About Wolfgang, Martine Schachenmayr
I am a resident of L.P. for over thirty years, former hotel owner, now retired. I live in town and enjoy the outdoors in the Adirondacks very much when I am not traveling. (Please note you always can contact me via email when I am away from home)
Wolfgang, Martine Schachenmayr purchased this House in 1980
Why Wolfgang, Martine Schachenmayr chose Lake Placid
When I purchased this property on Mirror Lake in 1980 it was one of the few remaining properties left on Mirror Lake. I developed the than undeveloped land at that time.

Incredible location and layout
My family and my sister’s family met here for a long weekend. The property is only 10 minutes to Whiteface and we had a great few days skiing. The house was right on Mirror Lake, which was frozen, so we were able to skate and walk across the lake to get coffee from the picturesque Lake Placid Main Street. People dog sledding and playing hockey on the lake added to the charm.
The house is a great size with nicely separated bedroom areas that provided very comfortable sleeping arrangements for us all. The kitchen and dining areas were well-equipped and provided great space for preparing and sharing family meals.
The focal point of the main living area was a large fireplace surrounded by floor to ceiling windows overlooking the lake and not a TV (which we loved) providing an optimal space for cocktails, cards and conversation after a tiring day on the mountain.
A loft area with comfortable couches provided another great space to relax in, and the loft TV allowed us to get our Winter Olympics fix at the end of each evening.
All in all, we now have family memories to cherish because of our unforgettable experience at a fantastic property in an absolutely gorgeous town.
I am glad Kevin and his family enjoyed their stay at the Lake House and took advantage of the many activities offered in Lake Placid.
They were very respectful of the house, left it in excellent condition, and also posted a lovely note in our guest book.
We would love to host Kevin and his family again. Very kind and considerate people!
This house is a delight! It is in the perfect location, facing west for afternoon sun and just across the lake from the village of Lake Placid. It was lovely to sit on the dock at night, looking across the lake at the lights, mirrored in the lake. There is also a sidewalk that goes around Mirror Lake (3 miles around). We loved walking to lunch in the village - only 20 minutes from house. Be sure to eat at The Cottage, great food on a deck next to lake. The house is lovely with great views across the lake. It is beautifully decorated and has everything you need for a truly wonderful visit. We stayed at the house the middle of September. The days were warm and sunny and the nights were very cool. We hiked everyday on the forest trails in the Adirondacks. Our hikes included The Nubble, Cascade Mountain, Ampersand, Rooster Combe and Avalanche Pass/Lake. We highly recommend this house.
Thank you for your nice review. I am glad your enjoyed your stay at the Lake House, appreciated what our little town has to offer, and had the opportunity to hike our beautiful Adirondack mountains. It would be our pleasure to be your hosts again at the Lake House.
We recently had the pleasure of staying at Wolfgang and Martine's Lake House. Everything was exactly as advertised and then some. Pristine condition, modern, spacious, comfortable. The house has plenty of space to gather as family or friends as well as great places to retreat for quiet. We had great weather, but if it had rained, there is enough to do in the house to keep people occupied. We had a dog and a small child and was very comfy and manageable. The location is hard to beat....2 minute drive to town or a nice walk. We enjoyed the kayaks and fire pit as well as just sitting on the dock. Wolfgang and Martine were great to work with and easily accessible for questions while we were there (how to operate TV, heat, etc). We hope to come back many times and would be hard-pressed to look at another place to stay. It felt like home for the week that we were there.
Our home in Lake Placid
Our family has stayed at this home since 2001, most summers for two weeks. Our boys and their cousins learned to love the Adirondacks and Lake Placid from our many trips. We have rented other homes (since 1987,) but once we found Wolfgang, we came back to this home.
Wolfgang has been extremely welcoming, and is an excellent host. We met Martine this year as well, both work well with renters.
The home is on Mirror Lake, a clean lake with no motors allowed. Swimming off the dock is enjoyable. The town of Lake Placid is an easy walk. Concerts in town can be heard at the house.
The home is well equipped for a family gathering, with a large dining table and great kitchen and gas grill. We enjoyed s'mores at the fire pit, caught fish from the dock, had morning coffee in the Adirondack chairs on the dock, climbed a couple of small mountains, gathered blueberries and watched our son become an Ironman this year. Our crowd was small compared to some years, but since the house is on the Ironman route for bike and run, it was perfect.
The layout for bedrooms work well, with two on the second floor, one on the main level and two on the ground level. We enjoy the deck (with many flower pots) for meals, reading and watching the lake.
Perfect spot for a family getaway in Lake Placid!
My family has stayed at Wolfgang's house several times over the last few years, and there are several reasons why we keep coming back!
-Location, location, location: Right on the shores of Mirror Lake, steps away from swimming and paddling in the summer months and skating or skiing in the winter. In the summertime, take a leisurely paddle across the lake on Tuesday nights to listen to free concerts in Main Street's Bandshell Park! The Mirror Lake Walk is also just up the driveway - an easy 2.6 mile cruise around the lake to stretch your legs. (Sidenote: this is also PERFECT for teenagers/ non-drivers as they can walk in to Main Street solo.) Restaurants and shopping are within walking distance and grocery stores are less than a 5 minute drive. About 15 minutes to Whiteface Mountain.
-Rustic charm, yet spacious: The open floor plan is great for families! Lounge in the upstairs TV nook while still being able to hear conversations from the downstairs living room, kitchen, and dining room. Plenty of space for family gatherings, and the first floor is wheelchair accessible (I forget if we brought a ramp for the slight step up from the front door to the foyer or if one was provided....). While there are cozy nooks stashed all over the first floor, the area still feels spacious thanks to soaring ceilings and a gorgeous spiral staircase leading to the TV nook and upstairs bedrooms. There are three decks, one on each level of the house. From the ground floor living room and bedrooms, you can walk right out the door to the dock!
-Comfort and convenience: As we've stayed here several times, I've slept in all of the beds in the house (and some of the couches....), and can vouch that they are SUPER COMFORTABLE. The 3 bathrooms are large and practical. The kitchen is well-equipped and comfortable; particularly love the table in the middle where you can either prep food or hang out and bother whoever is cooking :)
-Separate living quarters (if wanted): There are two bedrooms, a full bathroom, and a living room on the ground floor of the house, which our family has alternately used as the "teen zone" or for couples wanting a bit of privacy from the rest of the group.
-Easy communication with owner/managers: Wolfgang makes sure that there is always someone available to help out with any questions or concerns that may arise during your stay. If he is abroad, then he leaves contacts for his family members or caretaker, all of whom are also wonderful!
Thank you so much B. for your detailed and lengthly review

Snow shoeing trails readily available.
You can built your own ice ring/snow castle on the lake in front of home and watch the children and the stars from the fire pit
