Why Luis Alfonso Melendez chose Catedral
My father, Luis Alfonso, and his two sisters, Rosa and Isabel, spent their early childhood in Old San Juan. Their house was in the Caleta de las Monjas until their departure to France in the early 1970's. In 1985 their father, the late painter Alfonso Arana, returned to buy this house in Calle San Jose and it became the family home. It is a beautiful building with the patio on the ground floor and beautiful terraces upstairs. My grandfather used to call it 'his Palace'.... In 2009, my father and his siblings, decided to open the house for guests, and furnished the downstairs apartment for vacation rentals. My father lives on the 2nd and 3d floor of the house, my aunts reside in Massachusetts and in Connecticut. We love our Old San Juan home and hope you enjoy your stay there.

Epic Old San Juan
Staying here had a care-free feel. It has a ceiling fan, but no air conditioning. You can leave the doors of the bedroom open, if you wish, while you sleep. You can eat at the kitchen table or enjoy eating outside in the patio. This place is located in the center of it all. Most of the attractions in Old San Juan is a walking distance. I actually walked a couple of miles to the beach in Condado area. It was great to walk and sight-see at the same time. I took wonderful pictures on my way to the beach. The owner of the place is very friendly and is always available in case you have any questions. I would do it all over again!
Wonderful base for soaking in Old San Juan
The apartment is exactly as shown in photos/description. The best features - location, the owner (Luis Alfonso is a warm personality with great recommendations) and the architecture of the apt (gorgeous). The kitchen is simple but has everything needed to cook meals. The bedroom and bathroom area is beautiful with the arches, lots of art and access to the inner patio. It was fairly hot and humid during our stay (early July) so the ceiling and box fans came in handy to cool off a bit at night. We wanted to start our vacation in PR with a couple days in Old San Juan to soak it all in - the forts, the beautiful balcones, the brightly colored buildings.... this was a warm inviting base from which to explore the city. And it kicked off our vacation perfectly!

Great time in old San Juan
Great location, beautiful courtyard and perfect for your time in San Juan.
Great location, comfortable, roomy apartment
The location in Old Town San Juan was perfect to get around easy. Luis was very helpful about places to go and answering every question. A nice place to stay for a taste of authentic Puerto Rico. Comfortable with all your basic needs. Courtyard wonderful for relaxing and cooling down all times of the day.
Our apartment is on calle San José, the entryway of which is a gallery space of local artists. Around the corner you will find the Cathedral and the City Hall. It is one block from the main square Plaza de Armas, where you can find a supermarket and open air cafes, wonderful restaurants and bakeries. We are very near the 16th century fortress El Morro and a 20 minute walk to the Escambron Beach.
