Overview

About the property

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + Loft, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6 adults, 2 children)

The Willow Cottage is one of only two beautiful cottages on Cold Mountain's 200 Riverfront Acres. This page features The Willow, but if your dates are taken for The Willow Cottage, please be sure to check the availability of VRBO Listing 355657 or simply email or call us. Thank you. Please visit us on Facebook: The Cottages at Cold Mountain. Watch the video! You will be glad you did!

Just take a look at the pictures...the cottage was designed by renowned architect Keith Summerour and the idea was to take the very finest elements of luxury homebuilding and scale them down to an enjoyable, sensible size of 2300 feet. In the indoors, we wanted guests to be able to enjoy the very best materials, craftsmanship and design--understated elegance. The exterior features locally harvested stone, cedar siding, and unbelievable Ludowici clay tile roofing. Guests will feel at once that they are stepping back in time to an era when craftsmanship and materials still mattered, and stepping forward into the future with a home heated & cooled with underground geothermal wells.

The kitchen, dining and living areas are fully integrated with an all-stone terrace complete with wood burning fireplace and antique timber-framed porch. The kitchen features plaster walls, beautiful views, a Wolf range, two Subzero refrigerators and beautiful soapstone countertops and custom cabinets.

The Willow Cottage is one of two cottages located within the private, gated riverfront conservation community called Cold Mountain. The clear waters of the East Fork River run through the property, and our guests have access to 1/2 mile of it. The 200 acres features the river which is within 300 feet of the cottage. The cottage is located in the heart of the meadow area of Cold Mountain and is within 100 feet of an historic dairy barn (no animals today) and a 1/2 acre catfish pond bordered by Willow Trees. A beautiful activity field for soccer, volleyball or chasing fireflies is 100 feet away as is an apple orchard, small vineyard and raspberry and blackberry patches. (Great for the morning's cereal.) The upper 1/3 of Cold Mountain is very mountainous and guests can hike, mountain bike, ride horses, camp or picnic at 4,000 feet if they wish.

You will need to carefully consider the town that is close by. If you haven't discovered Waynesville, do yourself a favor and check it out. This year, no less a source than the L.A. Times called Waynesville 'the perfect blend of mountain charm and sophistication.' Art galleries, tailgate markets, incredible wine store (Wineseller) just 15 minutes away. Want to take advantage of something in Asheville--35 minutes away. We love Asheville too, but the truth is it is a city, which is what we believe a lot of people are seeking to escape. Stay in the country, use Waynesville as your anchor town and cherry-pick the best of Asheville's offerings. Now, you are 35 minutes away from Asheville and 15 minutes from Waynesville, but that gives you the payoff of a spectacularly beautiful, riverfront setting. Plus, you are in the direction of something...Pisgah National Forest begins just 5 minutes south of the property and leads you into some of the most beautiful and iconic places in the Eastern US--Sliding Rock, Mount Pisgah Inn, Looking Glass Falls and many more are within 20 minutes for a truly unlimited amount of recreational potential. Finally, Springdale Golf Club (18 holes) is directly across the street for any family members keep a swing sharp.

We built and furnished the Willow Cottage because we were generally disappointed with the quality of both the homes and properties available for vacation rental. Also, being flatlanders from Hilton Head, we had grown tired of those terribly steep properties that have nice views, but nothing to do. The Willow Cottage at Cold Mountain is an absolutely unique offering in Western North Carolina with views, water and lots of room to roam...thank you for taking a moment to consider us. We look forward to hearing from you. We regret that the covenants of Cold Mountain do not permit weddings.

About Melba Ballew

The Willow Cottage is owned by two families, one from Hilton Head and the other from Santa Fe, who came together to create a vacation offering that they had always sought, but seldom found: sufficient beauty, warmth and luxury to restore the adults, but lots of room-to-roam onsite in free pursuit of adventure for kids (and kids at-heart) so that they must be called-in from outside.

Melba Ballew purchased this house in 2010

Why Melba Ballew chose Canton

We chose Cold Mountain and the Cruso Valley as the location for the Willow Cottage because it is the perfect balance between country and city living. Any closer to Asheville, and we were not getting our “River Runs Through It” fix; any farther from Asheville felt a little too “Deliverance” or required traversing winding, nauseous roads. Also, being from two popular tourist destinations—Hilton Head and Santa Fe—we wanted a mountain experience that felt like a genuine getaway, rather than a duplication of our country club environs back home or, worse, the contrived resort-town experience.

