About The Owner

Aloha I have been traveling to Hawaii and around the world for 29 years as an international flight attendant. Hawaii struck a cord with me when I first visited in 1985. I knew this was where I belonged. My husband, Jeff Noll also traveled and lived abroad having built golf courses internationally and domestically for 18 years and the past 10 years as a General Contractor licensed in the state of Hawaii and Florida. He has restored Historical Homes, renovated ones that need a little love and built dream homes for clients from coast to coast. On his first trip here he definitely shared the same sentiment that this was our destiny. To be here, nurture our lives and this land, with love, creativity and concern for the ecological future of North Kohala. It is a privilege and responsibility we relish. We look forward to sharing our bit of paradise with you.

A Hui Hou!

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2005

Why The Owner chose Kohala Coast

We had visited the Big Island over the years and North Kohala resonated instantly for us

What makes this cottage unique

The Kohala winds along with the sound of the adjacent Kohala stream makes for a very relaxing stay, whether enjoying the lush gardens, bird watching and resident ducks swim, or playing a fun game of croquet with friends in the midst of Coconut Palms, Kona Coffee, Avocado, Macadamia Nut, Kukui Nut, Papaya, Breadfruit, Fig, Lychee trees and a large variety of citrus trees just to name a few. The pineapple grove is always a surprise to visitors thriving next to giant bamboo stands, sugar cane, banana's and passion fruit vines.

The beautiful view of Maui which is enjoyed reverently during morning yoga on the Lanai is the perfect way to greet the day.

Sunset is the ideal time for a easy walk along the Kohala Stream Trail where spectacular views sweeping down over the village of Hawi and the coast you see Maui rising out of the Pacific Ocean before your eyes. The view of Mt. Haleakala on Maui bids you a sweet journey into the evening show of brillant stars drapping over you like a tent sparkling with a million diamonds so clear you think you're in a dream.

The second stay is even better!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just completed our second stay at the charming, well appointed Bamboo Cottage. A sequel does not always replicate the original, but that was not the case for us!

Once again, hosts Jennifer and Jeff exuded Aloha spirit, sharing with us the newest addition to the marvelous gardens, the pineapple patch. Wild turkeys strolled the grounds with us as we walked the property together on a pleasantly balmy evening.

Per the suggestion in another guest's property review, we took the all-day Volcano tour offered by Hawaii Forest & Trails. Excellent outfit, and our guide, Frank, is an island treasure. I highly recommend them for any off-property adventures.

Spencer Beach Park, just south of Kawaihe, is a gem of a beach, tree-lined with plenty of shade, a gentle surf and decent snorkeling in the morning before the water becomes too choppy. Also explore Manukona, a former sugar refinery and shipping port.

Perhaps the best part of our trip was knowing that we would come home to Bamboo Cottage and relax. We dined out only 5 times, twice for lunch, and preparing island-procured dinners in the small but efficient kitchen was a delight. Buy fresh fish at Da Fish House in Kawaihe (pick up poke to have as lunch at the beach!), produce at either the Hawi or Waimae farmer's market and island-raised meats and poultry at the Waimea Butcher Shop. Such a treat to see what an active local food scene has developed on the island!

We look forward to a third stay in Bamboo Cottage. It cannot come fast enough! Maholo to Jennifer and Jeff!

Beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is lovely and surrounded by beautiful gardens. Hawi is a great location to explore from and so different from the Kona area! Kitchen is well set up for doing you own meals but the shopping is limited in town. Go to Waimea for better selection and value!

We felt like we were living in a Hawaiian tropical garden. That probably was because we WERE.

  • 5 of 5

This place is definitely out of the way but that was definitely part of what we loved about it. The grounds are beautiful with flowering trees and plants that are landscaped in such a way that privacy is provided to both the owners and those on their temporary stay. And besides the ornamental plantings, the gardens provide papayas, avocados, lemons, limes, and various other yummies. Plus, we were provided with freshly ground coffee from their property. The cottage itself is charming with wonderful views from every window and the screened in porch. We also loved the town of Hawi. After just a week we were being greeted like family at The Bamboo Restaurant and everyone in town was so friendly. There are numerous eating options in this small town and first class galleries along with unique small shops. We lucked into wonderful music by a local singer/ songwriter along with a variety of musicians at Kohala Coffee Cafe on Sunday morning. Bamboo restaurant also has music Friday and Saturday nights. We also used local activity center Hawaii Forest and Trail for a waterfalls hike and swim. Mark was a terrific guide and it was great fun. They have a number of trips to offer and wanted to do their Maunakea Summit and Stars Adventure but it was already booked. (Consider booking ahead). Kohala Zipline is also located there and has many fun looking trips. Also located in the same area is the Flume Ditch rides company and it's on my list for next time. Another local activity is the Saturday morning farmers market with many fresh fruits and vegetables and flowers and baked goods and meal options along with music. There are also so many things to explore in this north Kohala area--you really don't have to leave, but it isn't all that big a deal to drive an hour or so and enjoy even more. Don't miss this very special location.

Nice place nicer people

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our week stay at the Bamboo Cottage. The cottage was very comfortable and laid out nicely. The outdoor shower was an added bonus😍. We appreciated the guided tour Jennifer took us on and the pride she had in the gardens. The garden is fabulous especially considering it is only 11 years old.. Jeff also gave us lots of info about the Kohala Ditch and local history. It rained a bit but when headed south the weather turned sunny in less than 6 miles. What a treat our stay was in the cottage. Thank you for sharing your piece of paradise with us.😎

Tranquil, peaceful, invigorating and renewing

  • 5 of 5

The heavy sigh you exhale as you arrive at this lush, verdant property is only the first of many you will experience while staying at Bamboo Cottage. "Can this really be our home for our stay?", you will ask, after another relaxing sigh. Yes! This wonderfully appointed and beautifully situated cottage will become your home, and the charming village of Hawi will become your hometown.

Jennifer and Jeff are the most welcoming and accommodating of hosts. Fruit from their trees - lemon, orange, grapefruit, avocado - graced our the kitchen counter when we arrived. Jennifer showed me where to pluck some ginger root, which I used in a vinaigrette on island greens one evening when we chose to dine-in. The kitchen is small but incredibly efficient (I am a culinary professional and this was, by far, one of the best kitchens I've ever cooked in. And the view does not hurt, either!). Shop at the Hawi farmer's market on Saturday for island produce, fruit and other goodies and enjoy a night or two on the lanai after preparing your own dinner!

The town of Hawi is funky, fun and friendly with an island vibe you are not likely to find anywhere else. Bamboo is a favorite restaurant of ours and if you are lucky, local son and slack key guitar virtuoso John Keawe will be playing there. Sushi Rock rocks, too!

It does rain frequently in North Kohala, and the wind can be blustery at times, but just sit on the lanai, read a good book, listen to birdsong, watch the clouds, and catch a glimpse of Maui across the channel. This will make for a special time on a special island, in a very special place, the Bamboo Cottage.

We look forward to our next stay at our home away from home!

Aloha!

Like a 5 Star Hotel!

  • 5 of 5

This place was wonderful and was way beyond my expectations. The kitchen is fully equipped and there is a super nice outdoor shower. Everything, towels, linens and etc are perfectly clean and new. Plus, it's bigger than it looks on pictures. My recommendation is: Don't miss this place if you are visiting hawi :)

by the way, there are even sets of fins and snorkels which you can use.
