About this property

Rustic Log Cabin / Farm Vacation / Romantic Getaway

A Unique Northwood’s Retreat. (https://rumble.com/vf45sl-a-log-cabin-stay.html)

This handcrafted log cabin, based on the Early American style, built by owners Russ and Kelli Nellis, has been a favorite getaway for families and couples since 2001.

The cabin is tucked away just inside a maple grove on the Nellis’ 200-acre homestead for a private, yet not too remote of a location. The sugar maples provide the Nellis family with plenty of delicious homemade maple syrup every spring. During that time, the family enjoys visitors as they sit around the fire boiling down the sap.

There’s plenty to see at the Nellis farm as they raise Shetland sheep, chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese. With lots of room to roam you can take a leisurely stroll around the property, mountain bike or go hiking out in the woods on numerous trails, explore the cedar bog which is carpeted in lush moss (rubber boots required). In the winter you can snowshoe or cross country ski (skis and snowshoes not provided). Snowmobile trails are located nearby.

The cabin has all the comforts of home with two queen-size beds, one on the main floor and the second upstairs in the loft. The loft is furnished with a whirlpool tub for two, a sitting area and a writing desk. A full bathroom with shower, toilet, sink and vanity is located on the first floor.

Take some time to relax and catch up on some reading or watch a movie in the living room which has a sleeper sofa, TV, DVD/BlueRay player and recliner.

Make light meals in the kitchenette which is equipped with a microwave oven, counter top indoor grill, toaster oven, toaster, coffee pot, dishes, and utensils. There is a gas grill for your outdoor cooking convenience by the picnic area and campfire ring. Campfire wood is included.

Enjoy the fresh air and scenery from the front porch swing and rocking chairs provided for your pleasure.
There all kinds of area activities and sights to see since the Log Cabin Homestead is located in the heart of the Northwoods between Eagle River and Rhinelander with countless lakes surrounding great for boating, fishing and recreation. The area is a popular destination for hunting as well. For excellent dining, Sugar Camp is home to two well-known restaurants, The White Stag, which is ¼ mile south at the corner of Hwy’s D and 17 and The Cookery, 2 miles south on Hwy 17.

Whether you are looking for a vacation full of activity, a quiet getaway, a honeymoon retreat or are learning about getting back to the land and want to visit a modern day homestead, the Log Cabin Homestead has much to offer.

The Nellis family invites you to pull up a chair and stay awhile!

***After retiring from the garbage business of 21 years we've had time to make some improvements to the cabin. There is now a small kitchen sink in the kitchenette, new shelving, new lamps, a new pathway behind the cabin giving our guests easier access to the numerous trails on the property. And pavers for the main walk way leading up to the cabin front entrance.

Cute, rustic, cozy cabin in the woods
We love this place! My husband and I have stayed here twice. The cabin is super charming and cozy, has a spiral staircase to the second floor with a large jacuzzi tub, perfect for 2 people, with lofted wood beam ceiling. The beds are super comfy, the kitchen is well stocked (it is a kitchenette, no stove by they have a large toaster over, microwave, full size coffee pot). There is a grill, fore pit, a nice front porch, property to walk on with animals to see and really cool huge wooden swings on the property. It is a short drive to Rhinelander, Eagle River and some fun local bar/restaurants in between. We woke up to a bald eagle eight outside our window in a tree during our last stay. Greta place for 2-4 people! Rummy’s bar up the road has great pizza.

Great getaway
I wanted to give my parents a good gift for Christmas, we used to go up to three lakes every year, but after my aunt sold the cabin and we haven't been up in forever, this gave them the opportunity to do that annual trip once again and have all the memories rush back! Thank you!

Kelli and I grew up in IL about half way between Chicago and Milwaukee. We were married in 1984 and had three children.

It was our dream to live a self-sustainable a life, so we looked for property for several years taking countless day trips and mini vacations looking for just the right place, logging thousands of miles. Finally in 1989 we found 120 acres in Northern Wisconsin and purchased it with my parents in 1990. We moved here in 1998 and my parents followed us up several years later.

Kelli and I and our 3 children pulled up roots and moved here with no job prospects at all. In time and out of necessity we became entrepreneurs doing what ever we could to earn money. In 1990 we started Countryside Trash Removal and are now one of the main residential garbage collectors in our area. But, our passion is getting back to the land and we raise much of our own food, organically.

We have three generations of family currently living and working together on this modern day homestead.

Why they chose this property

Early in our marriage we had stayed in an authentic 1800’s Early American style hand hewn log cabin and fell in love with that type of log building. We so enjoyed our stay in that structure that we dreamed of one day building our own cabin.

Kelli and I built this cabin our selves and with the help of various family and friends who pitched in a hand from time to time. We began the project in 1999 and had our first guests in 2001. Folks have loved this little cabin in the woods and we have had nothing but positive feedback with it. When we don’t have guests we still go up and enjoy it ourselves to this day.

What makes this property unique

The cabin is cozy, peaceful and relaxing. We have used it for holiday celebrations, bible studies and meetings. It has aesthetic appeal by being constructed with natural materials.
