This ten room SMOKE-FREE cabin includes four bedroom, two full bathrooms and is Lincoln Log style. The cabin is anything but rustic as the kitchen appliances are new, has internet access as well as free Wi-Fi. You can feel your blood pressure start to drop as you drive up the winding private landscaped driveway. Located on 17 acres and secluded on top a mountain, the cabin overlooks a valley and horse pastures. A stream runs thru the property and has a pond that comes complete with a fishing dock and gazebo. The house is near trout streams for the fly fishing enthusiast. If you don’t fish, relax in the magnificent sunroom and enjoy the panoramic mountain view, or enjoy sitting on the covered front porch in the rocking chairs and enjoy the mountain view while watching the hummingbirds, deer, turkey and other wildlife.

All of your guests will enjoy their privacy as the cabin has 2200 square feet of covered living area, ten rooms and comfortably sleeps eight. There is a bedroom on the ground floor which has a queen size bed. Upstairs, there are two master bedrooms with king size beds while the fourth has a trundle bed. It is perfect retreat to comfortably accomodate two families. There is a full bathroom on each floor. This cabin has Satellite TV in the living room, DVD in the sunroom and lots of special features including a ramp entry, custom wormy chestnut cabinetry, hardwood floors downstairs and carpeting upstairs, exposed beams, luxurious bath towels and linens, washer/dryer, a covered parking area and more. When the weather is cool, sit in the living room, enjoy the wood burning fireplace and toast marshmallows or sit in the sunroom and watch the colors of autumn unfold. There is a cabinet in the sunroom which is filled with board games, and there is a dollhouse which will delight the younger members of your group.

Escape the heat as this cabin is 4200 ft. above sea level and located in Banner Elk, which has the highest elevation of any city in the Southeast. In the fall, the temperature starts to drop but not to worry as there is baseboard heat and you can set the thermostat in each room to your liking. There are lots of activities nearby including rafting, canoeing, snow skiing, fishing, rock climbing, zip lining, mountain biking, gem mining, and hiking. Pick blueberries and blackberries in season or pick apples or pears from the fruit trees on this unique property. Four wheel drive, chains or all wheel drive is required in winter conditions. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity!

About Mary Frances

My family began visiting the Banner Elk area when I was a child, and my parents looked for the perfect piece of propety for over ten years. They built this cabin is 1979 as a family retreat to escape the south Florida heat. It was my father's dream to have a Lincoln-log style cabin where he could fish. My parents found this property in which consists of 17 acres on top of a mountain, and knew it was what they had been waiting for. It became a center for all of us to gather for celebrations, family reunions and weekend retreats. After he retired, they needed to reduce their expenses, and I had heard about VRBO and suggested we try it. I now have come full circle as I have watched my children grow up enjoying the cabin and discover the area. Both of them caught their first fish in the pond. We have a catch and release policy; however; there is an exception for whenever anyone catches their first fish! Every time we go, I think, I need to come here more often and there is always something new to do and see. I hope you will enjoy it as well and make a memory with your family.

Mary Frances purchased this cabin in 2005

Why Mary Frances chose Banner Elk

Banner Elk has the highest elevation of any city in the southeastern United States which means it is cooler than most other places. The cabin is on top of a mountain, and we use the blankets on the bed year round. We have enjoyed all four seasons in Banner Elk and the chance to relax and enjoy the magnificent scenery from the front porch or the sunroom. You can be as active as you want at there is rafting, golf, hiking, zip-lining, mining for gold, canoeing, fishing and all sorts of cultural events just minutes from the cabin. Frankly, we often find ourselves content to stay on top of the mountain, sitting in the swings, reading, fishing in the private pond, or just taking a break from the routine of life..

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin sits on seventeen acres on top of a mountain, overlooking the pond and pastures. Many times I have looked out the window to see deer looking in at me. We also have turkeys, foxes that roam the property (you might draw a bear if you leave your trash outside so PLEASE don't). Children love to pick the apples and pears in late summer and fall. Beautifully landscaped, Mountain Laurel and Hostas bloom to add to the beauty of the setting. A stacked stone wall runs along the 1500 foot private drive that leads you to the cabin. Every time I drive up to the top, I am amazed at the beauty and with the serene setting.

The cabin is near two ski resorts, Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain which are main attractions in the winter. During the summer and fall, there are often festivals during the weekends. Grandfather Mountain is always a treat to visit as you can enjoy the views, visit the natural animal habitats, hike, or if you are feeling brave, venture to the top of the mountain to cross the swinging bridge. No visit would be complete without stopping at the Mast Store in Valle Crucis which is a General Store which dates back to Revolutionary times. The town of Banner Elk has two parks. One which is near the fire station and has a playground and walking trails. During the summer there are open air concerts where visitors bring picnic baskets and enjoy free concerts under the stars. The other park has a large pond (or a small lake depending on your viewpoint). White sand has been trucked in to create a white sandy beach and there is a nearby playground. Rafting trips are offered as well.

Beautiful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

What a pretty place to call home for a long weekend! Got together with family to go hiking and spend quality time together. Great location close to a lot of beautiful trials. Cozy and charming - it felt like staying in a family member’s home. The sun room in the back of the house was so peaceful surrounded by trees! It was our favorite place to sit and chat or play games. Front porch swing was also nice! Kitchen was stocked with pots and pans and items we needed for cooking and beds were comfortable. Mary Frances was so helpful before and during our stay with suggestions of where to visit. Would stay here again for sure!

Perfect stay

  • 5 of 5

Mary Frances’ property was perfect. Exactly like the pictures and the bed is super comfy. We enjoyed sitting on the front porch and listening to the quiet. Though we were only there for two nights, our stay was perfect. I have absolutely no complaints and will definitely try to come back. I would recommend Mary Frances’ place. She was on top of everything and very professional. I’d give my stay 5 stars! Thank you!

Wonderful property

  • 5 of 5

The property was just as advertised. We enjoyed our trip to Banner Elk, and especially looked forward to winding down each day at Mary’s cabin. Great amenities and especially liked that the property had WiFi. Great communication from Mary, and we had no issues. I would suggest maybe building a fire pit, for nighttime fun, other than that, nothing to gripe about.

Nice,quite place. We'll be back.

  • 4 of 5

Great place to get away from the noise. I love the location and view. The house was very clean and well kept. Everything worked as it should and we really enjoyed having a walkout basement for our pet. Never had to bring pet upstairs at all. The only surprise to me being from SC was that the house had no Air Conditioning. With the cool mountain temperatures this is not uncommon and not really needed, just know that using fans in the windows make the house feel damp and humid.

Owner's Response: As mentioned in the property description, we have baseboard heat and do not have air conditioning which is common for the area as it is not needed. My family was originally from Florida, and my parents built the cabin to escape the summer heat. The cabin sits on top of a mountain, and we enjoy cool temperatures and virtually no humidity. We do have overhead fans in each bedroom and sleep with the windows open in the summer. The mornings can be pretty cool even in August as there is often a morning mist, and we often use the quilts. Thank you for the recent referral and glad you had a good time!

Lovely place

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed the cabin. We stayed in mid July and the weather was awesome (lows in the 60s, highs in the 70s, MAYBE tickling 80 on occasion). Due to an issue off property, the power went out (an area outage - not a property issue). Mary Frances was very responsive, called the power company for us and gave updates as she could. As it turns out, the power company got the problem fixed within a couple hours. The front porch was a wonderful place to sit in the dark, have a beverage and talk until the power came back.
