It is an extraordinary 6300 square villa located in Akumal, built overlooking beautiful Yalku lagoon. This villa was designed with floor-to-ceiling glass windows in order to completely take in the natural beauty of the surrounding area.
The villa’s spacious 900 square feet living area creates the illusion of being outdoors by means of its interior garden, 15 feet ceilings and its floor-to-ceiling glass windows. The décor is minimalist yet classy, making the most of the living space and giving it a bright and airy feel. The dining room has mesmerizing views over the lagoon and a large table that can seat up to 12 people. The fully equipped modern kitchen will allow you to prepare fabulous meals for all your party. Alternatively, kick back and have a meal cooked for you by one of the house staff.
Villa Gauguin has five air conditioned bedrooms, all with fabulous views of the ocean or mangroves. Each has a full bathroom en-suite, lots of closet space, and a private balcony. The downstairs bedroom has a queen bed with private view to the villa’s interior garden. There are a further 4 bedrooms upstairs, 3 of which have breathtaking views of the lagoon. The first bedroom is the Master bedroom with a king-size bed, walk-in double closet and a large en-suite bathroom. The 3 other bedrooms all have 2 queen-size beds. On the same floor, there is a TV room equipped with a large size TV, DVD, player, home theater and spacious sofas. The exterior area overlooking the ocean is spectacular, with its infinity-edge pool and Jacuzzi, giving directly onto the crystal clear waters of Yalku Lagoon. Villa Gauguin is a truly unique holiday home!

We had a great time at Villa Gaugin for our 10 day trip in April 2016, and everything was just as we hoped. This would be a great choice especially if you have a large family or group and are into the contemporary design of the house and furnishings vs. more typical palapa-style rentals.
- The house is extremely spacious (actually even bigger than it seems in the photos). There was a LOT of room for our 9 guests, two couples and 5 kids, and it would certainly not have felt crowded at all to have another couple guests.
- The location is perfect for snorkeling into the Yal Ku lagoon -- no need to walk or drive and there are restaurants and activities nearby.
- The water directly in front of the house was also fairly well protected so it was usually calm enough for swimming except in very high winds
-The pool was always nice and is sized well for kids to play in.
- The kitchen is well set up and has a higher grade of materials than many others. We did our own cooking and it all worked well.
- The house was kept very clean by the on-site caretakers.
- The cell phone coverage and wifi at the house is excellent, much better than I have come to expect after four or five trips to this area in recent years.
We just stayed at Villa Gauguin for a week. I can't say enough how much we loved this villa. The house is absolutely immaculate, yet still comfortable and livable. The house is right on Yal Ku lagoon. The waters just in front of the house are fun for snorkeling. There is a fresh water river that flows right into the lagoon. This can cause some halocline and thermocline conditions in the water. This means that sometimes the water can appear "oily". This is just nature. If you dive down a foot or so, its super clear.
The waters around the lagoon are pristine. We saw no trash, nothing but fish and coral. If you are into snorkeling, you will see parrot fish, sergeant majors, tangs, sea hares, sea slugs, an occasional eel, sting rays, eagle rays, turtles, etc. Snorkeling into the lagoon park is really fun. Lots of rock formations that are fun to swim around. I felt like an explorer.
Getting into the water may require some planning. You need to be comfortable walking on a rough rocky surface. Bringing flip flops, rubber soled fin socks, or something like that will make it easier on your feet. There are 2 sets of stairs into the water. Its still not super easy to get in and out if you have mobility issues but with a little patience everyone in our group (ages 6-75) was able to get in and enjoy the waters.
The pool is fantastic too. We spent most evenings in the pool just enjoying the view. Kids playing and adults relaxing.
Francisco and Gladys keep the house so clean. They are very warm and friendly people. They both greeted us with a warm smile everyday. We had them cook for us 4 times. All I can say is wow! What a treat. The food was delicious. My favorite meal was the chili rellenos, but I can't complain about any of it. It was much lighter fare than I am used to in Mexican restaurants in Atlanta. Francisco and Gladys will keep to themselves to respect your privacy but we were grateful knowing they were there to keep the house in good shape and to keep things safe.
The house has some great treats for little guys (or grown ups that forget they are grown up). There are iguanas out on the rocks. They will gladly share your fruit. You may also see tejons, pacas, turtles, and hermit crabs.
Groceries in the area are also affordable. We went into the southern part of Playa for groceries. The stores can be a bit overwhelming but the prices were fine.
To summarize, this place is AMAZING! We miss Villa Gauguin!
