Lake Leelanau Summer Rental with 60 Secluded Acres, Lakefront

Bedrooms 4
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

Birch Haven is a private family home on 60 forested acres (with 40 more acres in hay) with trails, fields, and a spectacular wooded lakefront. Located in Leelanau County, Birch Haven is just eight miles from Traverse City on the south end of beautiful Lake Leelanau.

Start your day with a hike through hardwood forests and open fields without leaving the property! Breakfast on the deck in absolute privacy among beech, birch, tamarack and cedar trees. Bike 1/2 mile to the paved Leelanau Trail and ride the old railroad grade 8 miles south to Traverse City or 13 miles north to the lakeside village of Suttons Bay. Better yet, take your road bike and hit some of the best biking roads in the country. After your ride, cool off with a swim, and then relax in the sun on the deck at the end of our new 80 foot dock. Finish your day watching the sunset over the western hills of Lake Leelanau, enjoying a campfire by the wooded lakeshore. If the kids are adventurous, let them sleep out on cots in the two camping huts by the lake (bring your own sleeping bags!).

Traverse City is a short bike or car ride away. Recently named one of the ten best places to retire in the US in 2012 by US News and World Report, Traverse City is home to the National Cherry Festival and the Traverse City Film Festival. Traverse City boasts one of the nicest downtowns in the midwest! Excellent shopping, fine dining, and a spectacular white sand beachfront on Grand Traverse Bay await you. Local produce is available at two weekly farmers markets. The best of the region's wine, craft beers and artisanal cheeses and breads can be found in many of the shops, restaurants, tasting rooms and bars. The Interlochen Center for the Arts is only 24 miles away. With wonderful student performances and a summer concert series featuring some of the greatest artists on the classical, country, rock, jazz and folk scenes, an evening at Interlochen is magical.

Leelanau County's reputation for natural beauty is well deserved. 26 miles to the west is the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, recently voted the most beautiful place in American by the viewers of ABC's Good Morning America! Go wine tasting at one of the many fine wineries in the county (there are at least 10 within 10 miles of Birch Haven). Fish for walleye in Lake Leelanau or hit the big water of Lake Michigan on a charter boat out of Leland. Of course you can bring your own boat and put in at the nearby launch at the end of Bingham Road or rent at one of the many marinas in the area. Or just enjoy our rowboat and canoe.

Birch Haven has a basement rec room with a game table and ping pong tables. There's cable, a flat screen TV, WiFi, an outdoor deck with charcoal grill (bring your own charcoal and lighter fluid) a dining table and chairs and comfy lounge furniture. There is a huge field on the property for family games like capture-the -flag, flashlight tag and kite flying!

The house features a master bedroom with queen bed and attached full bath, and three upstairs bedrooms with a queen bed, a full bed, and two twin beds respectively. Sleeps 8. A caretaker and family live nearby to assist you should you need it or have questions. You will pass their residence as you come in the 1/4 mile long driveway. Introduce yourself if you choose.

About Kate

This house was built by my dad. He put so much of himself into it: the stone work, the hardwood floors, the game boards built into the floor, the paneling he milled from trees on the property, the funky outdoor sculptures. This is a house meant to be used by a family that appreciates craftsmanship.

Kate purchased this house in 1985

Why Kate chose Northwest

My dad chose this place and built it. I am just lucky.

What makes this house unique

I love this spot because of the privacy. I walk my dog and swim without one person seeing me. It is a wonderful, secluded spot.

Early Fall Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I totally enjoyed our four-day stay at this Lake Leelanau get away. It's not very often when pictures do not do justice to the actual home. The inside was very cozy and relaxing for us and Gracie, our senior brittany. The property allowed for great walks through trees, grassland and eventually ending up on the private dock on Lake Leelanau.

In the evening we enjoyed lounging on the back deck as well as going into the lower level for some ping pong and foosball. I also want to mention that while you're playing games in the lower level, don't forget to turn on the old radio and tune in some favorite local radio stations.

Since we are avid cyclists (TART Trail is very close) and kayakers (Lake Leelanau on site) we hope that we will be fortunate enough to stay again at this very nice home. Thanks Kate!

Wish we could stay here forever

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful craftsmanship, open floor plan, outstanding lower level game room the kids LOVED, and plenty of space to spread out. Lake is beautiful -- clear water, great dock, and really enjoyed having a canoe and rowboat to tool around in. Fantastic Up North location makes a convenient jumping off spot for day trips to Northport, Mission Peninsula, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Port Oneida, etc. Loved having the bike trail right at the end of the road -- we took many trips to Traverse City and Suttons Bay that way. Thank you for sharing your family's home with us!

Great rental

  • 5 of 5

The house and location are very unique, and exactly as advertised. The house is really spacious and comfortable, with all kinds of cool details in the woodwork and layout, loved it. The property is very secluded and huge, lots to explore, and the mowed paths make it easy to do that. The lake frontage is also amazing, including a new dock, plenty of seating, and a fire pit. It's also a great base from which to explore other areas of the Leelanau Peninsula, Sleeping Bear, Old Mission Peninsula, etc. cause it's so centrally located. Kate was super responsive and helpful, we highly recommend this house. Also, was quite surprised to find that there really weren't many mosquitoes in late June, even though the house is in the middle of the woods. We sat out on the deck till midnight without any issues.

Incredible place

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed in this magic home two weeks ago, it is an absolutely unforgettable place. The house itself was built so beautifully - with so much care and so much affection you can feel it throughout. Everything is thought through, there was more than enough space for all of us and the kids had a blast. The grounds and trails are so well maintained, fields of wildflowers, the lakefront is perfect, and private trails for wandering - really just magic. We've stayed in the area for years and have never found a place quite as special as this one. Thank you Kate - and thank you to your dear father. We hope to be back next year!!

Love this place!

  • 5 of 5

This is the 4th summer that we have stayed at Birch Haven. I wrote a review after the first summer and feel the need to reiterate. This place is truly a gem. I love the space and privacy this property offers. The cottage itself has plenty of room for our family of 4 adults, 4 kids , and 2 dogs. Everything was clean and we really had everything we needed. The property itself is so expansive and private. There are no close neighbors aside from the caretaker's place. We spent a lot of time in the lake this year due to the hot weather. The bottom is rocky, but not a problem if you wear watershoes. The space for campfires and smores is great. It feels like you are camping, except you get to sleep in a comfortable bed at the end of night :) The kids got in a good game of baseball in the fields again this year. Golf, foot golf, biking, volleyball in the lake, trips to Glen Arbor, and Moomer's for ice cream were the highlights this year. It seems like we find something different to do each year because the location is so perfect. This place offers everything needed for a true up North vacation. Many thanks to the owners for everything and we will be back again next year!
