About Mary Frances
My family began visiting the Banner Elk area when I was a child, and my parents looked for the perfect piece of propety for over ten years. They built this cabin is 1979 as a family retreat to escape the south Florida heat. It was my father's dream to have a Lincoln-log style cabin where he could fish. My parents found this property in which consists of 17 acres on top of a mountain, and knew it was what they had been waiting for. It became a center for all of us to gather for celebrations, family reunions and weekend retreats. After he retired, they needed to reduce their expenses, and I had heard about VRBO and suggested we try it. I now have come full circle as I have watched my children grow up enjoying the cabin and discover the area. Both of them caught their first fish in the pond. We have a catch and release policy; however; there is an exception for whenever anyone catches their first fish! Every time we go, I think, I need to come here more often and there is always something new to do and see. I hope you will enjoy it as well and make a memory with your family.
Mary Frances purchased this Cabin in 2005
Why Mary Frances chose Banner Elk
Banner Elk has the highest elevation of any city in the southeastern United States which means it is cooler than most other places. The cabin is on top of a mountain, and we use the blankets on the bed year round. We have enjoyed all four seasons in Banner Elk and the chance to relax and enjoy the magnificent scenery from the front porch or the sunroom. You can be as active as you want at there is rafting, golf, hiking, zip-lining, mining for gold, canoeing, fishing and all sorts of cultural events just minutes from the cabin. Frankly, we often find ourselves content to stay on top of the mountain, sitting in the swings, reading, fishing in the private pond, or just taking a break from the routine of life..
What makes this Cabin unique
The cabin sits on seventeen acres on top of a mountain, overlooking the pond and pastures. Many times I have looked out the window to see deer looking in at me. We also have turkeys, foxes that roam the property (you might draw a bear if you leave your trash outside so PLEASE don't). Children love to pick the apples and pears in late summer and fall. Beautifully landscaped, Mountain Laurel and Hostas bloom to add to the beauty of the setting. A stacked stone wall runs along the 1500 foot private drive that leads you to the cabin. Every time I drive up to the top, I am amazed at the beauty and with the serene setting.

Great house and trip!
We had a great trip to Banner Elk- we had planned to do some snow tubing, but the weather was too warm! We still had a great time- grandfather mountain, gem mining, a little fishing in the pond and watching our little guys run around that front yard (and the whole house!). House was as described, offered lots of room for two couples and two toddlers. Kitchen was well equipped with pans and baking sheets to cook with. We loved the front porch rockers and view from the front of the cabin. We would definitely rent this cabin again in the future or recommend it to anyone. Mary Frances was extremely easy to work with and text a few times checking in, which we appreciated.
Great home & property, very helpful owner
We had a great friends reunion at Mary's house near Banner Elk. The log cabin is very nice, and the sunroom is awesome! The house was great for our group; 2 big bedrooms and 2 smaller ones worked for our group. There is also a unfinished basement that doesn't show up in any pictures but is great for drying ski clothes and packing/unpacking the cars.
When the weather cleared up and we were able to spend time outside, it was great to be outside in the yard (we didn't make it to the pond).
Mary was a great host! Before approving the booking, she called to make sure we had AWD in case the weather was bad because they have a steep driveway. She went to great lengths to lend us a Pack n Play so we wouldn't have to travel with ours. She was very communicative - through email, call and text - which made it very easy to ask her questions.
The group was very happy with the house and we'll be back if we go ski near Banner Elk again.
Thank you! I hope y’all return.
Great family cabin in beautiful setting and perfect location. Loved it!
Owner/host was very communicative and helpful. The cabin was gorgeous and as expected/described. The setting and views from the cabin are incredible and the location is perfect - VERY convenient to Banner Elk and to Beech and Sugar Mountains. Perfect cabin for a family. There is a ample space and the kitchen is very well stocked which we definitely appreciated. We stayed here for a week and had a great experience. Would return! Thank you!
Wonderful and Magical Experience!!! Beautiful and Breathtaking!!!
My family had such an amazing time in Banner Elk :) Beautiful Mountains and wonderful amenities, and such an Amazing Cabin :) So very much to do :) We made so many magical memories :)
Our 2nd Visit - And We Will be Back!
This was our second visit to the cabin and we loved it again. Mary Frances is a kind, accommodating hostess and makes things easy for us. The big sunroom in the back of the house is so wonderful- room for the kids to play and plenty of seating for adults. I love that there is no tv in that room. We will return! Great place to stay.
Awesome Cabin on a Hill!
Our family had a great stay, the cabin was very cozy and comfortable. The dogs enjoyed the yard so much they didn't want to come inside. The kitchen was well stocked and the beds were comfortable. We played games at night in front of the fire! Overall one of the best trips we've had in a while. We'll definitely be back.
Thank You Mary Frances!
