Overview

About the property

Apartment, Studio + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

This bright and spacious apartment offers a spectacular panoramic view of the ocean, town and mountains. Fully-furnished with an open-concept floor plan, it provides a relaxing environment for those looking for a quiet get-away. It offers a well-equipped full kitchen, cozy sitting area, and a king-size bed that can be easily converted to two twins. Patios to the front and side of the casita provide a great place for morning coffee, outdoor dining, and evening sunset viewing.

Casa Calera is perfect for those who are seeking a Mexican town experience that also offers privacy and solitude. Located on a hillside just above the barrio, it is off the grid for all except those few who live in the immediate vicinity. Hours passed in solitude and silence are often finally interrupted by the sounds of chickens crowing, music playing or dogs barking below, the vital sounds of Mexican life.

For those who enjoy the outdoors, the hills behind Casa Calera offer a variety of hiking paths in the unique desert landscape. If a beach sounds more appealing, great walking and world-class surfing beaches are only minutes away by car.

This small town of less than 8,000 people hosts an international population of residents and visitors who paint, sculpt, build, write, surf, perform, run businesses and enjoy nature. From Casa Calera it is just a 20-minute walk into town for fine dining, gallery browsing, shopping, and a stop at the local bookstore.

About Janet Howey

We arrived in Todos Santos quite literally by accident in 1995. Vacationing from Portland, Oregon we had planned to cycle the Cape Region over a three-week period. On the second day Janet fell off her bike and broke her arm. The nearest town was Todos Santos, so that is where we spent the next three weeks. We fell in love with the town and moved here full time a year later. After renting for 10 years we built a home and included a rental unit with it. Janet owned the local bookstore, El Tecolote, until 2011, and Gary is a retired builder/carpenter. Both are sixty-five years old.

In 2011 health issues dictated that Gary enter a care facility. Janet and Gary moved to San Miguel de Allende where such a facility is available, though Janet returns to Todos Santos for regular visits. Kate Lewis, the new owner of the bookstore, now lives in the owners' unit of Casa Calera and manages the rental unit.

Janet Howey purchased this apartment in 2007

Why Janet Howey chose Baja California Sur

It is easy to list the likeable things about Todos Santos. Physical beauty, small-town friendliness, unhurried pace, comfortable bi-cultural relations, wonderful restaurants, an evergrowing arts community. But in reality we did what so many foreigners do when they come to Todos Santos. We fell in love with it, and we don't exactly know why. It is an affair of the heart that transcends any specific reasons we can give.

What makes this apartment unique

We live just outside the barrio. Our views are spectacular-the best in town, and the largely uninhabited hills rise up behind us and offer wonderful hiking. But we are still close enough to the barrio to feel its vitality without being in the middle of it where the noise sometimes exceeds the North American comfort level. A fifteen-minute walk gets us to grocery shopping, restaurants and galleries.

i echo all the positive things that other reviewers have said here. i just spent three nights at casa calera with my family (two boys aged 2 and 4) and had a wonderful time. the casa sits atop a hill about a mile from town where you can see the pacific and town below. though it's not in the center of town it is still a convenient location. a five minute walk brings you to a market where you can find everything you'll need, fifteen minute walk takes you into town where you can feast on delicious tacos or shop for local crafts, and a ten minute drive takes you to secluded beaches bordered by swaying palms and rocky, cactus strewn mountains. the hosts were also friendly, helpful and responsive. i just got back home last night and i miss todos santos so much. can't wait to go back and will make casa calera my home when i do.

Nice surprise

  • 5 of 5

Absolute privacy for two . A wall of windows with great views of mountains and oceans.

A long room open room with Kitchen at one end ,bedroom at the other end ,couch in between. A good size bathroom with walk in shower .

A car is a must for getting to beaches ,town and turtle release.......unless you like to walk .....did not see anyone doing that.

Our host were available to answer questions.

Relaxing and comfortable

  • 4 of 5

We very much enjoyed our week-long stay at Casa Calera, especially the views out over the town and sea. Bring binoculars for getting a better look at the whales (there were lots of them during our end-of- December stay), as the ocean is probably about a mile away. I'd advise pre-loading google maps on your smartphone and closely following Janet's hand-drawn map for your first arrival - there aren't street signs up in that neighborhood. We had a Volkswagen compact sedan rental, which struggled a little on a couple of the parts, but it was do-able. A 4-wheel drive or something with higher clearance would not be out of place for getting to the house or on some surrounding roads (to the beach, for example), but a regular car will make it. Walkable to the "downtown," but you'll need a car to get to the beaches. The area around the house is so peaceful, just the occasional vehicle passing slowly by, and the dogs and lots of roosters as others have noted. The nearest roosters are about a block away, so more background noise than anything else. The neighbor dogs are very friendly (and poorly trained). A good grocery store is just down the hill, on the first paved street. The caretakers, who live in the upper unit, were very friendly and helpful. The unit is quite private as their home's entrance is up the hill. Not a fancy place, but very comfortable and we had a lovely stay.

Wonderful immaculate studio with fantastic views

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at casa calera. Being based in the community rather than the tourist area it was lovely to be with the locals who were very friendly (including the dogs!)and made you feel welcome. It's quite a steep drive up to the studio which added to the fun and the views were beautiful. We arrived to a fantastic sunset, perfect! Our three year old son particularly liked shakera the neighbours puppy that adopted him!! The studio is much larger than it looks, immaculate inside and very clean. Has a lovely Mexican feel and makes you feel like home as soon as you walk in. Hosts were very welcoming, friendly and very helpful. Thank you to upstairs! Nic Adam and Flynn xxxx
