About Don Ptacnik

Don Ptacnik (say-Tack Nick) and Marline were married under the large White Paper Birch located in the yard between The Cottage and their home. Years later, one of our daughters was also married in the yard. That ceremony took place on the small terrace just outside The Cottage. We love our home and the large yard within which The Cottage is located. Between us, we have three adult children and eight grandchildren. Marline is a health care executive and Don, your primary host is Marline's Gardener and Painter. We both enjoy people and sharing our secluded space in Downtown Bend. Don has lived in central Oregon for over 40 years and has participated in a number of activities which has provided him with a broad base of knowledge in the available outdoor opportunities. You are welcome to ask for suggestions ranging from the best hikes, automobile tours, bicycle trails/routes to the hidden jewels of coffee shops, museums and other cultural offerings. We want our guests to be pleasantly surprised by the luxury and charm of The Cottage, the grounds and of course, the overall experience. We recognize guests have numerous choices competing for their entertainment dollars and want to provide excellent value and a memorable experience. When every guest departs our goal is to hear them say ...”We will return and will recommend The Cottage to all our friends”. So far, so good!

Why Don Ptacnik chose Bend

The proximity to the core of downtown Bend makes The Cottage an idea choice for those wanting to be able to walk to town yet enjoy peace and quite in a secluded setting. The Cottage is located in a very large backyard which features several macro garden environments ranging from formal to natural areas. The Cottage has dedicated on-site parking and a private entry.

Five star rental

  • 5 of 5

We've rented 13 different homes in bend over the last few years and we have never written a review for any of them. This one takes the cake. Other rentals promise amenities but what is delivered can be sketchy at best. Not so with the cottage! While it is cozy, everything is at your fingertips and the host hasn't forgotten anything from fresh coffee and tea, water, any dish or pot you would need, soap, shampoo and conditioner, yoga mats, a muscle roller and more. We were just tickled by how well stocked and managed this place was and the location was great! It was so quick to walk to restaurants and shops downtown. The host was very quick to respond to any questions we had. We really appreciated using the snow park pass as we hadn't bought one for the season yet. So thoughtful to provide this.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your glowing review. Your testimonial about having stayed in a dozen other vacation rental properties but never written a review until now is extraordinarily telling! Marline and I do try to anticipate and provide for traveler needs. We are always open to Cottager recommendations and try to employ them to enhance each new guest's experience. We even change out bedding and art work to coincide with the seasons. I hope you two will return again and again.

Home Sweet Home

  • 5 of 5

As part of an Oregon Tour de Force, my wife and I spent two memorable days/nights in Bend visiting long time friends, enjoying the town's vibe and environs and being nurtured mornings and evenings by this comforting, conveniently located and well-appointed hideaway. When we return we will seek it out again and allow ourselves to be spoiled by the owners' attentive hospitality.

Owner's Response: Thank you both for your heartfelt review. You mentioned that as frequent travelers, your focus is on outside activities; not necessarily on your accommodations. I was pleased to read that you found the Cottage to be more than just a place to sleep. Marline and I work hard to ensure that the Cottage meets and hopefully, exceeds every guests' expectations. It is a lofty goal and promise to our customers is that we will always try to meet it. Please do come back and enjoy more of the Cottage and grounds peace and quite..

Beautiful Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful cottage with all the amenities you could ever need on a vacation. The attention to detail is incredible. My husband and I enjoyed the time we spent there as it was quiet, very comfortable and homey, and just a lovely place to come home to after a day of activities. It is a very short walking distance to downtown making shopping and eating convenient. The park by Mirror Pond is very close by as well. We highly recommend staying here and we hope to come back again soon.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your Cottage experience. We do try hard to provide a comfortable and relaxing lodging experience. We truly strive to anticipate traveler needs. By generously stocking the Cottage with so many amenities, we hope to prevent our Cottagers' from ever saying....'Oh snap, I forgot to pick up (you fill in the blanks from past experience) while shopping for dinner'. Or...'oh darn, we need to drive back to town to get a Snow Park permit. By the time we get to town, buy a permit and head back up to the trails, our play time will be so reduced we might as well not even go snow shoeing'. Unless an item is perishable, one will probably find it in the cottage. There is even a snow brush/ice scrapper for those arriving in a rental car.

