Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms , 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Sunrise Beach is just 3.3 miles from the heart of Gig Harbor with its restaurants and waterfront shops, and 15 minutes from the Narrows Bridge. The 180 degree water and mountain views are incredible from this glass front home - it is breathtaking! The Sunrise Beach enclave of 22 homes was established at the turn of the century. It was accessible only by boat until 1960. Eight homes down the beach still use the boardwalk from the old ferry landing to access their land locked waterfront summer homes.

Originally built in 1924 at the water's edge the home was recently updated. It features a beautiful kitchen with large great room all with 180+ degree views of the Puget Sound. The home has slate floors, granite counters and stainless appliances. The master and second bedrooms have a queen size beds. We list the beach house as sleeps 4 but the large comfy couch can sleep one if needed. The detached garage has futons but not for sleeping. Large bathroom with two sinks, slate double headed shower and washer and dryer. Detached large two car garage with TV/bonus area. Great getaway for the kids. The detached garage has no bathroom facilities but has futon couches, an LCD TV and XBox. The home's large wrap around deck ground level is right on the water! A separate wood pier extends over the water with 6 steps to the beach. Two outdoor covered seating areas. One covered outdoor wraparound couch right on the waters edge to enjoy the 180 degree view. The other covered outdoor couch is tucked alongside the house next to the hot tub with a view of the water and mountain. There are heated throw blankets to let you enjoy the beautiful views longer into the evenings.

At low tide there are miles of walking beaches each direction - North and South - to collect shells and other treasures. At high tide the water splashes against the bulkhead - no beach at high tide. There is an up to 15 foot tidal exchange in the Puget Sound - much more than the 6 foot tidal exchange of San Francisco Bay for example. The Puget Sound, also know as the Salish Sea, has clear 57 degree salt water teaming with wildlife. Sunrise Beach county park is a short walk north (.15 Miles) where you can take your dog off leash. The best scuba diving spot in the South Salish Sea with a 30-60 foot deep reef running 200 feet along the shore (Google search Sunrise Beach Park WA Diving). Dive boats drop divers most weekends at the reef 7 houses down - fun to watch or join.

Sunrise Beach feels like it is part of the San Juan Islands (80 miles north by boat) without being locked on a small island with no amenities (like a coffee shop, wine bar, and wonderful restaurants). Tacoma waterfront restaurants are 10 minutes away by boat and 25 minutes by car. There are many great restaurants in Gig Harbor just 5 and 15 minutes away. Eagles, seagulls, seals, sea lions, harbor porpoise, sea otter, and the occasional orca, humpback and grey whale and white sided dolphin travel Colvos passage between the beach home and Vashon Island. Kayaks and boats travel by constantly. Stand up Paddle boarders (SUP) use Gig Harbor and Sunrise Beach as a base for "paddle camping" and visit/camp dozens of beaches. You have a 180+ degree view of it all inside or outside of this beautiful home.

Large hot tub next to the water to enjoy a glass of wine while watching the beautiful sunset reflecting off of Mt. Rainier and the full moon rising shortly after. Wake up to the incredible sunrise on Sunrise Beach! Contact us through VRBO/HomeAway for more incredible photos. Your stay will be unforgettable.

About John Hodge

John and Shelley - we enjoy our beach house as much as our guests! We chose Sunrise Beach because it has it all - Great views, on the water, sandy beach, miles of walking beaches, history, close to everything. We have been in Gig Harbor since 1991 and this is an incredible property that purchased in 2005 that we love to share.

John Hodge purchased this house in 2005

Why John Hodge chose Gig Harbor

The incredible view was first documented by Captain Vancouver's 1792 expedition. There is a large historical marker from 1930 on the spot where John Sykes of the expedition made hisdrawing of Mt. Rainier in the ship's journal. This is the first drawing of Mount Rainier to be shown to the western world and it was from this spot.