What makes this house unique

The stage is set for you to create your own experiences. Wade or tube the river, or help a child catch a first fish in the pond. Work with a local chef for a catered dinner on the sunset knoll or pack pimento cheese sandwiches to eat riverside. Read a novel start-to-finish in the hammock under the birches with the river flowing alongside. Risotto and your favorite red at The Chef’s Table in Waynesville, or hamburger, fries and a chocolate malt at Jukebox Junction in Cruso. The list goes on and on and we are available to give you as much help as you like in planning activities for a long-remembered mountain vacation.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Wonderful, long weekend. We rented both Laurel and Willow for three generations ranging in age from 1yr. to 71 years. Beautifully appointed cottages, amply provided with amenities, in a lovely setting. Kids loved fishing and just running in the grass. Lots of great conversation and food in a wide choice of venues/views.

Cozy home, well appointed.

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay! Comfy, cozy home, with stunning views from the “sunset knoll;”the young people loved swimming and stacking rocks, tubing in the river, sitting out back in front of the fire watching the wild life and fireflies. We are planning a trip the next time the college kids are on break. We loved it.

A beautiful house and property!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful vacation at Willow Cottage! It was such a beautiful house and property. The house was well-stocked from kitchen to fireplace supplies (sticks for smores too!) to all of the important incidentals (shampoo and soap in each bathroom, dishwashing soap). The property was amazing, and had something for everyone...plenty of spots to relax, hiking trails, tubing on a river, and berry picking! It was a perfect fit for our family (with 2 teens), and we would definitely recommend it to anyone!

Beautiful Property

  • 5 of 5

The house was beautiful and really well equipped. There were even fishing rods for the pond, and tubes for the Pigeon River which flows right through the property.

A great, relaxing time was had by all!

An exceptional place to visit!

  • 5 of 5

This is a remarkable venue. We rented both homes for a milestone birthday, and had three generations (age ranges 1-71) in attendance. The grandkids loved the fishing ponds, the pavilion, and the fields and hills on which to run and play. The adults loved the views and the very well-appointed houses. Everyone enjoyed the porches. The setting is conducive to relaxed conversation and togetherness, while offering plenty of privacy and comfort for down times. The kitchens were unusually well stocked, and the appliances were top-of-the-line. S’mores at the fire pit are a must for any visit! Truly a special place for a family rendezvous.

Better than we even expected!

  • 5 of 5

Without exception, we were thrilled with this rental.

First of all, the property truly is as amazing as the pictures, descriptions and reviews said it would be. Gorgeous inside and out. Well-constructed and maintained. Nicely furnished.

The kitchen is well-stocked. Plenty of pots, pans, serving dishes, tableware, flatware...and of surprisingly good quality for a rental property. With two refrigerators, we had plenty of room to store the HUGE amount of food we brought. And so well-stocked that, had we known, we would have cut the amount we packed in half.

What we wish we HADN'T brought:

* Blankets: picnic blanket, lap blankets for outside evenings by the fire

* Showering supplies; they generously provide full-sized body wash, shampoo and conditioner in each shower

* Lighter/matches to light fires. Plenty were provided as well as firewood.

What we ARE glad we brought:

* Our Roku, which greatly expanded our television viewing options.

* Extra Keurig cups. By the way, the cottage even comes with a stocked drawer of coffee sweetner, creamer, stir sticks, etc. Very thoughtful.

* Laundry detergent and softeners. It was so nice to do a load or two of laundry.

* Our yummy spa-type robes. We spent so much time relaxing with one another over coffee in the mornings and wine in the evenings; the robes really added to the comfort.

What we WISH we had brought:

* Hiking shoes for all. One member of our group didn't bring his and we feel that h*e really missed a great experience by not joining us on our hike.

* A shorter "To Do" list. We abandoned many of our plans because being there was just too good.

We are already planning our next trip. In fact, when I hit submit on this review, I will immediately check to see if my fall dates are available.

Amazing cottage

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing cottage. My wife and her immediate family all went to Canton NC for my wife’s birthday. She wanted s special time for her birthday which is Christmas Day. They owners of this cabin even had a real Christmas tree up for our stay during Christmas. It was quite chilly while we were there and hoped for snow but we didn’t get that this go around. The property offers fun and games, hiking, fishing and more. We explored the property and enjoyed nights by the fire at the cottage. Amazing, and definitely a favorite thus far. You won’t be let down if you choose this cottage.
