If you are looking for a quite peaceful refreshing get away...you have found it. This is a wonderful little bunk house. Cozy...intimidate...wonderful. We spent a week there last fall and enjoyed each day of the color changes. Even though the only bedroom is upstars ... thse old legs made it.

Stay on a Real Colorado Ranch

  • 4 of 5

We booked this ranch bunkhouse for a week in early October. Gary and Laurianne were very gracious hosts and provided us with local information on photographing fall color and wonderful San Juan Mountain scenery.

The bunkhouse is comfortable and has AC for hot days, baseboard heat and a fireplace. There is also an outdoor fire pit. This is located on a large working ranch with expansive views in all directions. It's dark at night! Gravel road access and beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

Drawbacks? If you like to stay in touch with "the folks back home" you may have to do what we did; take a morning trip to the Coffee Trader in Montrose (12miles) where WIFI is available. AT&T cell service is very poor if any. There is no WIFI available.

We had to bring cash for the rent due to all payments are made directly. The bed is upstairs in a sleeping loft and the stairs are very steep with very shallow treads. I slept downstairs... I didn't want to chance a fall on the way down (being a big guy with size 14 shoes) the stairs were not an option.

Would I stay again? You bet... It's rustic and comfortable. They offer horseback rides and just being in the ranch atmosphere felt like the real Colorado I wanted to see!

Nice relaxing location very close to the Black Canyon

  • 5 of 5

Nice mature couple that have a very cute working horse ranch in a beautiful valley near the Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park, in western CO. If you want to just sight see, relax, go for hike, or you want to go horse back riding the owners will work with you. Talk with them about the area, they know the western CO well and can recommend some nice day trips after you check out the Black Canyon NP (You have to see this park, it's beautiful). The cottage is a rustic western style, and it's clean. There is a nice loft bed room, full kitchen and bathroom /shower on the main floor. The cottage is really made for two to four people only for a stay in our opinion. They have a nice dog, some chicken's, goats and horses that the owners tend to on the ranch. Don't worry the animals are all in fenced off areas on the ranch. Their ranch is also close to Montrose, CO, so your close to that town's amenities. Great location and nice value for our long weekend. Huge bonus, the owners are very nice folks!

They Don't take VISA ???

  • 1 of 5

They don't take VISA and won't let you book through the VRBO website, and I had to send them a check. Well I was OK with that even though it seemed so archaic. The problem arose when they discovered they had double booked my stay with someone else. They notified me one day before my arrival, while I was already on vacation. This was a HUGE problem for us, it was labor day weekend, so now I had to stay in hotels that double the rate for the holiday weekend. So make sure they have your stay confirmed, they told me everything was set and I sent the check, only to be notified no you can't stay with us, and it wasn't even an option as to who would get to stay there, we were out and they were apologetic but please get with the program and start allowing customers to book through VRBO website and take charge cards !!!!! This mistake cost me over $400 in additional hotel stays !!

Senior Couple

  • 4 of 5

Our three-day stay at the Black Canyon Cabin was the perfect beginning to a break from the noise and hustle of our city life. Having grown up on farms and recently moved from a rural acreage, we had the best of it all - the wide-open valley vistas, intoxicating aroma of newly-mown hay, absolute quiet at night (except for the rutting elk and singing coyotes), beautiful dark skies for star-gazing - all without any of the personal hard work of maintaining a ranch. The hosts were readily available when we had questions or wanted sightseeing suggestions. Our privacy was respected at all times even with maintenance on the cabin being planned and scheduled. The cabin itself was comfortable, well-supplied, and nicely decorated with Western decor. It instantly felt like home.

Can't say enough about this area of Colorado with the beautiful Black Canyon of the Gunnison park, delightful shops in Montrose, and while we were there the once-in-a-lifetime fall colors of the aspens. Plenty of opportunities for day trips away from the cabin. Three days didn't begin to be long enough. We would definitely stay again and recommend it to our family and friends.

Thank you for getting our vacation off to a perfect beginning.

Perfect for a Couple or Small Family

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed for 6 nights at the ranch and were happily surprised on all accounts. Gary and Laurie Ann were perfect hosts. They checked-in with us offering advice on hikes in the area while giving us privacy every night as we had a campfire. If you plan to visit Gunnison Nation Park, it is very close and an easy drive. We not only visited the national park but also drove to Crested Butte, Telluride, and Oray for more advanced hikes. If you are interested in using the cabin as a home base it is perfect. Or you could stay on the ranch and take in the wildlife.
