is a hidden gem! We have stayed here multiple times and hope to return again! The owners are so nice and always very responsive. They take wonderful care of their home and want others to enjoy it as well. We find we love spending time on the screened porch, or taking in the views from the roof-top deck. After spending a day kayaking from Menemsha pond to Squibnocket and back, its fun to play down on the beach then clean up in the Outdoor Shower. We love cooking seafood and the well equipped kitchen is great. The location is also very close to other great dining places should you not feel like cooking. We also value the Private Beach access that comes along with this house. It's so close and easy to get to that we would run out quickly every evening to view the Absolute best Sunset!

Great House!!!

  • 5 of 5

Terrific layout, screened porch off the kitchen a delight, 2nd floor bedroom and deck a super view, nice breezes. Very quiet, little in sight but trees, sky and water. Kitchen well equipped. Nice, quality workmanship in the house. Walk down to private dock and kayaks a plus. Good value for price. Owners are lovely and really helpful. I recommend without reservation!
