Pristine Oceanfront Home on Famous Surfing Beach

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8) maximum per contract.

“E Komo Mai” and welcome to our Tidepools retreat. Come let us explore the beauty of this private oceanfront estate that is steps away from the flora and fauna of tidepools that are home to many of Hawaii’s ocean attractions. Just steps out of our living room are small

and large tidepools to explore and swim in. If you prefer the pristine sandy beaches of Makaha our oceanfront retreat allows you to do both. Makaha is the best kept secret for those who live here and the guest who visit us because the west side has 20 plus miles of uncrowded white sandy beaches with the bluest waters you have ever seen.

Makaha Surfing Beach is known for its great surf and home to many classic professional surfers. In the winter you can count on being treated to spectacular 20 to 30 feet waves on one day and glassy waters the next…unpredictable and worth experiencing.

For snorkelers, Makaha Caverns are right in our backyard and known to have deep caverns and great snorkeling without having to pay the tour boats to bring you here. Each day the 5 star Disney and Ihilani Marriott hotel visitors pay to go on snorkeling excursions and they come right out to Makaha.

Our guest like that we are just far away enough but still close by to these resorts should they want to plan a romantic fine dining evening or go to a real Hawaiian luau. While here on vacation do your day trips to the popular tourist destinations like Waikiki, Pearl Harbor Memorial and other Oahu tourist attractions and still return to relaxation and beautiful sunsets alone and away from the hustle and bustle of the big city.

Other attractions that you will see right out your window is the whales that dance and jump throughout the day during whale watching season. You may even have a chance to swim with the dolphins as they pass by each morning and return back each evening. Our oceanfront is also home to the endangered monk seal and on some occasions you may see them basking in the sunshine on our shores.

Our spacious three bedroom two full bath panoramic oceanfront getaway is perfect for a large family vacation. We can even accommodate family reunions. Let us make this the most memorable vacation and life event for you…please “E Komo Mai.”

*Please see cancellation policy before booking. All cancelations will incur an additional $50.00 administration fee for canceling at any time.

Beautiful and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We loved the beach house and it was everything the owners promised on VRBO. The view from the home is breathtaking and the waters along the tidal pools by the home were a beautiful clear blue. Makaha beach is a very short walk away (you can walk along the tidal pools to the beach) and has a warm, soft sandy beach that was never crowded and was great for snorkeling. While in Oahu we talked to many Oahu residents who almost all said Makaha is the best beach on the island. The owners, Carolyn and Joe, were very nice and helpful. They never intruded on us or bothered us in any way. There were quite a few cats, but they were never a problem and clearly none of the cats had ever been in the area of the house we were renting: my wife is highly allergic to cats and she never had a problem. There are houses to either side of this house, and on a couple nights a neighbor's big dog was barking and on another night a neighbor was making lots of noise and shouting. Just bring earplugs. To us it wasn't a big deal: I've stayed in five-star hotels and had noisy neighbors. I and five of my family members stayed at the home and felt there was more than enough space for everyone to sleep comfortably. This rental is for you if you are looking for a secluded place away from the tourist area and want to meet locals and want to experience the beauty and serenity of Oahu without having to deal with crowds. The price of the home is excellent compared to what you will get for the same money in Honolulu. My family and I visited Disney's Aulani Resort: rooms for this time of year range from $650.00 up to (and probably more than) $900.00 a night. Though Disney property's are always beautiful, Aulani couldn't compete with the beauty we saw from the home's view of the ocean. Read review's of the Aulani and the surrounding hotels and you will see that these resorts consider a room an "ocean view" room even if you can only see a sliver of the ocean from your room or balcony. Joe and Carolyn's home offers a guaranteed wonderful view of the ocean. The home is an easy approximately 35-45 minute drive from Honolulu (depending on traffic), so if you want to plan things to do in Honolulu, you won't waste much time driving. Oahu is small enough that you can get anywhere on the island within a few hours. We look forward to visiting again and highly recommend staying at Joe and Carolyn's beach house.

