About The Owner

I am a mother of five, married 35 years. I love to travel, but of all the places I have been all over the world, the place I love the most is this quiet spot in Perdido Beach Alabama. I love remembering all the wonderful times that I have spent here with family and friends ...the waterskiing and the sailing with my dad, the nightly singing on the front porch and the feasts around my great grandmother's big mahoghany table, late night discussions of life's important questions on the dock, counting falling stars, skinny dipping and sunbathing with sisters and friends, building 'turtle houses' on the beach as a kid and sandcastles with my own children, repeatedly counting cousins in the water, watching lightning storms across the bay, afternoon naps on my mother's porch swing, 'junking' at nearby shops with my sisters, walking to the old post office to retrieve the mail from box 19, and penny candy from the general store,

boat parades on July 4.....54 years of kicking up the same sand down the same driveway, enjoying stunning Alabama sunsets and beautiful azaleas and hydrangeas planted by my grandmother, chasing visiting dolphins in the boat, enjoying a book on the deck...countless memorable hours at Perdido Beach with my children, my family, and my friends have made my life exceedingly rich. Blessed as I am, I couldn't figure out how to make my picture with my 84 year old Dad vertical....(thank you to the VRBO team who fixed that!)....he's a treasure, and you might be lucky enough to meet him, if you rent this wonderful property....

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1970

Why The Owner chose Alabama

My father vacationed with his parents in the area when he was a boy. His parents bought land and build a home adjacent to this land before I was born. I was raised spending my summers here. My sisters and I inherited this vacation home from my mother after she died.

What makes this cottage unique

The location is ideal because although it is secluded, it is also convenient to shopping, restaurants, movies, and really anything that might be needed. Both Pensacola and Mobile are within reach.

The Gulf of Mexico is just 25 minutes by car and 10 minutes by boat. The brackish water offers the benefits of a lake, warm but not too hot...salty, but not too salty. The sandy bottom is comfortable; water shoes are not even necessary. You are near civilization but it is quiet and peaceful. There's some boating activity, especially on weekends, but not too much...Just the right blend for a perfect retreat...

Guestbook comments from the owner

I wanted to Thank you for letting my husband and son enjoy your secret hideaway in Alabama. During our breaks from baseball we enjoyed boating in the bay and watching the dolphins. My son Travis invited a friend over to ride on the tube in the bay and they had the best time ever. I was watching from the porch and could hear them laughing from the water. Nothing is better than a child’s laughter. We will be seeing you again .

Wonderful Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful Cozy Cottage! Perfect for waterfront vacation in a quiet, away from it all place! Close enough to shopping, restaurants and recreation venues to visit easily. Favorite restaurant was Lambert's in Foley! Home had everything supplied you needed, just bring your own paper goods and daily personal items and your set for a perfect stay.

Kids (3 and 4 years) loved the dock to catch their first fish from and the blue heron who was close by to eat them for his dinner! Kids loved this place from start to finish--didn't want to go home!

Beautiful setting on the water to just relax and enjoy the dolphins swimming by! Back porch is screened in and was so nice. Outside shower was a plus with the lawn furniture right there to sit on while you dried off.

Loved the dock for our boat! Bring plenty of boat bumpers (no rubber on dock). Water does get pretty rough during the thunderstorms. We loved being able to just park our boat and come and go as we pleased!

The main reason we picked this cottage was the boat dock and the location, on a creek and it was beautiful.

There is plenty of room to turn your boat/trailer around once you get into area around cottage with plenty of regular car parking BUT the only problem we had with this beautiful place was that we couldn't take our boat out of the water during a bad thunderstorm because we couldn't get the boat (21' pontoon) on the trailer in the long driveway into the home without scratching the boat or tearing our bimini top, the main driveway in is long and the tree limbs hang too low and in too far on sides. The boat launch for a medium to larger size boat is a few miles away (10+ minutes) and you have to drive your boat back to dock which takes 15 minutes (20 mph) or more depending on your boats speed and waters roughness.

