I, Tom (Dr Cheese), am a retired, third-generation cheesemaker from central Wisconsin, earning my PhD from the Department of Food Science at UW-Madison. My career was devoted in it's entirety to the art of cheesemaking, specifically research and quality control for local Wisconsin companies. Hence the photo of the wood burning oven which is a feature in our cabin where my wife, Karen, and I pursue our hobby of pizza making and wood-oven delicacies when our friends and family gather - the cabin then is humorously referred to as 'PIZZA AND PAD' ! Karen and I have been bringing our family up to the northwoods area to vacation for years and years so it was without hesitation that we chose this area to retire. Now we are blessed to spend all of our time in the splendor of the four seasons here northern Wisconsin. We feel especially blessed to be able to share Birchwood with guests.

Why thomas chose Manitowish Waters
Relaxing and enjoying the serenity of the north after a long day of fishing and swimming is what you will experience here at the Everson's cabin. However, you do not have to be a fisherman to enjoy our area. The Manitowish Waters (MW) community flourishes with activities all year around. The community park offers seasonal 'Music in the Park' on Sundays; and many guests take in the local water skiers shows on nearby Rest Lake (accessible by auto or boat). Multiple wonderful restaurants are available closeby - also by auto or boat. The MW Discovery Center offers opportunities for informative and educational sessions on subjects of nature. Available on the grounds of the Center are walking and hiking, kayaking and canoeing, etc. There are miles of beautifully paved and safe navigating bike trails very near our cabin that traverse users into beautiful northwoods scenery and along picturesque roadways. For flea market enthusiasts, seasonal Thursday mornings the MW Lions/Lioness offer a 'shopping experience' of multiple crafts and great vegetables and produce from all over Central Wisconsin. The flea market is located less than three miles from Birchwood. Also available is nearby grocery stores that can supply your every vacation need. We have fine shopping in gift/home decorating boutiques right in the community. For reading enthusiast, our community library is closeby and offers a full library selection of reading materials. Two airports are available - MW airport is three miles away and we offer transportation to and from; the Rhinelander airport is an hour away and a shuttle service is available to and from there.
What makes this Cabin unique
Uniqueness of our vacation spot provides our guests with a quiet and serene getaway, campfire chats, constellation views from the pier, sunrises and sunsets, a good book or a long nap on the shaded hammock. Come and enjoy!
Great accommodations and owner.
Great to host guests using our Cabin to participate in the Musky Classic in Manitowish Waters, Wi. Welcome fishermen and women for 2018 Muskey Classic!
Beautiful property as well as fabulous hosts
From the minute we arrived until the sad leaving we had a wonderful time. Karen and Tom were both very conscientious about making our stay comfortable.
The property was impeccably clean and very nicely decorated and the grounds were beautiful. There was a plethora of information about the lake and surrounding area in the cabin and they were always ready to answer any questions we had.
We hope it will be possible to return sometime.
Nice and well kept up
We had everything we wanted except fish. Thomas was very helpful and a sweet and nice man he made sure everything was okay. A lot of privacy. Thank you hope to go back.
Thank you Ilagene and Ken for respecting our Ranch
Cabin and leaving premises in 'cared for' condition. We enjoyed having you as our guests and look forward to your return in the future. Dr Tom and Karen Everson
If you want to get away "to the cabin" but still want the conveniences of home, this is the place for you! This beautiful studio cabin was just what we needed to relax with our family in comfort. Thomas and Karen are exceptional hosts and we left feeling we had made friends for life! They provided all the things we needed to make our stay very comfortable! The fishing was good also (we chose this cabin specifically because it came with a fishing boat)! We enjoyed at least three meals of fried fish after going out in the little boat and finding a "honey hole" to fish in each time. The cabin was beautiful, the scenery was beautiful, the area around is beautiful, and these hosts have a beautiful way of making a getaway special! Not only can you utilize the fishing boat but also the fire pit, the lake for swimming, AND the dock for reading with your feet dangling in the water, (where you might just have a couple of ducklings swim under, like I did. :-) I hope YOU get to enjoy it as much as we did!
We thoroughly enjoyed having the Fowlers as guests in our remodeled Studio Cabin for the first week in July, 2018. We enjoyed their company all week and also the fireworks from our pier on the 4th of July! We certainly agree with their comments about their stay at Birchwood and hope they consider us for future vacations in the North! Dr. Tom and Karen Everson
Out of this world!
This property is amazing; I can't say enough about the hospitality of our hosts, Thom & Karen. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome; the cabin is beautifully appointed with all the little details; you have to see it in person to really appreciate it. The pics are an understatement. There's so much to say so I'll just cover it in categories:
The place was spotless when we arrived, kept at a cool temp by the oscillating fan; cozy lighting; soft music playing from the corner HDTV.
Everything you could possibly need, and more, is included in this cabin. Kitchen fully stocked with dishes, utensils, wine opener, scissors, lighter, etc. Bathroom stocked w/little odds & ends. Fishing boat with 15hp motor. For such a small "studio" cabin there's plenty of space to rig the rods, relax, sprawl out. We never felt cramped. There is no A/C (to my knowledge) but we didn't need it. The trees provide lots of shade so there isn't much "greenhouse effect," and the oscillating fan kept the air circulating & comfortable.
If I could give it more stars, I would. Our gracious hosts stay in the house nextdoor; not only did they give us a warm welcome, but they were available for assistance during our stay. When we arrived they looked over our map of the lakes and suggested some fishing spots. Thom also took us out in the Ranger for a ~30 min. tour. At one point my husband couldn't keep the boat motor running, and Thom came out back and helped him get the hang of the throttle. It was smooth sailing from there. At another point we ran low on gas in the middle of a neighboring lake, and Thom came out in the Ranger and refueled it. The best part was that he didn't seem to mind and never made us feel like we were imposing. One night they invited us to sit around the campfire, but we had dinner reservations. When we got back from dinner, they'd left a low fire burning, and 2 chairs. On our back patio was a small table with marshmallows graham crackers, and chocolate for making S'mores!
We didn't catch a single fish during our entire stay, and still had one of the best vacations of our lives. Our only regret was that we spent so much time out on the lakes that we barely had time to enjoy the dreamy cabin.
I definitely recommend this place. If you stay here, please be kind and courteous to your hosts bc they are wonderful people who deserve nothing less! Also, take good care of the cabin bc we will be back! ;) Lol.
The Humme's were the quintessential couple as our guests! They were kind, considerate, and respectiful of every amenity we offered for their stay. We thoroughly enjoyed their company due to their friendly, personalities and respect they showed for our property. And, they left the Studio Cabin clean, and organized just like we prepared it for all of our guests. We hope they include us on their next trip to the North!!!!
