About the property

1BR Waterview Vacation Rental Kailua-Kona, Hawaii USA

Official website. When Granma was 95, we had to move her in with us to take care of her. This left her little panabode cabin (900 square feet with a 500 square-foot wrap-around lanai) vacant. Lucky you . . . you can spend your Hawaiian vacation in this beautiful, quiet, and centrally located cabin which has just about everything.

There is a complete kitchen, a bath with tub and shower, a washer/dryer, a living/dining room, a phone for local calls, and a cable TV with DVD player. There is also a big gas barbecue, and birds for a morning alarm clock. We even left all the little nick knacks in place to make this is truly a 'home-away-from-home'.

The home is backed by a herb farm and macadamia nut orchard. It is surrounded by mac nuts, lychee, and mango, avocado, and citrus trees. If anything is in season during your stay, you are welcome to enjoy it.

The big island of Hawaii is almost 200 miles around.

As you tour the island and along the Kona Coast you can see cattle ranches, rain forests, lava fields, volcanoes, snowcapped mountains in the winter, beaches, and spectacular valleys and waterfalls.

Our cabin is located in one of the most temperate places on earth. We have over 300 excellent days a year. All of our prior guests have raved about their stay, and have vowed to come back. The Big Island has something for everyone.

Very Satisfied

  • 5 of 5

We had a great 10-day stay at Granma's cabin. It was very clean, quiet, and roomy for 2-3 people and came well equipped with all we needed to cook and enjoy Hawaii. The owner (Harry) was very nice and attentive to our needs. We would definitely stay there again if we head that way.

The perfect Big Island escape!

  • 5 of 5

This was my second opportunity to stay at Granma's Cabin on the Kona side of the Big Island. Our host, Harry, was there to meet us on arrival, and was as gracious and helpful as ever, with great suggestions on places to eat and other local activities. The "cabin" is located among lush foliage straight uphill from the Kona airport at about 1200 feet elevation, where it is cool and breezy, with a view of the ocean from up high. The cabin is just as depicted in the photos, and has a very comfy queen bed and all of the other amenities that one might need, including ceiling fans in every room, fully equipped kitchen w/ basic condiments, BBQ grill, coffeemaker, washer/dryer, TVs, Wi-Fi, beach supplies & chairs, igloo cooler, DVDs, etc. plus fresh macadamia nuts on the counter top, and a couple of Harry's cold home-brews in the fridge. Cheap gas and other shopping at Costco is 10 minutes away, and Kona main is about 10 minutes more. The cabin's location takes you out of the somewhat congested traffic around Kona, and is convenient to the other highways leading out to Waimea, the resort area, and the saddle road to Hilo. The cabin is a peaceful place to relax with a wide lanai on three sides, and very comfortable furnishings. We kept the doors and windows open (equipped with screens) to hear the birds chirping all day and a distant rooster crowing at daybreak. This cabin is the best value on the Big Island, and is in a great location with a great host and everything else you need to make a great holiday. We'll most certainly be back again soon for a third visit. Thanks, Harry!

Marvelous cabin and very well appointed. Absolutely everything that I needed. Even nicer in person!

  • 5 of 5

The open floor plan has plenty of space, with lots of comfortable places to sit and relax. Harry and Deb are fun to chat with and are quiet.

The views are extraordinary! I will definitely stay here again. And soon!

I did a bunch of cooking while I was staying here and the kitchen had everything that I needed.

The home made beer and fresh macadamia nuts were just one more bonus!

5 Star Spot - 5 Star Host!

  • 5 of 5

We happily join the list of very satisfied customers who've had the pleasure of staying in this magnificent cabin! In four years of renting vacation properties, we've found Harry to be the most thorough and attentive host yet - a very friendly and helpful quality to have if you're going to offer traveler services - but we should mention that his pix aren't doing this light and airy place enough justice, especially since the woodwork is great and the gardens on the property are also inviting.