Makaha paradise found

  • 5 of 5

Stayed early June and enjoyed every moment. Daily sunrises watching the surf with coffee on the patio. Sunsets by the fire pit with a glass of wine. Exploring the beach and rocks. Joe and Carolyn are wonderful hosts, gave suggestions for local restaurants to look for. Thai, Burgers. Breakfasts etc. Secluded location, maybe 45 minutes to major attractions, worth the drive.

Kitchen was well appointed, we cooked breakfast and dinner a few times during the stay.

Incredible first trip to Hawaii. Looking forward to return visit.

Gorgeous beachfront property - wonderful hosts

  • 4 of 5

We loved waking up to the view of the ocean and beach right out the back door each morning. This home is well stocked. The bedding is clean and comfortable. Large beach towels to use. The kitchen has many useful things. Tip: don't grocery shop before arriving. They have many condiments, spices and even some food items. The bathroom had some left over lotions, shampoo, soaps etc. It was nice to have all those things availabile. Lots of hangers in the closet. Card games and books were available in the chest. Carolyn and Joe were always kind and willing to offer any assistance we needed. As for cats... yes, there are many on the property. But, they were never a problem for us in the apartment. My husband is very allergic to cats and never had any need for allergy meds. He never had a problem with them.

Perfect Location!

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful spot. Perfect for my small family of 4 and could have easily help a few more. The hostess was very friendy and gracious while we were here...allowing us without hesitation, to have a handful of family memebers over to make leis for my son's graduation. A beauiful and relaxing front yard to watch the waves or step down on the sand and get our feet wet in the Sea. I would definitely stay here again and look forward to doing so!

Spacious, private, lovely ocean view, and access to sand and tide pools.

  • 4 of 5

I can't say enough nice things about the accommodations for our first week in Hawaii. We booked 7 adults into Carolyn's home for my sister's wedding, and we had the whole downstair ground level to ourselves as a base for others staying in condos nearby. It was very comfortable for all of us. Carolyn and Joe were excellent, friendly hosts.

The ceremony on the lawn in front of the ocean was picture perfect. The open floor plan inside and outside picnic tables were idea for everyone to gather for meals. The grill was perfect. The setting was both spectacular, quiet, and relaxing, exactly what family and friends wanted before going off to explore various different islands.

The house's West Shore location is a few steps away from famous Makaha beach, which has challenging surf. It is famous with the locals for surfing but little daunting for inexperienced ocean swimmers. (The life guarding is excellent.) You have to drive (often in traffic) about 25 minutes for groceries, "baby beaches," and hiking. On the other hand, you see the non-resort, non-tourist, life of Oahu, such as the local 12 yr old and under Junior Surfing championship on we enjoyed watching on Makaha.

Being off the beaten path did not keep any of us from exploring the area and Honolulu, the Dole Plantation, or the famous Pipeline. However, If you want to see sights like Pearl Harbor, Waikiki, calm snorkeling, or kayaking, you will have to drive and plan for the traffic.

What's not to like?

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful house, a back yard with a beach, start every day outside with coffee watching the surfers, spend the days elsewhere on the island or at the house - swimming at the beach or in the "pond" created in the reef, checking out the tide pools for fish and crabs, taking surfing lessons with Danny... it was a wonderful stay. The house is nice, although if you're worried about private sleeping you'll want to be in one of the bedrooms - my husband and I were fine with the bed behind a curtain and our son was happy to sleep on the bed near the kitchen so our fellow travelers could be in the bedrooms. It was a very comfortable home. We cooked dinner many nights in the kitchen and enjoyed marshmallows by the fire pit one night. We all enjoyed the cats, but as another reviewer said, if you don't care for them they'll leave you alone. We never saw dolphins, monk seal, turtles or whales from the house, which I admit was a big attraction for me in choosing it, but we saw them elsewhere during our stay and really enjoyed being right on the beach. The location is a bit off the beaten path if you're interested in the rest of the island, but away from the tourist stuff was what we wanted. We still we made drives to Pearl Harbor and the eastern and northern shores and were always happy to come back to this wonderful spot.