The cottage does have a small boat launch as well as another one a block away but both are in very shallow water and are for smaller boats.

We appreciate the owners for allowing our pets (deposit) to come with us, they had the time of their lives. So glad to see they were animal lovers too!

We loved this place and look forward to many more vacations here in the future!

Our second stay at this home and another very enjoyable relaxing vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here two years ago (summer 2014) and had a great time during our family vacation. Now my oldest son has graduated college and we wanted to get in a "full family vacation" before he started his new job. He even brought along his girlfriend for the trip and she made the trip all the more fun for our family. Everything was the same as before during our previous visit. We enjoyed talking to Gene next door and swapping stories while catching up and like him very much. We missed seeing him interact with his grandchildren who were visiting during our first visit and even my boys now call him "Poppy" which was his nickname by his grandchildren. We fished most every evening for catfish and some days we fished and swam off the little pier out back. The local heron's enjoyed our stay while we fished as well. We made the mandatory visit to the ocean beach only once because we had everything we needed at the house. Again, shopping is less than half an hour away at the Tanger Outlet stores in Foley and we found a great new place to eat fresh seafood at the Fish River Grill near Gulf Shores. It was a nice trip and ended too quickly. Perhaps we will be back next year as we lamented not returning there during our 2015 vacation.

Thanks J. for another great vacation!

Southern charm with lots of hospitality

  • 5 of 5

This is THE place to stay!!

My husband, our six kids, & I stayed at this charming home for four nights in April 2015. There was plenty of room with lots of indoor and outdoor things to do.

The kids played in the tree house, swings, play equipment, basketball, & tether ball. We all enjoyed fishing, crabing, kayaking, hammocks, and porch swings. We enjoyed roasting hot dogs over the camp fire & using the grill to grill hamburgers and steaks. We even saw the Dolphins every day, throughout the day!

This place has everything we needed, and, if we didn't see something we needed, Mr. Gene got it for us.

Mr Gene even came over & played with the kids, took them for rides on the golf cart, & offered boat rides. Mr Gene was SO hospitable and we enjoyed visiting with him.

This was a wonderful stay with lots of laughter and fun. We had such a great time that we will be back!!

Thank you for the memories. We are looking forward to returning to make more!!

Sisters & husbands had a wonderful time on Palmetto Creek!

  • 5 of 5

Really enjoyed the cool, quiet and friendly environment visiting with family while relaxing here in June. Owners next door were wonderful hosts. Saw dolphins! Resting, reading and playing games in the evenings after cooking dinner capped off fun-filled days exploring nearby places of interest. Barber Marina's drive is lined with life-sized dinosaurs and the marina has lovely cypress furniture as well as lots of fishing equipment. Also near the outlet mall & shops in Foley. We loved this place & would like to stay there again.

Fun Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Where to begin. When we arrived we were greeted by Mr. Gene, who welcomed us and said make yourselves at home and that is exactly what we did. Everything was just as the listing said. The house was clean and felt just like home. The view from the back porch was just beautiful. My family has been taking vacations together for about 6 years now and this is the best rental we have had. Mr. Gene made us feel so welcome and I think my grandson found a new friend. Watching the dolphins swim by several times a day was so exciting, they came so close to my daughter she could almost reach out and touch it. We enjoyed the birds also. The boys loved the basketball court and Mr gene fixed them a tether ball to play. They also enjoyed the canoe and kayak. We really hated to leave for the day but we had made plans to see the sites so we had to go but we couldn't wait to return and sit under the shade trees and just watch the amazing sunset. The house is well stocked with everything you need, pots & pans, dishes, glasses, towels etc. The beds are very comfortable. The large dining table was great for all of us to eat together and for playing games at night. I just can't say enough about this place. If you are looking for a quite, peaceful place to spend your vacation then this is the place for you.

Thank You, Mr. Gene for making our stay so wonderful!
