Elk Meadows Villa Rental Photos and Description

Villa, 2 large guest suites, 3 Baths, (Sleeps up to 7)

Playfully known as the 'Taco Bell' because of the Spanish archway above the whimsical stairway to the roof (or heaven), there's nothing but beauty to be found here — either inside the 2,700 square foot custom home, or outside on its 9-acre parcel and beyond. Please have a look at my new video that shows the stunning location.

What puts this special property far above the norm?

This architectural masterpiece, features foot-thick New Mexico adobe brick, few right angles and dramatic ceiling vigas. Views of alpine nature are found outside every window. The original builder, a Hollywood special effects director, luxuriously furnished his home with fine furniture, tasteful Western art and numerous antiques.

Among the rooms:

* Airy, east-facing kitchen, with island range, custom cabinetry and bar seating.

* Two-story, south facing sunroom which collects copious sunlight and heat, especially in winter.

* A spacious guest suite, featuring a two-story ceiling, a king bed tucked into its own cozy adobe igloo, and separate doorway to east patio. The suite boasts its own full bathroom.

* An second-story office loft (with a twin bed) accessed up a spiral staircase in the guest suite.

* A tranquil den, perfect for morning coffee and your favorite novel, with a kiva fireplace.

* And finally, upstairs, the master suite. Large, with its own kiva fireplace and windows on three sides. A large balcony deck is off to the west (and off it, the “stairway to heaven,” and a cute two-seat deck faces north for cool summer evenings. A jacuzzi tub with west-facing views highlight the master bath.

* One of the bays in the garage is available for parking.

The home sits atop a hill at the back of a 9.6-acre parcel, providing total privacy and 360 degrees of elevated alpine views. The private driveway winds a quarter mile through the aspens, up 200 vertical feet.

To the west, the home overlooks the real “elk meadows” for which our unique subdivision is named. The meadows are preserved in wildlife conservation easement in perpetuity, meaning there is no human development for a mile to the west.

The eastern horizon consists of the Cimarron Range, and a 14er, Wetterhorn. Nearly 100 miles away on the northern horizon are the Grand Mesa and West Elks.

With the parcel heavily wooded with aspen, evergreens and oak scrub, game trails throughout the property have been improved for hiking, mountain biking (not for the faint!), and snowshoeing.

A nine-panel tracking solar array supplies almost all the electricity consumed at the house.

A fenced back yard of nearly an acre, gives the welcomed dog plenty of room to run and sniff.

A second homesite lower on the property offers level land for other possibilities, such as parking an RV or pitching a tent.

If your vacation is meant to include unparalleled scenic alpine beauty, a memorable and hospitable home, and world-class sightseeing and recreational opportunities, you’re here.

About David Mullings

For 15 years, I owned the newspapers in Ouray County, selling them in late 2010. Since my semi-retirement, I've enjoyed a lot of travel, and in catching up on the maintenance this house needed while I was toiling at my day job.

David Mullings purchased this villa in 2005

Why David Mullings chose Ridgway

I was born and raised in the mountains of New Mexico, and when this special home came on the market at what I thought was a fire-sale price (oops), I made the leap and moved here. Moving from a city apartment, the two dogs had found their Disneyland. The home's been lightly rented the last two summers by a local management, but with my unemployment, I've gone the vrbo route.

What makes this villa unique

I love living here, though one risks becoming a hermit, and starting to say 'ho-hum' to yet another unbelievable sunset. With all the outdoor possibilities and elevation changes, health and fitness are certainly benefits.

A Fun Fall Break with spectacular views from the Taco Bell House.

  • 5 of 5

It was so nice to meet you, David. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us on the kid's fall break. We were blown away with the architecture of the house as well as the unbelievable views from the rooftop. We got some great shots on our camera of the elk in the distance. We enjoyed hiking behind your home to the waterfall and stream. The dogs thoroughly enjoyed your fenced backyard and all of the trails around your home. We had plenty of room in your home, the kids took one side and we took the other. You had everything we needed, especially in the kitchen. We cooked almost every night and had s'mores by the fire. You are so close to everything like Telluride and Ouray where we enjoyed shopping, dining and hiking to the waterfalls. We will definitely come back to the Taco Bell house. It will be a vacation that we will never forget. Thank you.

Beautiful private retreat! Views from all sides!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our experience--the home was lovely and the views all around the property were majestic. We had our meals and morning tea and evening wine on different patios throughout the day because we didn't want to miss anything, and because we could as there were several outdoor areas from which we could choose. The one off the master suite leading to the rooftop patio was my favorite. Everything we wanted was pretty close by; 15 minutes to Ridgway, 25 minutes to Ouray and around 45 minutes to Telluride. There were so many nearby hikes it was hard to choose where to spend our time, including a wildflower and stream walk out the back gate of the property. David Mullings was an incredible host and led us on a guided tour or two. He was available to answer any questions or just for a nice conversation about life or about the history of the area if we happened to run into him (like when one of our dogs went running into his area on the property and began barking loudly at him--before they became best buddies). All around, a wonderful, and much too short, experience. I hope to make our way back soon and often!

This house was awesome for our family! We had 7 people total, 4 adults, 2 teenagers and a 10 year old, 2 dogs, and 3 Jeeps! We stayed one week, loved the unique style of the house. The owner is so nice and helpful. I highly recommend this house and would stay there again when we go back up there.

Wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

This is an incredible house with unique characters located in a convenient location, we couldn't have asked for more. We had a long weekend getaway to Ridgway and Ouray with friends and found the house very comfortable and the views are fantastic. The drive through the aspen trees lined driveway was wonderful. The house feels secluded yet close to town and it was easy to get take out and groceries when needed after a long day of hiking. David is an amazing host and made sure all our needs were met as well. We would definitely stay here again in the future.

Great vacation spot and host!

  • 5 of 5

The house is a lovely, quiet retreat but still close to so many activities. The views are some of the best in Colorado, as is the hiking, scenic drives, rafting, stargazing, etc. David is an excellent host - friendly, funny and knows the area very, very well. The house is well-appointed, clean and has everything you need. We had a lovely sunset/cocktail hour each evening and saw tons of flowers and wildlife. Don't miss the hike up to the aspen grove on the ridge behind the house!

Awesome Week

  • 5 of 5

This house is incredible! Centrally located for access to mountain hiking trails, town of Ridgway, Ouray, Telluride, and Montrose. The view from various balconies and porches is spectacular and the house has everything needed except food. We even got to see a very good free concert in Ridgway's park on Thursday. David the owner was always helpful and gave good advice on hiking trails. He even let us stay an extra day for free. The house and owner are pet friendly. I will have to dispute the comments about the house being "rodent infested". There were some mice, but not many, and not a problem if you don't leave food out. It is out in the country, and David got the one issue we had taken care of immediately. Mice were caught and no more problems. To say the house is "rodent infested" is a very unfair exaggeration. I would recommend this house to anyone, and if I get the chance, I'll be back again!!

House and location are ideal starting or ending point for San Juan Hut excursions. Ridgway and Burn Huts are about 3 miles away. Concerning the Google map ... Mi casa is not directly on Aspen Drive, but a quarter of a steep mile off the main road of Elk Meadows and 150 vertical feet above the road.
