Quaint 1880 shingle-style cottage located on the western side of Cushing's Island, in Casco Bay. The house is just steps away from Little Beach, with sweeping views of the cove and Casco Bay. Listen to the waves lapping on the beach from the front porch. There are 6 bedrooms, 3 full baths, LR, DR, kitchen, and a screened-in porch. The house rental rate allows up to 8 guests. Check-in time is 5pm on a Saturday and check-out time is 10am on a Saturday.
Cushing's Island is a small privately-owned island in Casco Bay with extensive carriage roads and walking paths through the picturesque landscape. Islanders enjoy walking, birding, swimming, sunbathing, tennis, fishing, kayaking, sailing, and or you can just relax on the porch and watch the ever-changing parade of water craft, clouds, and sunsets. There are no cars, stores, or restaurants on the island. The caretaker drives the only vehicle. Regular (private) ferry service leaves from the Portland waterfront from Memorial Day to Labor Day, so if desired, you can go off-island for a day of shopping and sight-seeing. Cushing's Island is a great setting for quiet family vacation - removed from the hustle and bustle and yet just minutes from Portland.
I live in the Boston-area but have summered here for the past 50 years. It's truly a special place.
Phil Thayer purchased this cottage in 1963
My parents bought this property because they loved the community and it is near my mother's parents
The house is just a steps away from Little Beach, one of four island community beaches. The house has a lovely view of water from the front porch,.
We have been coming to Cushings Island since 1986. We have family on the Island, but with our expanding brood we needed more beds and a little privacy during our visit. We booked this last minute (not preferred), and found the owners and the home to be very accommodating. The house, build in the late 1890's is in excellent condition, and the amenities are suited perfectly for a Maine Island experience. The screened in porch was enchanting in the morning, a light breeze with the view of Portland perfect to sip coffee and wait for the brood to wake up.
We have rented 5 homes, and this rates in the top tier of the homes we have rented over the past decade, and we will certainly rent it again. I would change nothing.
This is such a cute house, imaginatively decorated, comfortable, with stunning surroundings. Something about being on an island, so close to Portland, but yet so far away from it all, is unlike any other vacation. A great place to explore or just relax on the porch and watch the sun go down while your kids play on the beach. Cushings Island is a special place... you will fall in love!!
I would highly recommend this charming cottage to family and friends. The decor is fun, the view is spectacular and the screened in porch is delightful! The kitchen is very well stocked and the house is beautifully kept. We would stay there again in a minute!
We had a great stay at this home. Before even arriving, we felt taken care of by the owners. There are some logistics involved (ferry schedules, mainland shopping, what to bring) given the island location and the fact that there are no stores on island. The owners were helpful and gracious in answering our questions around all of this. We got to meet them in passing as the ferry shuttled us on and them off the island and it was clear that they enjoy their gem of a home on the island as much as we did and are happy to share the wonderful experience of Cushing Island living with others. This island is a special place. No cars, beautiful beaches, friendly people, most of whom have vacationed there for generations. The house itself was perfectly situated, with a view of "children's beach" from the most comfortable porch. We spent many hours relaxing on this beautiful porch. We ate most of our meals out there. My husband and I could watch the kids (old enough to be down on beach alone) from the porch, a real perk! The house is rustic vintage but oh so charming. There are a few quirks and some peeling paint here and there but this only adds to the charm. The pictures accurately represent. Clean, well stocked kitchen. Plenty of towels, comfy sheets and quilts and even shampoo in all the bathrooms. There are fans in all the bedroom and no need for AC so very comfortable sleeping every night. We are sad that we cannot get back there this summer but hope to next summer.
One of 45 summer homes on this 1 sq mile private island. Spectacular views of Portland lighthouse and surrounding islands. Explore WWI and WWII forts on the ocean-side. Follow the foot paths through nature conservancy land. 1/2 hour ferry ride or 15 minute water taxi ride to downtown Portland

I prefer rentals to run from a check-in time of 5pm on a Saturday and check-out time of 10am on a Saturday. However, I'm open to negotiation.