A Real Gem

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently spent a week at the Second Street Cottage. You need to look no further to find nicer accommodations in Bend. The cottage was pristine, lovingly cared for, well designed, nicely decorated and perfect in every way. The five minute walk to downtown was so convenient for dinners out, but if you want to eat in, you will everything you need for meal preparation (and more) in the kitchen.

Don and Marline are the consummate hosts-it's almost like having your own personal concierge on site. Don knows it all-and more!

This was our first trip to Bend, but thanks to our wonderful experience, it won't be our last. As they say in road cycling, this was "above category".

Owner's Response: WOW! Thank you Marty for such a detailed review. The Cottage is special and so close to downtown yet tucked away from the hustle and bustle. Marline and I truly work hard to provide immaculate lodging. On average we spend 4-5 hours cleaning, stocking and maintaining the Cottage for each new guest. In comparison, hotel and motel housekeepers are generally allowed 15-20 minutes per unit. The difference shows and our Cottagers know it. While Marty did not mention it in her review, she did comment to me that she recognized almost all of the furnishings are from Pottery Barn.. Unlike some vacation rentals which have been furnished with owner left overs, the Cottage furniture, art work and colors were selected by a well accomplished, professional Interior Designer. And maintenance is ongoing. We are blessed that our Cottagers recognize and respect the quality and attention to detail we have invested for their benefit. Please do come back again and enjoy the tranquility of the various seasons in Bend.

Detail oriented and exquisite

  • 5 of 5

Don and Marline were wonderful hosts and they took the time to leave no detail unattended. The cottage is very cute with many, many amenities. It is very convenient walking distance to downtown in a very quiet neighborhood. It was the perfect arrangement for my wife and I. I couldn't recommend it more highly.

Owner's Response: Thank you Brent for your 5 Star review. We strive to provide numerous amenities so our Cottagers can spend more time playing and exploring; not running to the store several times for incidental items. With a large selection of spices and condiments, one can simply pick up meal essentials and know they will not need to run back to the store for seasonings, or even dressings. And thank you for your follow up call when you got home. Yes, you left the Cottage is excellent condition. Please do come back soon. DonP

Perfect Bend vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

I stayed in this cottage for 3 nights during a work conference, and it was perfect. Don was super communicative in the time leading up to the stay, making sure I had all the necessary information, including specific directions to get to the cottage and how to operate the lock. The cottage is exactly as advertised, and there are very thoughtful touches like a Forest Pass for hiking and suggestions for things to do in Bend. The cottage is immaculate and in a great location. It is clear that the owners take a lot of pride in their cottage and making sure their visitors have a great stay. If you are a single person or a couple looking for a perfect spot to enjoy Bend, you will not find a better place. I'm already looking forward to coming back in the winter to ski.

Owner's Response: Thank you Jason for taking time to review your Cottage experience. Marline and I try to be ..."super communicative" beginning with the reservation process. We provide information on the numerous amenities provided so a traveler can pack more smartly. This is especially helpful for guests traveling by air. And we appreciate you mentioning that the Cottage was..." exactly as advertised". As frequent hosts, we hear some incredible stories of the disappointments travelers have experienced at some short term rentals. Our promise to our guests is that the Cottage will always be spotless and everything will be in working order; especially all fire and life safety features. Please do come see us again and enjoy the tranquility of the grounds in winter.

Here is VRBO / Homeaway's explaination of the service fee...

The service fee is paid by the traveler when booking through the HomeAway websites. This fee covers the cost of providing 24/7 customer support, enhanced site and mobile features for both owner and travelers, plus expanded marketing efforts to generate more exposure to global audiences. Additionally, when a traveler books and pays through HomeAway, they are eligible for the Book with Confidence Guarantee.

Paying the fee

Travelers pay the service fee by credit card when paying through the secure HomeAway checkout process. The service fee is only charged to the card once the booking has been accepted by the property owner or manager. The service fee is, on average, approximately 6% of the rental amount, excluding refundable deposit or taxes. This fee is lower than other travel websites that charge a similar fee.

Refunding the fee

The owner does not have the ability to discount or waive the service fee amount. The only time the service fee can be refunded is when an owner uses the Cancellation Refund feature from their dashboard and the cancellation is requested within the terms of the owner/manager's cancellation policy. However, if the reservation is not canceled and all payments fully refunded to the traveler, the service fee will not be refunded.

Owner's Cancellation Policy

100% refund if canceled at least 30 days before arrival date.
