The condo is located in South Kihei on Maui's sunny South-West side. The complex has a recently renovated pool and beautiful, well maintained tropical grounds. It is located within walking distance to everything, less than a 5 minute walk from Charley Young Beach, one of Maui's best swimming beaches, and Cove Park beach, one of Maui's best beginner surf spots. Shopping, restaurants, cafes and Starbucks are within a 10 minute walk as is Kalama Beach Park which has beach volleyball courts, a skateboard park, a roller skating rink, basketball courts and a playground. There's assigned, off street parking right in front of the unit.

The condo underwent a total renovation in 2011 and was updated again in October, 2015 with fresh paint, a new air conditioner in the living room and master bedroom, a new dining set, a new coffee table and new lanai furniture. The condo offers two real bedrooms (not a loft) and a separate living area. That makes all the difference when one person wakes up early from jetlag and you don't want everyone up!

The entire condo has been furnished and decorated professionally with a hotel like décor and contemporary furniture. New tile flooring throughout the unit helps keep it cool and comfortable. The master bedroom features a luxurious, four poster king bed and a luxury plush, serta-pedic mattress when you need to rest after a long day at the beach, the pool or sightseeing around the island. The second bedroom is the perfect hangout spot for kids with a twin bunk bed, plenty of space to play and a portable crib for the little one. The bunk bed can be separated into two twin beds. The living room is spacious, features a comfortable couch, chair and coffee table, as well as a small formal dining area. And all the entertainment options you need are provided with a new 42' LCD HD 1080p flat screen TV, Blu-ray player, 100+ cable TV channels (many in HD), instant streaming of movies, TV shows and music through Netflix, Pandora and Vudu (Vudu requires you to have an account), and of course there's free WIFI. The bathroom is completely remodeled in 2011 with a bathtub for the kids, a shower and a large vanity with room for all your toiletries. And for those beautiful mornings or perfect, warm evenings there's a table and comfortable chairs on our private lanai so you can have your breakfast and dinner outside with a view of the tropical garden and the pool.

The beautiful and functional kitchen with Corian countertops is fully stocked with everything you need to cook in your home away from home. The kitchen has a dishwasher, microwave, oven, gas stove, all necessary cooking utensils, blender, coffee maker, toaster, rice cooker and much more.

The condo is stocked with everything needed for a comfortable and fun stay. That includes beach chairs, umbrella strollers, coolers, beach towels, lots of towels, board games and some toys.

With two real bedrooms, the condo is just perfect for you and your kids. With two children of my own the condo has been furnished with everything I look for when traveling with the kiddos. The unit provides a luxurious hideaway for adults with a beautiful master bedroom, a functional kitchen and perfect entertainment system. On top of that, everything has been setup with kids in mind. It is all about keeping the kids happy so that everyone is happy! The second bedroom comes with a bunk bed and has a large open floor space so there's room to play. There is also a real wood portable crib on wheels that can fit in either bedroom or be moved around, as needed. There is a single and a double umbrella stroller. With a stroller, the nearby playground, beaches and restaurants are within walking distance for everyone! The condo is on the ground level and doesn't have any stairs so you don't need to carry anything or anyone up and down the stairs, or have anybody fall down. The condo is generally child safety proofed. The ladder on the bunk bed can be taken off making the top bunk bed off limits and there is a safety gate to close off the kitchen (or any room for that matter). No dangerous fall from the lanai as it's on the ground floor. Other things to make your stay enjoyable include toys, games, plastic kids utensils, booster chair, beach toys, and kids life vests (use at own risk). And I know your kids will enjoy picking their favorite TV show on Netflix when they need to wind down after an action packed day.

Why Michael Nielsen chose Kihei

When I moved to Seattle from Los Angeles, I knew I'd want to travel for sun during those long, rainy fall and winter months. I have stayed at various condos in Kihei, most I loved, one not so much! One of the first condos I rented was at Kalama Terrace and I was very impressed with the location, the people, and how well the grounds are kept. I knew it had to be a two bedroom condo for me to become an owner and over the years I've been looking on and off and finally this one came up. The condo was in a miserable state but I loved the opportunity to fully renovate the unit. I love the way it turned out and am sure you will too!

What makes this condo unique

I love the condo, because everything is so accessible. This is great for everyone, but a life saver when traveling with kids. The beach, the park with the playground, shops and restaurants are all a short walk from the condo and the pool is just a few steps across the lawn from the lanai. I also love the fact that it is an end unit and it feels like we have our own little private area.

Expected better

Reading the description of this condo we expected a clean unit. It was not even 3 star clean.

Pros: Close to beach and many restaurants.

Cons: Needs cleaning, repairs and replacement of several areas and items. The patio screen door was broken and did not close properly. Floor was dirty when we first arrived (i walked through the unit in my white socks once and they were black after) and kitchen had crumbs on the counter. Bathroom was ok, shower curtain was stained and old (for as $8 was-mart item this can be changed every few months). Couch smelled dirty.

We were underwhelmed. The units around us seemed cleaner and better kept. This unit was not terrible, but was just not that good. We complained to the owner of this unit soon after our arrival and unpacking. He initially refunded us $50 right away which we thought was nice. We were looking for something more due to the fact that we had to clean this place to make it feel comfortable. He then contacted us saying he spoke to his cleaner and vouched that she had cleaned the unit for 8 hours and trusted her. We disagreed with him, told him our situation and that we were simply disappointed in the condition of the room (no different if it was a hotel). We would not rent this unit again.

Owner's Response: I'm sorry my condo did not meet your expectations. Karrie and I both put a lot of pride into offering a clean, well appointed and affordable vacation rental. I know you 'can't win them all' but I must admit that 2 stars really hurt. That is not the feeling I want anyone to leave Maui Family Condo with! Karrie has been the on-island caretaker of my condo since I bought it back in 2011, so for over 7 years now. She is kind, professional and does a fantastic job, and I can assure you that the unit was cleaned thoroughly the day prior to your arrival. In fact, I spoke to Karrie several times that day because there were a few issues that needed to be resolved following the prior guests. As I mentioned when we spoke, Kihei gets strong trade winds most afternoons. With those dust can get through the cracks by the front door and through the jealousy windows because they are not 100% tight and that can leave a fine layer of dust on the floors. Because of that I provide both a broom and swiffers so you can quickly wipe the floors when you feel it is time. I'm sorry you had to do that right away. Most of the time Karrie will clean the condo on the day of arrival because most of the time we have a same-day turnover. I suspect the crumbs came from when Karrie put the toaster back in the top cabinet after wiping down the cabinet. I'm sorry she didn't catch that. As with any home, things break and get worn down over time. I constantly do updates and repairs. I just finished painting the entire condo. I also just installed a new fridge and a new dishwasher. The ACs and the stove all got replaced within the last 2 years as well. I repaired the lanai screen door and replaced the bottom window screens in the 2nd bedroom. I installed a roller shade on the lanai to help block the afternoon sun. I bought new pillows for all the beds. And, yes, the shower curtain liner does get replaced regularly. I'm always open to feedback and suggestions. If you let me know right away I will jump on the opportunity to make your stay better. And if you come across something that you think can be improved or needs to be fixed then please let me know so I can take care of it.

We had a great 1 week stay in Maui, the condo was the perfect spot from which to explore the island, hit the beach, or stroll down the road to the many restaurants in Kihei.

Perfect for a family stay

Great location two blocks from the beach

Enjoyed the overall stay even though the bathroom Plumbing was backing up and not flowing down the drain and not sure why the property owner used a property damage claim on a exterior window screen that we never touched!