Growing up in Washington State in view of Mount Rainier my whole life I find it incredible that this is the spot it was first drawn for the world by the first European explorers. The Tacoma Historical Society in 1930 matched the spot to the sketch and placed the marker. The marker says 'May 26, 1782; John Sykes Vancouver expedition sketched the bay and the mountain from this site. Aug 22, 1853; Theodore Winthrop crossed from the west passage to the Narrows. He saw the reflection of the mountain on the water and wrote: 'The Siwash call it Tacoma''. Contact me through VRBO and I will email you a picture of the marker.

What makes this house unique

The beach house is very relaxing. It is at the end of Sunrise Beach Drive so there is never any road noise. You are at the waters edge to just sit back and enjoy. The amenities of great restaurants, Costco, Albertson's, and Starbucks are just 5 miles away.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at your beach house and cannot thank you enough for your hospitality and graciousness. All the timely help you provided when we needed it remains greatly appreciated. The coziness and warmth of your cottage, especially during the "snowy" nights, were more than we could have imagined.

The overriding theme about this trip that will remain a lasting memory between my wife and I was how close our family united, due in part, to the close yet completely comfortable living and dining spaces. We enjoyed so many things together like playing Monopoly, watching movies or just reading and "scrap booking" in front of the fire. All of these things contributed to an amazingly memorable holiday vacation. A couple of other highlights were our family walks up the hill and teaching my kids the thrill of a "monster-slam" service return at the ping pong table.

We highly recommend your beach house to any family wanting to establish memories and create bonds that will last a long, long time.

Many thanks and warmest regards,

Patrick, Angela, Stephy, Dani

Heaven in Gig Harbor

  • 5 of 5

This was our 6th time at John & Shelley's piece of heaven on Puget Sound. We stayed 9 nights. The weather was great except for the fires in Oregon and Washington that obscured the view of Mt. Rainier part of the time, but the Sound was fantastic as always.

On September 6th we had a pod of 4 Orcas swim right by our house! Such excitement in the neighborhood! Thanks to John texting us, we were able to see them and get some video.

We brought our kayak this trip and kayaked in both directions along the shore and to the Harbor. Loved seeing the Osprey's dive for fish right off the patio.

If you like to walk, I'd recommend the Cushman Trail. We started at the trailhead off of Borgen and walked 3 miles out and then 3 back. It's a 6 mile trail, so you can do 12 miles if you'd like! Be ready to walk up several 8 to 10 foot grades. At least from the Borgen starting point.

We hit Tides Tavern, a favorite of ours. This time we also went to the Hub at the Tacoma Narrows Airport for some craft beer, and also to Moreso for wine and dinner. Both were great.

John and Shelley are the most responsive and attentive VRBO hosts we've ever had. They make you feel like family!

We will definitely be back again and again!

Owner's Response: Shelley and I are looking forward to having you back as guests at the Sunrise Beach house! Thank you for the great review and mentioning the Cushman Trail. Gig Harbor and Pierce County have put a lot of effort into building the trail. Gig Harbor tied in the Wilkenson Farm Park, crossed the salmon stream North Creek, and the little league fields. It is really a nice trail. One of our favorite walks is the Gig Harbor waterfront with all the boats and shops.

Beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

We love the place however we noticed that the overall cleanliness of the house needed some attention.Area in corner of computer desk had numerous spider webs indicating it had not been cleaned recently. All baseboards were dirty also.Did try to light fireplace one night following directions but had no success. Not a big deal but should be looked at.

We would rent again John.

Thank you,John Krohn

Owner's Response: Hi John, Thank you for the review. Sorry the fireplace pilot light was not on and it was difficult to start it. The fireplace is awesome as you discovered and we would like everyone to enjoy a fire lit night with the city lights reflecting on the 8 miles of open water. We were able to get it lit for you when I dropped in to light it. I will ensure the cleaners check that the pilot light is on so we don't have the issue again. We also removed the offending spider so he cannot set his web in the corner. We look forward to your next visit!

Owner's Response: Hi Scott, Thank you for the nice review. Sorry to hear that the neighbor Chris was rebuilding his garage and was loud. Chris just purchased the house next door. It is in need of maintenance and we are excited to see the new paint and yard coming together. It is usually so quiet at Sunrise Beach. I will talk to Chris about the noise. Sincerely, John
