First a word about Hurricane Helene and the heroic recovery efforts. Helene struck western NC in the early morning of Sept 27, devasting the villages of Chimney Rock and Bat Cave, and doing major damage to the Town of Lake Lure and the lake itself. Our dock and boathouse containing two boats were completely washed away. An absolutely herculean cleanup and recovery effort have allowed Chimney Rock Village, Chimney Rock State Park, and the Town Of Lake Lure to reopen to the public. Lake Lure itself is expected to reopen for public use in May of this year (2026). We plan to reopen our vacation rental, Five Oaks Cottage, May 1, 2026. A new dock with upper lounging deck have been completed, and are awaiting the arrival of guests. We hope to see first-time visitors as well as old friends from years past returning to enjoy beautiful Lake Lure and observe the changes wrought by Helene. Now back to the description of the guest cottage.
Five Oaks is a cozy one-bedroom lakeview guest cottage situated on beautiful Lake Lure. It is the perfect spot for a romantic relaxing getaway vacation for two, or for a couple with one or two small children who can be accommodated on the hide-a-bed sleeper sofa. Lake Lure is nestled in the groove of Hickory Nut Gorge 25 miles southeast of Asheville, NC. It was named by National Geographic as one of the ten most beautiful man-made lakes in the world. Several movies, including Dirty Dancing have been filmed at Lake Lure. A wide variety of outdoor activities can be enjoyed in and around the lake, including swimming, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and hiking.
Five Oaks Cottage was built in 2005 and is tastefully decorated and equipped with a full kitchen and bath with shower. We supply linens, towels, and hygiene products for our guests and an information booklet listing local activities and attractions to help make each guest's stay both memorable and enjoyable. Guests have full access to the dock and boathouse rooftop deck for swimming, fishing, lounging, and enjoying the spectacular views of the lake, the gorge, and Chimney Rock Park. A canoe and a kayak are available for your use.
The guest cottage is situated behind the main house and has lake views from most windows and from the attached deck. The cottage is therefore not lakefront, but rather lake access. The boathouse and dock are about 150 feet in front of the cottage. About 15 stone steps lead down to the ground level of the main house. A stone pathway then leads you around the house. Another 12 steps will take you to the rooftop deck atop the boathouse, and another 15 steps will take you down to the dock at water level. Having to negotiate steps down to the water is the norm at Lake Lure because it is a mountain lake and the shoreline is steep. There are very few lodgings on Lake Lure that do not require the traversing of many steps to reach water level. Five Oaks Cottage has fewer steps to the water than many. Still, it may not be suitable for older folks or those with disabilities.
The cottage is equipped with wireless internet, a TV with several streaming networks including Sling, Netflicks, Prime, Discovery+, and Peacock. Five Oaks is the cottage where the author/owner conceived and wrote the popular series of three children's books called The Lake Lure Chronicles, a full set of which are on display in the cottage for you to enjoy. We believe you will thoroughly enjoy your stay at Five Oaks and will create many lasting memories of this most beautiful and peaceful place.
