What an amazing cottage!

I stayed in Don's cottage for a month and loved it! I drove up from San Diego and Don had an electric car charger put in right before I arrived so it was nice to be able to charge my car at the cottage!

About the cottage: It was EXTREMELY clean and looked as if the cottage had just been redone. They take great pride in their cottage and it shows. All of the amenities are there as I cooked most nights. I really cannot think of anything I would change. The deer hang out in the backyard so that was nice as well.

About the area: It is short walk to downtown and Drake Park. I walked most everywhere and enjoyed the proximity to downtown, the park and the river. So much to do in the downtown area to include restaurants, bars, coffee shops, etc. I love the Bend area and will definitely come back soon!

Overall, I recommend this for anyone traveling to Bend. Perfect for one person and if couple, great for both of you. It isn't large but very quaint.

Marline and I had been considering adding a Level 2 Electric Vehicle charger to the Cottage for some time and your visit made it happen. Thanks for educating us on the selection and use of the EV charger. The secure installation immediately adjacent to the Cottage parking pad is both convenient and discrete for guests. Installation of the Charger also clearly signals our commitment to protecting the environment while enhancing the guest experience. We do strive to provide an immaculate environment and quality furnishing. Since we perform most of the cleaning and maintenance of the Cottage, we can easily identify anything which might need extra attention. It is common for us to touch up paint or clean any stains as soon as they are noticed, thus the almost “never lived in” appearance. And with Marline and I both having healthcare backgrounds, we know to pay extra attention to cleaning; a task which routinely take 4-5 manhours, regardless of the prior guest’s length of stay. The Cottage is licensed for up to four guests and especially in warmer weather, lives larger than its size. The only access to the bathroom is through the bedroom so we try to communicate that to any party with 3 or more travelers. As you mentioned, from the Cottage one can walk nearly anywhere is Bend, especially downtown. What is unique about the Cottage is that it is situated on over .25 acres and secluded. The retreat like setting is home to numerous deer and it is common to see them sleeping right outside the Cottage windows. Please do tell your Electric Vehicle owning friends about the Cottage. We believe we are the only short term vacation home in Bend to offer the Charging amenity.

The Cottage is so much more than just a place to sleep and maybe make a meal. The seclusion on our .25+ acre grounds is unmatched for being just a 4 minute walk to downtown. The cobblestone off street parking pad and private entrance are just the beginning of the surprises. When a guest opens the front door they immediately notice the abundant natural light, high end finishes and quality furnishing. Looking out the French doors at the private patio, BBQ, and well-manicured grounds gives an immediate feeling of comfort and peacefulness. Beautiful Cottage in Bend

This cottage has everything you need for a relaxing stay in Bend. It's very close to downtown and local breweries and coffee houses. Also, an easy walk to the Old Mill District. The cottage is exceptionally clean and very organized. There isn't really anything you need to bring with you except your suitcase. Don is so easy to work with and very helpful and communication with him was exceptional. The cottage has a beautiful private patio to sit and enjoy the scenery, it is also very quiet. I would definitely stay here again, and would highly recommend this cottage as a place to enjoy a fabulous vacation in Bend.

Affirmations that we are still on track are helpful. When we started offering the Cottage 6 summers ago, it quickly became clear that travelers appreciate an immaculate property. Providing such an environment became our passion. One cannot promise good weather or that the deer will visit the gardens, but we can promise a clean Cottage. Another promise is that we will try to anticipate our guests needs and more importantly, actually provide for them. Perfect location - clean and updated features

My husband and I stayed in Bend after I ran the half marathon in McMinnville. This cottage is perfectly located a short walking distance to town. Don was very responsive and was the perfect host. When I asked on our first morning there where the closest place was for me to buy milk for coffee he texted back to say look out your back door. The cottage was immaculate and clean, has very nice updated features and has a cozy back patio with views of deer time to time. I would highly recommend you stay at this spot. Don would check In with us on a regular basis via text to ensure we had all we needed. We for sure will be back. My husband and I had a perfect time. Try out Wild Rose for awesome AWESOME thai food.

Couldn't be better in Bend.

This Cottage stay was simply amazing. Don was an incredible host and takes pride in providing a 5 star experience... I would give it 6/5. He's thought of every way to be hospitable and make your stay as good as can be. The cottage was quaint, private, remodeled, clean and comfortable. It felt like we were the first people to ever stay there... meticulously maintained! It felt like we were living in a Pottery Barn magazine. The location was perfect. We walked downtown every night and easily found lots to do in Bend. It was sad to leave The Cottage, but we'll be back :)

Marline and I recognize that lodging can be simply a place to slept but that is not what the Second Street Cottage is about. As you noted in your review, it is so much more. Typically, we spend over 4 hours cleaning, prepping and maintaining the Cottage between each new arrival. We want each Cottager (what we call our guests) to feel like they are the first to have ever stayed in it. As a comparison, hotel housekeeping staff are allocated 15-20 minutes to prepare a room. The difference is discernible."

As usual, the Second Street Cottage is the gold standard by which all other places we rent are judged. We travel quite a bit and it's the little details (like sharp knives!) that make all the difference.

About Don Ptacnik

Don Ptacnik (say-Tack Nick) and Marline were married under the large White Paper Birch located in the yard between The Cottage and their home. Years later, one of our daughters was also married in the yard. That ceremony took place on the small terrace just outside The Cottage. We love our home and the large yard within which The Cottage is located. Between us, we have three adult children and eight grandchildren. Marline is a retired health care executive and Don, your primary host is Marline's Gardener and Painter. We both enjoy people and sharing our secluded space in Downtown Bend. Don has lived in central Oregon for over 45 years and has participated in a number of activities which has provided him with a broad base of knowledge in the available outdoor opportunities. You are welcome to ask for suggestions ranging from the best hikes, automobile tours, bicycle trails/routes to the hidden jewels of coffee shops, museums and other cultural offerings. We want our guests to be pleasantly surprised by the luxury and charm of The Cottage, the grounds and of course, the overall experience. We recognize guests have numerous choices competing for their entertainment dollars and want to provide excellent value and a memorable experience. When every guest departs our goal is to hear them say ...”We will return and will recommend The Second Street Cottage to all our friends”. So far, so good!

The service fee is paid by the traveler when booking through the HomeAway websites. This fee covers the cost of providing 24/7 customer support, enhanced site and mobile features for both owner and travelers, plus expanded marketing efforts to generate more exposure to global audiences. Additionally, when a traveler books and pays through HomeAway, they are eligible for the Book with Confidence Guarantee.

Paying the fee

Travelers pay the service fee by credit card when paying through the secure HomeAway checkout process. The service fee is only charged to the card once the booking has been accepted by the property owner or manager. The service fee is, on average, approximately 6% of the rental amount, excluding refundable deposit or taxes. This fee is lower than other travel websites that charge a similar fee.

Refunding the fee

The owner does not have the ability to discount or waive the service fee amount. The only time the service fee can be refunded is when an owner uses the Cancellation Refund feature from their dashboard and the cancellation is requested within the terms of the owner/manager's cancellation policy. However, if the reservation is not canceled and all payments fully refunded to the traveler, the service fee will not be refunded.