This cabin is just about as impeccable as it gets, which is important for two reasons: one, it strongly encourages guests to rise to the occasion of maintaining order and cleanliness, and two, it's right next door to Harry and his wife so it shines with pride of ownership. The location is perfect for a variety of reasons - set in a quiet, lovely neighborhood on a hill with pretty views, accessed by a beautiful thoroughfare that's a pleasure to drive on, near the Kona Airport, and relatively close to the major harbors. This side of the island offers most of the boat tours that divers and snorkelers enjoy, all of which tend to leave fairly early, so being able to roll out of the very comfortable bed and onto the road is handy - and Harry can tell you where the good stores and restaurants are located so you don't waste your time with tourist traps.

When we go to the islands, we stay in more than one spot because driving is what John does for a living and we don't want him spending his vacation doing the same thing; it's also a good way to see as much as possible in the two weeks that we manage to get away each trip, so having convenient access is job one. Rather than get cooped up somewhere for twice the price, we find unique homes to enjoy, and this roomy cabin achieved every goal we had for our first Big Island getaway, including offering one of the better kitchens we've used (we make breakfast most mornings, need a proper sized refer, and save money on what tend to be Hawaii's generally pricey restaurants).

We could go on about this well appointed rental, from the big barbecue to the little stereo to the handy stacking washer/dryer to the quick access parking - but we'd rather just let our fellow intrepid travelers know that they can't go wrong staying at Grandma's Cabin!

Perfect cabin, location and host

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent 17 lovely days in Granma's cabin near Kona. This was our second visit to the island and preferred this location and home to our first VRBO south of Captain Cook. As we were arriving very late, we greatly appreciated Harry having purchased some wine, beer and cream for us - this allowed for a relaxing drink before bed and a good coffee on our first morning.

The location is perfect - 15 min from Kona - close to two major highways to travel around the island, and 15 min to the beaches. The elevation is equally perfect - high enough to be cool in the evenings (18C or 65F) and warm during the day (27C and 81F) - and moist enough to support lush vegetation but not rainy.

The lanai was exceptional - we dined each morning listening to the birds and looking down to the sea. The size of the lanai was such that you could seek sun or shade at most times of the day. No bugs to pester you. Beautiful trees and flowers adorned the property - cardinals, doves and many types of finches fed at Harry's feeder each day. Lovely Madagascar geckos visited each morning following breakfast.

We cooked all our meals at the cabin - the kitchen was complete - we used the stove, oven, microwave, coffee grinder, coffee maker and gas barbecue. There was plenty of hot water and we appreciated the washer dryer off the bathroom. The bed was very comfortable - this was an important feature for me.

The internet speed was fast - we both did some work each morning and the connections were excellent.

The neighbourhood was quiet and we took evening walks before dusk. The Big Island Running company was a good source for running company and running route advice. There were lots of beach supplies as well - snorkels, fins, mask, chairs, umbrellas, boogey boards, water shoes and towels.

Harry was an excellent host - close when needed and at the same time was respectful of our privacy. Harry was generous - providing delicious avocados, grapefruit, freshly squeezed lemon juice and macadamia nuts. Harry is also an award winning brewer and shared a number of his beer with us. Admittedly, I prefer dark beer - I was privileged to sample 3 different types of Harry's beer - and they were all exceptional - dark to light in colour - truly award winning.

The cabin is welcoming and comfortable and would love to make a return visit.

Perfect for our 1st Big Island Trip as a family

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cabin. It was perfect for our family of 4. We got in really late our 1st night and Harry was there to meet us with a smile. He even brought up coffee for us and cereal and milk for our kids the next morning knowing we hadn't had time to get to the store yet.

The cabin was clean, well organized and had everything you would need to cook your own meals, wash your own clothes and take beach adventures(towels, beach mats, snorkel gear, boogie boards, coolers etc.)

We enjoyed watching the bird feeder in the morning and the geckos in the evening. It was a slice of of home comfort in the middle of paradise.

Car: recommended

We are located at 1100 ft. elevation on the west side of Hualalai mountain. The Coastview sub-division is all residential. There are no streetlights which provides for dark nights and good stargazing. The cabin is on the upper back half of a half acre lushly vegetated lot that includes mac nut, papaya, mangoe, lemon, lychee, coconut trees. Guests are welcome to any fruit that is ripe for the picking. Other vegetation was planted with fragrant and or pretty in mind. The cabin also has its own drive and parking area.
