Cottage, 4 Bedrooms + Detached Unit, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 8)
Beautifully cared for two-story house with many windows and a large deck where you can relax and enjoy looking out at the ocean and up the beach to Point of Breakers. A short 200 foot walk through the moors gets you to the top of the stairs that lead down to your own virtually private stretch of beach. This beach offers good swimming and, if you bring your rod, a good sized fish can be caught anywhere along this stretch.
There is a large veranda in front of the cottage with lots of seating and a freestanding hammock. It's a great place to enjoy your morning coffee and soak in the view.
The main house has two bedrooms upstairs with a shared full bathroom. One of the bedrooms has two twin beds and the other one has a queen. Both upstairs bedrooms have beautiful views of the ocean and you will fall asleep to the sound of the waves. The main floor has a full kitchen, a dining area with an old wooden dining table and a bright, sunny living room with casual, comfortable seating. There is also a large bedroom with two twin beds and a half bathroom on the main floor. A private outdoor shower is provided on the back deck and is a favorite on warm days and after a swim.
Just across the driveway is a quaint one-bedroom cottage with a queen size bed, its own half bath and an outdoor shower. This is a great place if you want a bit more privacy. It also has a deck with a view of the ocean and its own covered front porch, great for reading and relaxing out of the sun. The whole property offers peace and quiet away from the crowds in town.
The beach just in front of the house is beautiful and stretches off in both directions for as far as you can see. After storms, large combers roll in and crash on the beach but when we get a period of calm, the ocean can be quite flat with hardly a wave. Most times the waves are just right for body surfing.
Downtown Nantucket is about a 15 minute drive and the market is a little closer.
The cottage is available for a minimum stay of one week, and the guest cabin cannot be rented separately.

About Patricia Sculthorpe
After years of renting this property we took the plunge and bought a half share with our cousin who was looking to share expenses and time at the property. We use it ourselves for most of the summer, but like to share it with others when we are not there, to help defray operating costs. The cottage is well-loved, very comfortable but not fancy. We are avid cooks so there is everything you need to prepare delicious meals for when you don't feel like eating out. Great for families, couples looking for a getaway, or groups of friends who don't want to be in town or surrounded by lots of people.
Patricia Sculthorpe purchased this Cottage in 2010
Why Patricia Sculthorpe chose Madequecham
We are biased of course, but we think this is the best place on the whole island. Thought we are close to the airport, we are not on the flight paths, so airport noise is never a problem. There are not many cottages along this stretch of beach so it is always quiet and we never tire of the beauty of the beach and the moors, or of the sound of the waves lulling us to sleep at night. In less than 15 minutes we can be downtown enjoying all that is on offer there, including world class restaurants, exciting cultural activities, and great shopping. But even when the island is at its very busiest, we can always escape to the quiet and peace of the cottage. We have no Wifi and this contributes to the feeling of disconnectedness and back to nature that we cherish.

Five Years in a Row
I have rented the cottage for the past five years, counting the months between each return visit. The cottage is clean, comfortable and very well equipped, with everything you need for outdoors - including bbq, beach chairs and towels, and for indoors - including enough dishes to serve a large group and a wide array of cooking utensils, serving dishes etc. A wide range of books and games mean you will never run short of activities. There is a little cabin for additional guests or guests who would prefer a bit of distance! The views of the ocean are beautiful, and the sunsets are some of the most perfect you will ever see. The bench at the top of the stairs leading to the beach provides the perfect place to sit and stare at the ocean, contributing to the incredible sense of peace and serenity I feel when I am there. Whether you want to frolic in the ocean with your family, cycle around the island or lie motionless on the beach, this is the perfect base for you. The island is gorgeous, with great beaches (including the fabulous, quiet beach at the house), restaurants, shops. The owners are helpful and keen that others enjoy the island as much as they do. The road into the cottage can be bumpy, but is very manageable.
This review has been a long time coming, as I held off for years in the hope that no one else would discover this place. That said.. it is time to share.
This house is perfect for families/friends looking for a "classic" Nantucket experience. Its clean, cozy but spacious and has everything I could hope for. The kitchen is well stocked and a great space for big family meals, spilling out into a family room/dining room surrounded by windows. The wrap-around deck is perfect for sunset drinks, barbecuing or watching the sunrise with a cup of coffee. The upstairs bedrooms are both comfortable and quiet- there is nothing better than listening to the sound of the waves crashing at night.
The cottage across the driveway is incredibly cute and a great place for parents or grandparents to stay away from all the action. The outdoor shower in back of the cabin is the best place to wash off after a long day at the beach (there is one at the main house as well).
Then there is the beach... Right off the porch steps through the path, you come to your private set of stairs. In my opinion, this is the best beach on the island. Most days, you won't see another soul. Great for bodysurfing, surfcasting, etc.
Lastly, the owners are EXTREMELY helpful & responsive. You can tell that this place is special to them.
In summary, for anyone looking for the quintessential Nantucket escape, you cannot do any better. Yes, the road to the house is bumpy (SUV recommended), but that's part of the charm. For those that are looking for granite countertops, air conditioning and high definition televisions... you will be better off staying at the White Elephant. But for those who want to truly experience the beauty and serenity of Nantucket, this is the place. I can only hope to continue to share it with my family and friends for years to come.
One of the few remaining uncrowded beaches on Nantucket, Madequecham offers exciting surf conditions on many days, great for body surfing, boogie boarding and sometimes surfing, incredible beauty, serenity and privacy.
