About Don Ptacnik

Don Ptacnik (say-Tack Nick) and Marline were married under the large White Paper Birch located in the yard between The Cottage and their home. Years later, one of our daughters was also married in the yard. That ceremony took place on the small terrace just outside The Cottage. We love our home and the large yard within which The Cottage is located. Between us, we have three adult children and eight grandchildren. Marline is a retired health care executive and Don, your primary host is Marline's Gardener and Painter. We both enjoy people and sharing our secluded space in Downtown Bend. Don has lived in central Oregon for over 45 years and has participated in a number of activities which has provided him with a broad base of knowledge in the available outdoor opportunities. You are welcome to ask for suggestions ranging from the best hikes, automobile tours, bicycle trails/routes to the hidden jewels of coffee shops, museums and other cultural offerings. We want our guests to be pleasantly surprised by the luxury and charm of The Cottage, the grounds and of course, the overall experience. We recognize guests have numerous choices competing for their entertainment dollars and want to provide excellent value and a memorable experience. The Absolute Best Place to Stay in Bend, Oregon!

My wife and I just returned from a 2 week long Oregon vacation. We spent the first week at the Second Street Cottage in Bend and we loved it! The Cottage is immaculately clean, perfectly located, and incredibly well-stocked with everything you could possibly need to have an amazing, entertaining, and relaxing stay in Bend. Within walking distance there is a great grocery store (Newport Avenue Market), a great place to rent bicycles (Sunnyside Sports),. and oodles of places to eat. The grounds are stunningly landscaped - we enjoyed relaxing on the awesome patio behind the Cottage each evening. Each day we made sure we returned from our adventures in time to enjoy the sunset. Don and Marline are the perfect hosts - they are there if you need them but they respect your privacy as well. Don knows everything Bend has to offer and he suggested two great adventures that we would not have discovered without his guidance. This is easily the best vacation rental property that we have ever experienced. Thanks Don and Marline!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the glowing review and mentioning how we respect our guests' privacy. The Cottage is situated at the rear of our .25+ downtown acre property. It has its own dedicated off street parking and private entry. The ground were on the 2012 Central Oregon Master Gardeners' tour which attests to the landscaping being a "cut above". And there is great separation between the Cottage and our home, affording privacy for our guests with each of us enjoying our own patios. Most importantly, each time we walk toward the Cottage patio, we (the hosts) ask permission to approach. Our Cottagers' comfort and privacy are paramount. Please do come back.

Best Place to Stay in Bend

This cottage is very well appointed and did not disappoint. It is close to downtown and within walking distance to many good restaurants. The host is very attentive and works hard to make sure everything is in order.

Outstanding Stay

We have stayed at vrbo’s throughout the U.S. and Europe and Don’s rental is by far the nicest and best equipped accommodation we’ve ever stayed at - from shampoo to salad dressings to beach towels to champagne. The location is excellent for exploring Bend on foot and central Oregon by car. We would highly recommend this rental to anyone.

One of the best kept secrets in Central Oregon

We travel all over the country and enjoy the peace of a beautiful cottage. Don has provided a spectacular cottage with EVERY possible amenity you can imagine. They even change the art and the bedspread to fit the season. The cottage is immaculate and provides amazing views of eagles, deer, Ice Man and you are only one quarter mile from the downtown and Drake park. The yard is parklike and provides you with a very nice place to enjoy a glass of wine while enjoying the scenery. This is a 5 Star Plus destination. In a class by itself!

It is centered between to major East/West roads yet is far enough away from each so little road noise is heard. And and you mentioned, close to downtown Bend. Very Comfortable and Enjoyable Stay

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at the Second Street Cottage during our week trip to Bend. The cottage was very comfortable and very clean. The beautiful garden was the perfect place to sit and have our morning coffee or enjoy the sunset while we recapped our day. We also really enjoyed seeing the deer who would visit the garden area. Don had thought of everything to make our stay comfortable.

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking the time to write your review. Our property (upon which the Cottage is situated) was one of 6 on the 2012 Central Oregon Master Gardeners annual tour. Subsequently, we have added and refined the landscaping and seating areas on our .25 acre lot for even more opportunity/diversity of sun spots and shade. While we cannot guarantee guests will see deer roaming the grounds, sightings are highly likely (Gladys had another fawn about a month ago). She and her band of urban deer are docile and voracious eaters of our landscaping efforts---but they were here first so we peaceful co exist. For many of our guests, the Cottage and ground feel like an oasis. Being situated between but away from two major east/west surface streets and within earshot of the Mirror Pond dam spillway, one hardly hears traffic noise experienced on busy streets, Yet downtown Bend is just a 4-5 minute WALK from the Cottage. Marline hope you will be able to return and enjoy the changing seasons of central Oregon. DonP

The service fee is paid by the traveler when booking through the HomeAway websites. This fee covers the cost of providing 24/7 customer support, enhanced site and mobile features for both owner and travelers, plus expanded marketing efforts to generate more exposure to global audiences. Additionally, when a traveler books and pays through HomeAway, they are eligible for the Book with Confidence Guarantee.

Paying the fee

Travelers pay the service fee by credit card when paying through the secure HomeAway checkout process. The service fee is only charged to the card once the booking has been accepted by the property owner or manager. The service fee is, on average, approximately 6% of the rental amount, excluding refundable deposit or taxes. This fee is lower than other travel websites that charge a similar fee.

Refunding the fee

The owner does not have the ability to discount or waive the service fee amount. The only time the service fee can be refunded is when an owner uses the Cancellation Refund feature from their dashboard and the cancellation is requested within the terms of the owner/manager's cancellation policy. However, if the reservation is not canceled and all payments fully refunded to the traveler, the service fee will not be refunded.
